reblog and make a wish! this was removed from tumbrl due to “violating one or more of Tumblr’s Community Guidelines”, but since my wish came true the first time, I’m putting it back. :)
“Most hospitals in America are non-profits, which means they must have financial assistance or Charity Care policies. This is gonna sound weird, but what that means is that if you make under a certain amount of money, the hospital legally has to forgive your hospital bills. Let me show you how this works. Type in the hospital name with ‘financial assistance’ after. Should be the top link. Let’s check. What you wanna do is look for financial assistance applications and policies. Let’s check the policy. From here, what you’re looking for is a sliding scale of benefits. 0-300% of the poverty guidelines, they will forgive 100% of your medical bills. So you can see here that 300% is $37,470, so if you make under that amount, the hospital will legally forgive your medical bills. If you’re a larger household, you can check it out from here. If you wanna test it out, I run a non-profit that does this so DM me, and I will actually do it for you, and see if we can crush those medical bills.” The guy’s Tiktok handle is @dollarfor.
The majority of my immediate fam works for hospitals and had no idea this was a thing. I find that insane but not at all surprising. Of course, there are probably all sorts of loopholes or requirements depending on the hospital or what sorta medical insurance you have. This might be helpful to check out.

Couple things with this because it’s important!
1. This generally doesn’t cover ANY preventative care, only sick visits and specialty visits.
2. Gynecological care is usually not covered.
3. Pay attention to which doctor you’re seeing! Even if you are approved by the hospital, the doctor/nurse you’re seeing may be a private practitioner within the hospital, therefore THEIR bills wouldn’t be waived.
4. Lab work, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests are generally not covered which means you’ll still have to pay for those.
5. Prescriptions are never covered. Use GoodRX.com to compare prescription prices and find the lowest provider. Additionally, tell your doctor you don’t have insurance. They’ll usually find the cheapest prescription, change the number of pills prescribed (fun fact, more pills can mean lower prices than less pills!), or even give you free samples!!
6. If you qualify for the charity program, chances are you’ll also qualify for the charity program for long-term prescription medications. Look up your medications manufacturer to see what assistance is offered. In some cases you can even get your medication for free!
7. Stay on top of your paperwork. It’s a pain but it’s worth it
PLEASE KEEP REBLOGGING THIS. You never know which of your mutuals and followers might need it.

I loved this
Link to entire thread which is filled with sources and text resources:
Black Is King/Black Is Q(ueer)ing A Thread on queerness in the African tradition. https://t.co/kRAqBHX3S5
Many Africans have been told that Queerness isn’t indigenous to African. This rhetoric has led to several homophobic and transphobic laws an
I want to be clear that these posts are not perpetuating the false idea that precolonial Africa was a Utopian paradise without issues of class or hierarchy. Precolonial African traditions of gender & sexual variance still had its issues. I also want to be clear that certain African peoples, both pre and post colonialism, do not have the same language for gender as Western or other societies do-for ex: the Yoruba people.
Here is a wonderful thread addressing these topics in addition to confirming the presence of people in precolonial Africa who were not what we consider cisheterosexual-filled with book recommendations, full PDFs and various text resources
We have asserted that precolonial African traditions of gender/sexual variance are not ideal/utopic—that they still involve labor divisions,
The European gender binary reinforces sexual dualism based on genitals. In Ifi Amadiume’s seminal work, we get a glimpse into how a society
Enough of us do not even realize how much of a post-colonial white-supremic world we still live in. Things like racism, the gender binary, homophobia are all concepts and inventions of the european influence on us globally.
Too many times I have read about a pre-colonial culture (the fact that I even have to say pre colonial 🙄) where I read that certain things were or were not common practice until Europeans arrived and forced their culture on everybody and then used Christianity to justify it while they were enslaving, raping, kidnapping, and committing genocide. And there are actual poc who can’t see pass the eurocentricity of literaly EVERYTHING because it’s what we were raised to think and believe and were never exposed to anything that would suggest otherwise.
I think this and some of the notes are referring to the Buck Breaking documentary by Tariq Nasheed
I was forced to watch it with family and let me tell yall, that was.....an experience (not a pleasant one in any way)
And it's so bizarre because they would occassionly bring up good points and historical facts supported by written and visual accounts regarding buck breaking. Because that is a thing(at least from understanding of the film's context, I believe it has other meanings but I'm just talking about this for now)slave masters did and something that is still carried out against Black people
But then when it came to topics about homosexuality and how that came from the Europeans, they just stopped using logical evidence and just spewed whatever was convenient for their agenda
The documentary could have been an opportunity to open discussions of how things like buck breaking allowed White people to control perceptions of gender expressions of Black people to this day
But instead, I would say 75-80% of it was just "Black people aren't meant to be homosexual"
