I always find it so funny how Peter Jackson turned the Cirith Ungol (-esque, includining moments prior) scenes into a dramatic separation arc for Sam in Frodo because in the original this same time frame is one of the most personal, emotional and quiet (and gay) period in the whole book.
The movies have them argue about lembas and cry and shout. In the books they walk through Shelob's lair holding hands and Sam makes Frodo laugh and this the first time the laugh was ever heard in Cirith Ungol and Sam convices Frodo to sleep on his lap because for no apparent reason and then Sam places one hand on Frodo's forhead and the other on his chest and then dozes off. This vision touches Gollum so much he almost turns good again.
Peter Jackson looked at the book, looked at the sequence of scenes and went "nope, this is too gay. We have to separate them so they are not gay"
