I keep thinking about the concept of Yao and Ilyukhnia live AUs and the idea of them all waking up from their comas, but Grace doesn't remember who he is and they don't know why, so they assume it's some sort of coma related brain damage or other complication
In the book, when Stratt first tries to convince Grace to go on the mission, Yao and Ilyukhnia assure Grace that they'll take care of all the astronaut stuff, he only has to focus on the science, they'll be there for him, they won't make him go, they won't let him be forced if he doesn't want to be
He didn't even want to go (but eventually agreed, because all of Earth was on the line, they think), and now (by what appears to them to be a cruel twist of fate) he's the one who didn't make it all in one piece, and he's scared and confused on top of not having the correct training, and they care about him, he's their friend and they're worried for him, but they have to save Earth and there's only so much they can do anymore. The lives of all of Earth are on the line, there's only so much energy that can be put into messy feelings right now
Imagine after the mission is done, suddenly learning that it wasn't an accident, that he was forced against his will to come, and drugged with amnesia so that none of you would even know, because he was forced to come against your wills too. Would he even tell them?
