In this short timeframe Cater is left with, it’ll leave him half-dead after the exams week. Trey could only offer a half-smile in sympathy.  “  I’ll bring you some tea and snacks, so please try to go back to studying before Riddle catches you distracted again.  ”

     “Why does the first book have to be so dry? It’s like they write these extra boring..” Cater whines, dropping his face onto the open pages in front of him. At least Riddle isn’t present at the moment, which at least gives him some room for complaining. Maybe - maybe! - Cater is partly to blame for his own misery, considering he procrastinated the studying process until the last minute (as usual), but that’s a thought he’s pushing down to the basement of his mind, because he doesn’t need the guilt on top of everything.

disillusionment arc.

it's hard to imagine yourself when you were young. maybe you were meant to be a hero; maybe you could have been, in another world, but this world only made you sad. there seemed to be too many problems to fix and too much cruelty and too many hard lines that you did not know how to soften. the world turns and it is bloody and hard and you sit on your bed, thinking about the blood and the hardness and all you failed to do. i know it feels like you could sleep until the end of time, but i hope you don't. i hope you lift yourself out of bed one day, not to save the world, but to peel an orange and to walk in a forest; to find all the softness you could not create.

It’s harder than most days to concentrate on actually hearing Trein’s words and not let the mind wander where it wants to go - which is anywhere but this History lesson, to be frank. Luckily Cater has mastered the art of appearing moderately interested even with a blank mind, and so he’s optimistic the professor won’t call him out for not paying attention this time. It’s never nice to be called out in front of the class but today it would suck especially, with his mood already dampened and his energy levels dangerously low.

He’s reached the point where smiling hurts and talking feels like physical effort; the point where he’d usually hide in his room and send a card copy to fend for himself the rest of the day. It doesn’t normally hit him this early in the day, but lately it’s been getting harder and harder to get out of bed in the morning and keep up the pretense throughout the day. Just a temporary weakness, Cater tells himself, but he can’t deny the little whisper in his head suggesting truths he doesn’t want to hear.

A sudden buzzing in his pocket pulls Cater out of his thoughts. He pulls out his phone and blinks in surprise when he sees the name displayed on the message preview. A smile tugs on the corner of his mouth as he starts to type his reply.

He’s beginning to feel like he’s chanting a mantra, but there’s no help to that. A cotton swap coated with medicine one could only find in Vil’s room daps at the bruise beneath his eye. ❝One of these days you’ll ruin your handsome face from all these abuse. Don’t you think it’s not worth it to lose your charm from petty people that didn’t matter once you look back?❞

Whatever the cotton swap is coated with stings and Cater bites his tongue to hold back a hiss. It’s nothing he can’t handle but it would be a lie to say that it isn’t uncomfortable - even with Vil doing a splendid job at being gentle and careful. Cater remembers feeling the hit, but it didn’t occur to him how hard it must have been until he saw himself in the mirror afterwards, cheekbone swollen and red and aching. It was a heat-of-the-moment type of thing, hardly meant to be a real slap, but these guys from Savanaclaw don’t always know the limits of their own strength.

Can’t really blame him, Cater thinks to himself. He did say he wouldn’t mind it, after all, even though he’d known it was risky (read: stupid) to get involved with guys who ask for that kind of thing in the first place.

The touch is so gentle and warm it makes Cater’s skin tingle pleasantly beneath his shirt and for a moment he allows himself to close his eyes and just enjoy it. It’s hard to guess if Trey is really aware of what he’s doing, or if it’s one of his absent-minded big brother reflexes, but either way, it’s nice. Getting comforted like this is rare for Cater and every time he’s lucky enough to get it, he’s ashamed to realize how much he craves it. If only it was easier to ask for it, but as things are he has no choice but to rely on Trey’s irregular ability to sense when he’s in need of closeness that doesn’t come in the form of hook-ups with half-strangers he only knows for a night.
