Oh, that's a good question!! I love writing dialogue far more than descriptive prose because I feel like English is such a uniquely great language for it. Everything flows so well, and dialogue feels sooo snappy in English (in my humble opinion).

My biggest technical piece of advice would be this: contrary to popular opinion, dialogue is just as susceptible to good and bad pacing as any other part of your story.

If a conversation is flowing quickly and your characters are bantering or flirting, I think you should cut everything around it down to a minimum. Not so much that it becomes difficult to tell who's speaking - although, if you're really, really skilled at character voice, your readers should be able to tell even without dialogue tags - but don't overcomplicate it.

I use he says a lot, which is often considered bad style, but I actually think it's one of the most invisible dialogue tags you can use. If every line comes with a highly descriptive, specific dialogue tag, your brain automatically latches onto it, and you get pulled out of the conversation much more quickly. For dialogue to flow well, everything surrounding it has to fade into the background.

I studied a lot of drama at university, and I also love reading screenplays because they put dialogue front and centre. If you struggle with writing dialogue, I'd really recommend looking up the screenplays of your favourite films and simply reading them like you would a novel. In my opinion, it's one of the best ways to strip dialogue down to its essentials.

Content-wise, every conversation your characters have should lead somewhere.

Banter often feels like it's just pointless waffling, but I actually think the mark of a great writer is making it feel as though the characters are simply talking without any particular purpose, while you're steering the conversation the entire time.

Every single sentence should either reveal something about a character or deepen the dynamic between the people involved. You should never give your reader the feeling that you're wasting their time. They should never finish a scene thinking, "Well... that was pointless. What did that actually reveal?"

I hope this helped! Of course, this is only what works for me and what I personally enjoy in dialogue, but maybe you can take something from it for your own writing. <3

My biggest tips are:

Outline and plot before you write: With fanfic especially, many writers - particularly when they're just starting out - make the mistake of letting themselves be guided entirely by inspiration. Unfortunately, if you want to write something even a little longer, that's probably the worst thing you can do. Inspiration will leave you about 20% of the way in, and then you're left with an unplanned fic and no idea how to salvage it. That's why I love outlining before I start writing. Not only does it help me find my way once I'm actually writing it, but it also lets me know, before I've even written a single word, whether this fic has any real longevity or whether it's just something I'm momentarily obsessed with.

Write every day: You don't have to write much, but I do think it's crucial - especially when you're just starting out - to build a routine. If you only ever sit down to write when inspiration strikes, or after you've done absolutely everything else and writing has fallen to the bottom of your priority list, you risk never getting to it at all. Writing needs attention, and it thrives on good habits. It is a very, very jealous profession.

Read a lot: Whether it's fanfic or books, there is no writing without reading. Whenever I feel burnt out or like I've run out of words, I sit down with a book and make myself read. You'll notice that other people's words have a way of jumpstarting your own mind. They get the words flowing again and help you find your way back into your groove.
