You have to take a quiz before you’re allowed to leave a comment on the website NRKbeta. The Norwegian news site requires commenters to display a basic understanding of an article before they can give their opinion on it. The goal is to discourage uninformed “rant modes” and foster more productive, positive, and educated conversations among the readers. Source Source 2

Face of a young Italian woman with contrasting flesh and skull face
this morning NASA abandoned their mars rover Opportunity (aka Oppy) because it (she) got hit by a storm on Mars and it knocked her camera and wheels out and her last words to the team were “my battery is low and it is getting cold”. I know she’s a machine but I’m devastated. Oppy is the one who discovered water on Mars. RIP oppy ily space baby
they didn’t abandon her!! they tried eight months to reach her!!!! as their last farewell to her yesterday they played her “I’ll be seeing you” by Billie Holiday:
“I’ll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I’ll be looking at the moon
But I’ll be seeing you”
They love her so much and they tried so hard!!!
according to one of the scientists there on twitter (i’m sorry i can’t remember where I saw it it was hours ago), they all gathered in the middle of the night (they knew they’d know by 4am) and when she didn’t respond they shared memories and cried and honored her.
And they’ve been trying since June to contact her, p much constantly. They sent over 800 uploads in an attempt to contact her. That’s more than 2 per day.
It is totally legit to mourn the fact that she has finished her job and is resting now, but don’t you DARE insinuate that NASA and the people on the Mars Rover team abandoned her.
They loved her, probably more than we ever could, and they did their best and then they sent her a song saying they’d see her again one day and they’d miss her. That is not abandonment.
A Brief Introduction to: Space Mountain
(The pics above show Space Mountain’s gradual evolution from 1960s Disneyland concept art to 1975 Walt Disney World reality.)
The idea for Space Mountain originated with Walt Disney himself in the early 1960s. Disneyland’s Matterhorn ride was a hit with park-goers, and Walt is said to have asked, “Why can’t we have a ‘space mountain’ ride?”
Walt put Imagineer extraordinaire John Hench on the project. The ride was initially conceived of “as a way to simulate an astronaut’s return trip to Earth.” Hench quickly arrived on the idea of an indoor a roller coaster that took place entirely in the dark, with small stars and asteroids projected throughout. Space Mountain was planned as “the centerpiece of a newly reconfigured Tomorrowland in Disneyland,” but the project was shelved when Walt Disney died in 1966.
Ten years later, the idea for Space Mountain was resurrected. Walt Disney World had recently opened in Florida, and although the reviews for the park were favorable, visitors bemoaned its lack of ‘thrill rides.’ The folks at Imagineering immediately realized that this was their chance to make Walt’s “space mountain” a reality, and jumped at the opportunity. The rest, as they say, is history.
One of my favorite hidden details about the Country Bear Jamboree, is that all of the bears actually have official backstories given by the Imagineers. Most likely written by show writers Al Bertino and Marc Davis, these mini bios were published around the time of the opening of the attraction at Walt Disney World.
