Gundam Aerial Rebuild from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury
"To be completely transparent, her deal is that she used to be a child who died from the stresses of living in space [ADMIN NOTE: See next poll], and to save her her mother uploaded her into a mobile suit. In contrast to her original form (Gundam Aerial), this form is a lot less "sporty" and a lot more… agressive? Where her original form looks like a sports mech as I said, this one is much more obviously a weapon of war. One more thing I forgot to mention; as her show takes a lot from The Tempest, she's supposed to be Ariel (a wind spirit). Therefore, her binders in the back look like wings."
Do you like this character design?
Yes
No
It's Complicated
"I'm the senior medical officer of this installation and I am *ordering* you: surrender your pilots for emergency care, then stand the fuck down and report to the brigade XO for disciplinary action and remedial training-- no, no, I don't care that you're a lieutenant colonel. Move!"
No one asked but I think a solid military designation for mechs that doesn’t use the word frame is Main Battle Assault Craft (MBAC)
That gives them the nickname m-backs right away and to me that seems like what non pilots in the setting would call them
I like it. However, while Main Battle and Assault aren't terms that contradict each other, the Main part of Main Battle Tank refers to the fact that the MBT is versatile enough to cover primary combat roles, particularly the ones that used to be split among the types of tank that came before it (heavy, medium, light etc.) which covers defensive roles, armored recon roles, fire support roles, and of course, direct assault roles.
A Main Battle Craft sounds like it already includes Assault in its repertoire
Thank you!
I was trying to find the distinction for the Main Battle part of MBTs and just kept getting results about the ww1 origin of the term tank.
Main Battle Craft is pretty good, MBC still has a nice psuedo military feel to me
I think in terms of support personnel it would be similar to a helicopter squadron, at least in broad strokes, but I can’t decide on numbers of MBC per squadron or come up with a reasonable sounding number for support personnel. Im tempted to say a squadron would be four MBC with a company to support.
Sounds good to me. In the worldbuilding project I have I'm taking a lot of inspiration from fighter plane arcade games like Ace Combat and Project Wingman, so the mechs are usually deployed with supporting search and rescue teams to pick them up if they're forced to eject
The Dark Lord Emperor isnt even fucking dead?

The real reason pilots don’t retire?
Well your honor that’s pretty simple, the military doesn’t treat the pilots like living things. They’re mech equipment with specialized care needs.
Oh shut the fuck up you sanctimonious asshole, you’re just pissed off Im being direct about it.
You look at any modern military and pilots are treated like equipment, for fucks sake- sorry your Honor- but for christ sake pilots get listed along with their mech, the combat frame, in the cargo reports.
We never had a pilot retire because we run em until they break and just hope that breakdown is more pointed at the enemy than it is at us.
So no there was never a plan for Pilot Jackson to retire in the case that he survived his combat injuries. I made the simple choice of where to allocate resources your Honor.
A single bullet is a hell of a lot cheaper than full reconstructive surgery and physical therapy.
- Excerpt from the Court Martial of Major Larson following his execution of a wounded pilot.

Armored Core: you're a cog in the death machine of capitalism and freedom lies in the hands of those strong enough jam the gears and break the apparatus. you should def use the Baby Flayer 9000 to achieve that goal btw
Gundam: war is fucked man, so much senselss death and killing all in the name of lofty ideals. anyway we'll be rolling out the orphan thresher as soon as next quarter
new stimtoy idea: 80s-90s anime sci-fi cockpit

----- INTERNAL MEMORANDUM ---------------------------------
--- DISTRIBUTION: ALL ACTIVE HANDLERS --------------------
--- RE: PREEMPTIVE TERMINATION PROTOCOL --------------
#########################################
⠀
handlers are reminded that preemptive termination of a hound suspected of defection is considered morally neutral and operationally ethical.
standard method: single round, back of skull. clean. efficient. recommended.
the foundation acknowledges that many handlers prefer to elicit a fear response prior to termination for the purpose of sexual gratification. this is permitted.
ensure the subject is securely restrained before proceeding with extended methods. the foundation will not be held liable for injuries sustained due to handler negligence or underestimation of the subject's physical capabilities.
your methods are your own.

The word they used is "Handler".
That's what the locals on this planet called her and her kind. It's not from a language she's familiar with, nor is the word one she'd heard before this deployment.
She'd looked it up on her lunch break. It turned out to be quite the misnomer. Her understanding was that in the literal sense, "Handler" referred to a kind of job working with animals. Usually it carried connotations of working with hunting pets or combat animals. An owner of vicious beasts trained to kill. In the euphemistic sense they used to describe her job, a "Handler" was a person who worked or managed their subordinates like, again, subhuman animals. A synonym from her mother tongue might've been "Slaver". In this language, the one her company had its employees use, the closest equivalent might've been "employer".
She was not a "Handler". Her position did not put her in charge of any subordinate employees, paid or unpaid. She did not manage any people, she managed things.
She could see the source of the confusion though. When the cockpits are cracked open what's inside could, to the untrained eye, closely resemble a person. In truth, it was just military equipment. A sophisticated piece of software that controlled the war machine, packaged in some inconveniently squishy and occasionally damp housing. Some of the raw materials in its construction used to be a person, but the personhood had since been rinsed out, destroyed, and replaced with useful steel. Its manufacturers slotted in cybernetics and computer code and nerve-to-digital databuses.
That was what she managed. Her job title was "Operator". She operated unpiloted combat craft. She inputted commands from her workstation so that it would output results and neutralize or secure targets as necessary. Outside of active combat, she was also responsible for maintenance of the control unit. She kept its batteries charged, its fluids cycled, and its nutrients supplied. She would purge viruses both digital and organic if they appeared. On rare occasion she'd clean off the fluid discharged from its optical sensors and note it in her maintenance logbook, because that sometimes indicated software instabilities (most of the time it indicated an infection). Software instability like that cropped up when a control unit was nearing the expiry date. Past that point, the compromised programming was liable to produce a bad output during active combat and self-destruct the entire vehicle in spectacular fashion. Decommissioning the unit and recycling its inorganic parts before this happened was also in her job description.
Providing her with a replacement control unit to install in the drone after decommissioning was the quartermaster's job.
Fun Ways To Have A Handler Defect From Fascism!
The Rookie: A brand new Handler who got brought into this program for her psychology knowledge, but is immediately horrified at what she sees. Very easy to subvert; when given the nearest opportunity, she will ride in the copilot seat with one of the main Handler's Hounds for 'close-up analysis', only to cut comms and tell the Hound to book it. Generally well received by Rebels, due to strong sense of morals.
The Grief Stricken: This Handler used to be at the top of her game, until she fell in love with her prized Hound. Then that Hound either died or was permanently crippled. Now she wants out, but is stuck due to countless eyes being on her due to her status. May defect if given a definitive opportunity, especially if it means that her crippled hound(s) get a better home.
The Paperclip: This one defected out of the sheer incompetence of her superiors, and figured that if the Imperials didn't value her efforts, then maybe the cute little rebels would. Is she still a piece of shit and very fascist? Oh 100%, but the rebels need her expertise to win the war. When this war is over, then they can discuss consequences.
The Burnout: This one was already on rocky ground, always being too invested in the lives of her Hounds. After witnessing fifty deaths too many, always pointless so that some military officer could get another shiny medal for her sacrifice, she's about had enough. Similar to the Grief Stricken, but is more likely to shout Carpe Diem and breach her way out in a stolen mech.
The Broken: This Handler was captured by her former Hounds, now turned rebels. She is no longer a Handler, or a person for that matter. She exists as a warning to the Imperial Handlers, used as an example of what will happen to Handlers if they even consider joining the rebellion, much less give their Hounds kindness. These warnings often fail because Imperials are legit just that shitty to everyone, including their Handlers, that many just chance it anyways.
The Deceased: This Handler ceased being fascist because someone put a bullet through its skull.

"What the fuck is a hound?"
The General-rank Handler stares with disbelief at her underlings as they try to explain how the basis of her command structure actually looks like.
"I didn't know! I point places on a map and things happen!"
They hand her the handlerbook.
