hi!!! first time posting so idk if anyone is going to be actually interested in this, but
some time ago i created this playlist that i'm quite proud of and that basically follows the story of the four hobbits (and then mainly sam and frodo's) in LOTR. it's meant to be listened to in order since every song, or couple of songs, are tied to specific chapters of the books.
so yeah, here's the playlist and below im gonna list the chapters and explain which songs are tied to which chapter, in case anyone's curious :) (sorry if it's incredibly long, i just got too excited about it heh)
(i also have a samfro playlist, maybe i'll share that one too in the future)
The Fellowship Of The Ring
"Concerning Hobbits" (this is meant to be an introduction to the shire, hobbits and shire life and, of course, bilbo <3)
Prelude
The clouded annals Of History
Pazu's fanfare
The Shire
Bag End
The ballad Of Bilbo Baggins
Trois pommes
"A Long Expected Party" (soundtrack to bilbo's 111th birthday party!! also yes i know "the green dragon" is sung in rotk, but we're mainly following book canon here so it doesn't matter)
Hobbit festival
Party in the Shire
Hobbit tunes
Bilbo Baggins' birthday background
Flaming red hair
The Green Dragon
Hobbit's dance
"Three Is Company / A Short Cut To Mushrooms" (frodo, sam & pippin leave hobbiton)
The journey begins
The greatest adventure
Like a hobbit in a mushroom field
"A Conspiracy Unmasked" (stopping at crickhollow + dinner with fatty bolger)
We must away!
"The Old Forest / In The House Of Tom Bombadil" (i know some of these songs don't quite follow book canon, but i wanted something that sounded like it could be sung by all four hobbits together, (also the songs are too good to leave out))
Hobbit walking song
The road goes on
Patient is the night
Adelaide's trap
Tom Bombadil's song (I)
Old Tom Bombadil
(i left out "fog on the barrow downs" (as well as a few other chapters, you'll see) because as much as i love the wight's chant, especially the tolkien ensemble's version with christopher lee, i wanted this playlist to be something that could be listened to in the background while reading or drawing or even driving and i felt that it didn't quite fit the vibe i was going for)
"At The Sign Of The Prancing Pony"
The cat and the moon
"A Knife In The Dark"
Weathertop
"Flight To The Ford" (i'll never leave out sam's singing in this chapter, it's one of my favorite scenes ever <3)
Sam's rhyme of the troll
"Many Meetings" ("come back to the valley" is actually from the hobbit, but i think it fits here too, maybe bilbo forced the elves to sing his praises to the four hobbits? i feel it's something he would do)
Rivendell
Come back to the valley
"The Ring Goes South" (listen, it's a lotr playlist, "soldier poet king" had to be there)
I sit beside the fire and think
Soldier, poet, king
"The Mirror Of Galadriel"
Lament for Gandalf
"The Breaking Of The Fellowship"
May it be
The Two Towers
(there's not much here except for some samfro stuff, since i absolutely love book IV and, again, i wanted to put something entish here, but everything i found didn't quite fit the vibe. all the same, i couldn't leave the rohirrim out)
"The King Of The Golden Hall / Helm's Deep"
The riders of Rohan
"Journey To The Cross-Roads" (also called "sam and frodo flirting")
Samwise the Brave
Now and for always
"Shelob's Lair / The Choices Of Master Samwise"
Come wayward souls
The Return Of The King
(here i mainly followed the timeline of the movies i guess)
"The Tower Of Cirith Ungol" (i cant even begin to explain how much this chapter and this song specifically have affected my life, but they're so so so so special to me)
In Western Lands
"The Siege Of Gondor / The Battle Of The Pelennor Fields" (i had to put in something for faramir and eowyn, i couldn't leave them out of the playlist <3)
The sacrifice of Faramir
Merry's simple courage
The battle of Evermore
The Rider
"The Black Gate Opens / Mount Doom"
For Frodo
Mount Doom
The Sun yet shines
"The Field Of Cormallen" ("there beneath" sounds how ithilien looks to me)
The Sun also rises
There beneath
"The Steward And The King" (the farawyn song!! i couldn't resist, i love them your honor)
Would that I
"Homeward Bound" (sorry if this one is too obvious but i had to, it's too perfect) (also yes i left out the scouring, but i think "sing all ye joyful" could fit as the victory song after saruman's death)
Homeward bound
Sing all ye joyful
"The Grey Havens" (i could, and probably will, make a million playlists about post-quest frodo and post-quest samfro only, but i think these three songs encapsulate my feelings about them well enough)
Old black train
Thus always to tyrants
The road goes ever on... pt. 2 / In dreams
and if someone's still here to read this, thanks for sticking with me through my ramblings lol <3 !!!
i love this story and these characters so so much and i wish i could talk about them all day everyday but for now doing stuff like this will have to do

yes maybe on occasion i consider about the fact that sam and frodo could possibly have a codependent relationship after the quest. maybe i think about how when you spend an entire year with someone, the most difficult year of your life, in which you experienced one traumatic event after another, and they were there for you the whole time, you might become bonded in an unhealthy manner. perhaps i ponder how this would have affected their relationship in the years after, between their return and when frodo leaves for the undying lands, balancing everyday life and the extreme trauma that refuses to leave. of course we focus on frodoâs traumatic experiences and his ptsd after, but what of sam? he is always depicted as dependable, the rock, the foundation for frodo to latch on to. but i think they were each otherâs rocks, taking turns breaking and healing and breaking together, all the while sam maintaining a wife and large family and the responsibility of being in a leadership role and frodo wrestling with the consequences of the ring and his responsibility as a baggins. what did this do to them? how do you even begin to imagine the kind of bond they may have forged in that time? sam may hold his responsibilities wonderfully, but what of the times when he cannot hold on anymore? what becomes of them when they are both too hurt to depend on one another? they are both forever changed, not only frodo. in different ways, with different paths, but both scarred. and they need each other, until there is nothing left to hold on to and frodo must depart, leaving sam without his foundation. he may have his family, but rosie didnât experience the things sam did, rosie doesnât have the perspective to even console sam through something that complicated. whether you believe sam and frodo are romantic, platonic, or a secret third thing, you have to admit that something happened and their souls have been bonded in the strongest way possible, and i believe that frodoâs departure to the undying lands probably left sam wondering if, when, and where he could continue living.

Happy Pride to Sam and Frodo flirting in Cirith Ungol
Sam indirectly saying he thinks Frodo is very brave and is the famousest of all hobbits, and Frodo indirectly saying that he likes to hear Sam talking and that he makes him laugh. What a pair.

you know what gets me about lord of the rings? evil is defeated by people who choose to fight against it without possessing absolute, or even very much, conviction that they can actually win. all the converging story threads that lead to the happy ending are carried out by people who are far, far more convinced that they will fail than that they will succeed, who had only the frailest, most foolish hope, who had blind faith and frequently wavering hearts not peace or ease or certainty.
middle earth isnât saved because no one faltered or came close to despairing or who sank to their knees in weary defeat. itâs not saved by pride or conviction or even strength. itâs saved because enough people do what they have to do even if they have to do it in the darkness. in the dust. with the ashes of hopelessness and bitterness in their mouths. because enough people took another step. Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Aragorn, Theoden, Boromir, Faramir, Merry, Pippin. And many donât. For every hero there is someone who gives into the âreasonablenessâ of despairâSaruman, Denethor, Grima, even Gollumâbut enough. Enough people said âit doesnât matter if we lose, I will keep fightingâ and then they do.
And that GETS me. It is the most hopeful thing about the lord of the rings to me. There is so much that sums up its spirit, so many beautiful quotes and moments, but to me itâs never been the most famous of the quotes about hope and love that hit me hardest but a line from the films. Before the battle for minas tirith, one of the soldiers says âwe cannot defeat the armies of Mordorâ and Theoden answers âno. but we will meet them in battle nonetheless.â
And IâThat is the spirit that leads to the conquering of evil when it comes down to it, when weâre talking about the part played by humanity alone in the fight against evil. Not the conviction youâre going to win, not farsightedness into a perfect future, not perfect inner peace or certainty. But acceptance of the real possibility of defeat, of that defeat being more the reality, the future, of your life than the victory, and then doing the damn thing anyway because goodness is worth fighting for even if you lose.
there's a level of insanity to jrr tolkien having samwise say he felt torn in two between rosie and frodo (THE IMPLICATION?) just for frodo to reply 'well that's an easy solution. get married and then you can come live with me at bag end together.' right right right right
