The Sea of Stars
Part 7
“Good morning Captain Dawkins!” Astro flung on the lights. Deedee groaned, her eyes still half closed. She slept on the floor, Baby was still passed out across from her. April looked like a tangled knot while Emmet was lookingat the stars, his arms crossed.
She groaned and stretched.
“It looks like you had a good night's rest, not that there is a night.” He murmurs, now fully looking at her.
“Coffee. I need coffee.” Deedee grabbed her cup and walked into the storage. Emmet was looking around. Deedee poured herself a cup of coffee.
“That cannot taste good.” Emmet narrowed his eyes at her.
“Believe me, it’s better than nothing.” Deedee sipped on her coffee. “I never knew you liked astronomy.”
“I did become an astronaut.”
“If you’d be willing to, I would like to learn more about the universe. There’s only so much high school ever teaches you.” Deedee leaves. In the corner of her eyes, she saw Emmet cover his blushing face.
April was up by the time Deedee got back, Emmet was gone.
“Mornin’ Deedee.”
“That’s Captain Dawkins to you, Angelle,” Astro says.
“Er… Mornin’ Captain.”
“Good morning April.”
Deedee glanced at Astro.
He said nothing.
“How was your night?”
“I had the weirdest dream, I was goin’ through a swamp lookin’ for sinks. I was just… collectin’ sinks.”
“Huh….”
“Then there was a talkin’ croc and I had to fight off evil cats. How was yer night?”
“I’m just sore from sleeping on the floor.” Deedee sits in her chair. She looks at Baby. “Has he woken up!”
“He’s out. My brothers sleep like that.” April finds her hat and puts it back on. “Where’s the smart ass anyway?”
“Emmet is probably checking out storage. How are you feeling April?”
“Oooo.” April pressed her face up to the glass. “Death looks pretty.”
“Captain, it's important to keep yourself and your crew well fed,” Astro says. April’s stomach growled.
“Ignore me.”
“One portion of delicious, canned soup is enough to sustain a human for a few days. Even one could be the difference between life and death.”
“Who died?” Baby sits up.
“Baby! You’re awake!”
“Oh. You’re awake.” April and Baby’s eyes met with glares.
Day one and a half of the crew hate each other. Way to go captain. Deedee took a sip of her coffee. Maybe there’s a way I can get everyone to not want to rip each other apart.
“Captain, I would put someone in charge of routine supply checks. We wouldn’t want to eat our own crew mates would we?”
Deedee’s grip on her mug tightens, Baby looks like he’s about to throw up, and April is focusing all of her attention on outer space.
“That was a joke, please laugh. I’ll get us started. Hahahaha!”
Deedee follows with a nervous giggle that sounds close enough to sobs.
“Close enough. Who will be in charge of the supply check? It requires simple mathematics. I know that might be asking a lot, but I have faith in the crew.”
Deedee looked at April. “April?”
“Huh?”
“Can you do the supply check?”
“Uh! Oh! Yeah! Yeah! Let me go-“ She tripped out of her seat. “I’ll go do that!” She scurries off, being replaced by Emmet.
“What did happen with April… Baby?” Emmet stood a little taller.
“I told her to go take a supply of everything. Sit down.” Deedee says.
Both Emmet and Baby sat down.
“Deedee-“
“Captain Dawkins, and say it loud and clear.” Astro corrected.
Emmet sighs. “Captain Dawkins. How are we even sure that there are planets on this side of the Galaxy?”
“Well… I can only assume that there are. If one star made one solar system, I can only assume that more stars can.”
“You make a fair enough point.”
April walked it, scooting behind their chairs. “We have about 20 cans of soup.” She tips her hat up.“We won’t be starvin’ any time soon, Captain.”
She jumps over the metal island and lies on her chair upside down. Baby looks down at his feet. Deedee taps her foot, then gets up to get another cup of coffee.
Artwork for The Sea of Stars.
I've been wanting to create some proper artwork of 60 Parsecs, as I've developed an art style. This just something basic, but I wanted to try something new. I've never done a galaxy before, and I've never done silhouettes before. I hope you all like it. There will be at least one more art post of 60 Parsecs, which is the cover that I haven't decided on, but I hope to make more. Love you all!

The Sea of Stars
Part 6
Deedee slowly opened up her eyes, the stars around her were intertwined with ribbons of blue, purple, and orange. She rubbed the back of her head. It’s a little sore, but she should be fine.
Standing up, she used the metal wall behind her for support. The room was a medium size, which must mean that the shuttle is a decent size. In front of her were so many buttons that not even Emmet would know what to do with them. A few screens above the large window, no projection, showed off stats she couldn’t make any sense of. Deedee slid her hand along the wall, and the stars warped around her hand. There are thin rectangles connecting to form a fake window. That must be where the projector is, or she hit her head a little too hard.
Deedee stumbled out of the door to see a hallway. One door on the right, and two doors on the left. She poked her head in and saw a small storage room with lockers and shelves. Everything was now on the floor.
I can clean that up later.
Deedee looked at the second door and saw that it was an airlock. It’s sealed tight, making sure that nothing gets in or out. Finally, when she opened the door on the right she was greeted by three very nervous faces.
“Deedee! You’re alive!” Baby beamed at her.
“While, yes, we are very thankful you saved us,” Emmet pushed up his glasses. “I want to know how you knew it was coming.”
“I saw it out the window,” Deedee defended. “It looked like mushrooms were growing out of- my family!” Her chest tightened. “Oh my god, my family!”
April and Emmet flinched, Baby just looked on straight ahead. Deedee stepped inside the room. It was quite large, with a metal island in the center. Only about 1/3 of the island had fancy technology on it. There are four chairs around the island, two on each side. All four of them look big enough for Baby to sit comfortably. There’s a large window at the end of the island. To Deedee’s left there was a small-looking TV, maybe it was one of those computer things, a shelf full of soup cans, a lighter with April’s name engraved on it, and some strange-looking metal thing. It looked like a computer with a claw and a large red tank in the back. On her right, there are shelves with the handbook, the tape, and in the back was a bulky yellow space suit. The space suit looked like it could go outside, and next to it was another computer.
April simply points to the computer closest to Deedee. She went over and looked at the blue screen. A little face popped up, it’s a darker blue than the rest of the screen.
“Nice to meet you!” It says. Deedee fell back, her butt hitting the metal with a thud. Her arms were shaking and she looked rapidly at the rest of them.
“A.S.T.R.O. Computerized Assistant reports for duty! You must be Deedee, right?”
“Evil toaster….” Was all Deedee could murmur. “Evil toaster.”
“I’m not a toaster.” He rolls his eyes. “I am pleased to announce that due to your actions during the escape, you are the perfect candidate to become the Captain of this vessel! Welcome aboard the escape shuttle, Captain!”
“Captain? What happened to Captain Wilson?”
“It’s irrelevant now as we’re slightly 60 Parsecs away from Earth. On behalf of the Astrocitizen Program, I would like to apologize.” Astro says.
Deedee lost all feeling in her limbs.
“That’s almost 200 light-years from Earth….” Emmet lost his voice. “That’s enough miles to say that-“
“Earth is gone.” Deedee finished. “It’s all gone.”
“You got this Captain!” Astro gives a smile. Baby held out his hand for Deedee. She grabs it. Baby helped Deedee over to a chair. Her mug was sitting across the island. She took her, her hands thankful for a familiar object.
Deedee tried to hide her breathing, but nothing was working.
“The floor is yours, Captain. You should now give a speech that will guide this vessel and its crew through the stars! You've prepared it, of course?” Astro asks. Deedee pursed. Everyone looks at Deedee. She looked at everyone.
“This is it. You can really show what breed of Captain you will be on this incredible journey. We’re all excited to hear it.”
Deedee slowly nods and stands up. “Well… I have to say that the universe is smiling upon us. We’ve been blown 60 parsecs away from the Earth, but we’re safe. There are no Reds in this part of the universe. If humans are known for one thing, it’s beating the odds. The 13 colonies won the Revolutionary War, while they were at a disadvantage. Whatever new challenges the human race faces we puff out our chest and solve them head-on. We will stand tall, proud even, and tackle this head-on. We’re humans, the strongest species on earth. With our brains, strength, and determination we’ll write our own history. No matter what happens, we’ll always stand on top! Who’s ready to conquer this galaxy?”
Cheers erupted from the shuttle. If any sound could come through the shuttle, it would be the loudest. “Long live the captain!” They shouted. Deedee blushed and sat back down.
“Impressive.” Astro comments.
“What’s the next move, Captain?” April asked, shifting in her seat.
“Finding a planet to land on. I think that will be our best bet….”
“… Astro.” Emmet sits up. “How exactly did we get 60 parsecs away from Earth? We don’t have anything close to that technology.”
“For public consumption. Crewmate Ellis, do you really think that the government was content with the technology that you guys use every day?”
“You don’t want me answering that question.”
“This shuttle has a lot of experimental tech on board, such as my AI program. I knew this shuttle could go far, but with such a huge influx of power we went three times the distance it normally should have.” Astro smirked.
Emmet clicked the back of his heel against the floor.
“I can’t believe someone beat me to the evil toaster.” April kicks her legs onto her chair and puts her head into the palm of her hand.
“I’m not a toaster, Angelle.”
April’s face contorts in disbelief. “An-gal? AN-GAL?!? It’s Ayn-gel! AYN-GEL YOU OVER SIMPLIFIED STOVE!” She barked.
“Over-simplified stove?!?” Astro gasped.
“April! Let’s not upset someone who’s trying to help, and Astro, I would try to be more considerate about the people around you.” Deedee tried to sip on her coffee, remembering that it was an empty cup. “We need water.”
“There’s a filter in the storage, some old woman came and stocked it up.”
“Maegan…” Deedee held her breath. “I’m going to check out the storage room.”
“Can I come?” Baby asks.
“Of course.” Deedee nods. The two of them walk into the storage room. It’s rows of shelves, a few lockers, and something that looked like a water cooler. She started to pick stuff up and put it back on the shelves. It’s some extra food, parts, tools, paper, pens, toiletries and in each one of the lockers, there were their missing undergarments. “I found all of our underwear.”
“I found coffee.”
Deedee nearly snapped her neck. She ran over and grabbed the fat bag of coffee grounds. “You’re here! This is where you’ve been! I’ve missed you so much! Never leave me again.”
Baby left and came back with her mug. “You’re gunna need this.”
“Thanks! Yeah? Coffee!” She grabbed a plastic spoon and poured some coffee grounds into her cup. It was cold and very unsatisfying. Coffee was coffee and Baby had to watch her chug five cups.
“I would show down.” Baby puts a hand on her shoulder.
“I needed this. Have you ever had coffee before?”
“I didn’t want to make you mad.” He hung his head.
Deedee held out her mug half full of Coffee. “Try some.”
Baby took the mug and took a sip. He coughed and sputtered, flicking out his tongue. “No, no thank you.”
“It’s better out of a pot, and hot.” She finished off the cup. “We should get back to April and Emmet.”
Baby nods, still flicking his tongue out.
“It’s a sphere built around a star, the star would have to be relatively small if a human like us wanted to live on one?” Emmet nods, pointing out the window.
“Like how big of a star?” April beams, she’s leaning incredibly forward.
“It would have to be smaller than the Earth, but be a star to be bigger to have the same energy output that we get from the sun. We’d probably be looking at a star the size of a planet.” Deedee and Baby sat down silently, looking at Emmet.
“Wouldn’t we have to worry about, uh, shit, it’s the thing keepin’ us on the planet.”
“Gravity?” Deedee asked. Emmet jumped, and April’s chin smashed into the metal island.
“Good god.” Emmet looked away from Deedee.
“Are you okay?” Baby looked at April.
“Back off.” April rubbed her face and sat back in her chair. “Emmet was just tellin’ me about dice spheres.”
“It’s a Dyson Sphere, April. I was just saying… since we had the technology to go 60 parsecs, who’s to say we can’t build a planet that harnessed the energy of a sun. Think of it like a planet. The planet would be built out of ‘cells’, and those ‘cells’ would photosynthesize to give us energy.”
“Wow, that would be such an intriguing planet to live on.”
“Of course we’d have the gravity problem, because of how big the star would be our bones would probably get crushed by its gravitational pull.”
April and Baby just looked at the two of them with dumb blank looks. Emmet’s face goes a little red. He clears his throat. “It was just a theory anyway.”
The Sea of Stars
Part 5
Earth gently spun in the void of space. The clouds danced around her, and the stars sparkled. Deedee took a sip of water. Her foot was tapping on her metal floor. She looked at North Dakota.
How are you doing Delaware? She smiled. Deedee reached up and touched her red-and-white polka-dot hankie. Delaware spent her first paycheck on this hanker chief, they’ve been matching ever since. Deedee’s hair is tied up, and her lipstick is staining the cup.
She stood close to the window, looking all around the United States. That’s when she spotted a white mushroom growing in California, with red and orange veins growing into the ground. Deedee’s breath hitched in her throat.
They know where we are.
They know where we are.
They know where we are.
Another mushroom grew out of Arizona, Idaho, Washington- Deedee backed up, her legs shaking. She ran over to the escape hatch punching in the code. The hatch opened up slowly, and Deedee ran into the living room. She grabbed anything she could see. Duct tape, a handbook, and a mask. April was working on the washing machine. She dropped it down the hatch and ran into the infirmary. She grabbed the med kid and was stopped by Baby.
“Deedee? What’s goin’ on?” Deedee grabs his hand and runs with him to the hatch. “Uhh-“
“Baby get down! Get down there and catch everything I throw down!”
“What? Why? What’s happening?”
“Baby!”
The lights flash red, alarms blaring. Deedee’s never seen a man liquidate until now. She had to shove him , and her mug, down the hatch and ran into the diner, Emmet was tied in wires. He had a thick battery with him on the table. Deedee had to help him untangle. “Go to the escape hatch!” She ran up to the cupboards and grabbed as many cans as she could fit in her arms.
She handed these cans to Emmet. Deedee runs into the communication room. Captain Willson was pushing buttons and yelling at someone. Deedee grabbed some metal boxes, and a communicator. She hands everything to both Emmet and Baby.
“April!” Deedee ran back to the living room. April’s glove was stuck in the washing machine.
“Shit, shit, shit!” She tried to pull her glove out.
“You don’t have time! April, I’ll get you a new glove!” Deedee grabbed April and ran with her to the hatch. “Baby! Catch!” She had to toss April down.
She ran back into the bedroom and searched through April’s dresser. Deedee grabbed extra gloves for everyone and saw Maegan standing in the doorway, her body calm. Deedee grabbed the older woman by the hand.
“Come on! We don’t have that much time!”
Deedee managed to drag Megan to the hatch. “Come on, get down!”
Maegan shakes her head. “There are only four seats in the shuttle.”
“Maegan-“
“I live long enough, I’ll make sure that you’ll get out of here.”
Tears fell Deedee’s face as Maegan forced her down the hatch. Deedee slipped and was caught in Baby's arms. The long hallway stretched out forever.
“Go! Run!” Deedee leapt out of his arms and ran towards the shuttle. She ran to the door that read ‘controls’ and opened up the door. She looks at all of the buttons.
There was a big red button that read ‘launch’. She hit the button. The shuttle flung forward, and Deedee slammed back. Her head hit the metal wall, and the world went black.

The Sea of Stars
Part 4
“Cooooffffeeeee,” Deedee called out, opening the cupboards again. “Coooofffffeeeeee.”
Emmet is sitting at a table, swirling gin. The ice made nice clinking against the glass. Deedee stuck her body halfway into the cupboard. “Coffee?” She asked. Emmet took a drink.
“Did you really lose several pounds of coffee?”
“It’s gone! It’s all gone!” Deedee shouts. “My coffee!” She tried to slow her breathing, but failed to follow what her mother had taught her.
“I would try something to keep your mind distracted, I have some really good books I can recommend.” He narrowed his eyes. “Do you like romance?”
“Not interested, I just need coffee.”
“Romance books, I mean. If you want fantasy, I would read The Lord of the Rings. We have all four books on the shelf.” Emmet’s eyes sparkled. “I took the liberty of organizing them by the Dewey Decimal classification.”
“Cooooofffffeeeeee.” Deedee looked behind the small fridge. Emmet slowly moved his head away from her, looking at the door. Baby walked in, his hands gently placed in front of him. “Baby! Have you seen my beans?”
“Nope. But I think the capin’ might have some.”
Deedee clutched her hair. “Of course! OF COURSE! Of course, of course, of course!”
“Uh…. Have you seen my clothes? I’m missin’ a lot of my shirts.”
“I’m also missing a large chunk of my clothes.” Emmet takes another swig. “I can only assume that Maegan is doing laundry.”
Baby nods. Deedee tries to squeeze herself between the fridge and the counter.
“Deedee….” Emmet sighs.
April walked in. Her hair is curled again, causing all eyes to be on her.
“April, you look really pretty.” Baby smiles at her.
April struck Baby, her fist landing right on his jaw. Baby tackled her, pinning her to the floor.
Fists, feet, teeth, and heads flashed. Deedee and Emmet run over. She grabs a now bloody April. “April! What the hell?”
“He’s the weird one!” She points at Baby. “He called me pretty!”
“Isn’t that what I’m suppose’t to say?” Baby wiped his mouth, and some blood was smeared on his yellow gloves.
Deedee covers April’s mouth. “No, no! Let’s get you bandaged up.” She starts to drag April to the infirmary. April stood up and followed Deedee.
Deedee sat April down and grabbed the med kit. With shaking hands, Deedee pulled out some rubbing alcohol. She took a washcloth and started to clean up April. “Why did you punch him?”
“Why did he call me pretty?” April snapped back. “Why would a white guy….”
“He says that to everyone.” Deedee started to dab rubbing alcohol on the few cuts on April’s face.
“Was I pretty?” April asked.
“I would say so, but you didn’t have to punch him.”
“…. No one’s evea called me pretty before.” She muttered. Deedee bandaged April up and started chewing her gloves.
“Toaster. You have a toaster to fix. You should fix the toaster.”
“I already fixed the toaster.” April gets up. “The laundry machine is calling me.”
The two walked out. Deedee’s leg started to mock her again, the rubber on her tongue didn’t help with her tight chest. Maegan walked up to Deedee.
“Coffee?” Deedee twirled her hair around her finger.
“No, I don’t have Coffee, but I want to show you something.” Maegan walked Deedee toward the escape hatch. “The password is 4201, okay?”
“We’re all going to die. We’re all going to die!” Deedee ripped a hole through her white gloves.
“It’s just a precaution.”
“Die…. We’re all going to die.” Deedee stumbled her way to the bedroom. She found her bed and sat on it, her foot tapping out of her control. Another hole is ripped into her glove. She took them off and just started to pull on them.
Deep breaths. Her mind attempted. Deep breaths.
“Deedee?” She looked over to see Baby with a mug in his hands. He sits down next to her, handing her a blue cup of coffee. “I got some of the capin’s coffee. I also heard your favorite color is blue.”
Deedee took it with a shaky hand, her body struggling to stay steady. She took a sip and tried to keep her breathing level. Baby wrapped his arm around her, pulling her in a little.
They sat in silence, letting Deedee drink her coffee.
“I… grew up in Texas.” He says.
Deedee looks up at him. Baby is looking at her, smiling. She looked away, her face a little red. “I’m from North Dakota.”
“I’ve never been up there.”
“It gets really cold. It’s really lovely in the summer.” Deedee grabbed Baby’s hand on her shoulder, gently squeezing it. “I lived there my whole life, until I moved to space.”
She was there on earth again. The sun is shining through her window, kids are laughing outside, and the house smells like cleaning solution. Deedee was on her hands and knees, scrubbing the floor. Her hands are raw, threatening to bleed. The little girl looked outside, children her age were playing in the grass. She moved over to the kitchen and looked for dishes to clean.
“I… live in Texas my whole life, I think.” Baby says. “I like space, it’s pretty up here.”
“It definitely is. Thanks, Baby.”
He nods. Deedee finished off her coffee. “Is there more?”
“I think so.”
“I’ll see you later.” She sprinted off.
Deedee ran face-first into Emmet. “Sorry, sorry! I heard about-“
Emmet grabbed her shoulders. “There are Soviets in the Astrocitizen program. They know where we are.”
Deedee’s mug shattered on the ground.

The Sea of Stars
Part 3
Deedee’s leg twitched. She sucked in a breath. Emmet perked up, continuing to glance at her. April looked up from the toaster, a bunch of pieces were scattered around her. “Ça va? Shit, I meant ya good?”
“I’m fine.” Deedee massaged the back of her leg. “It’s nothing, just sore.”
“I would try ice,” Emmet didn’t fully look at her, still keeping his eye on the book. “It helps with inflammation.”
“I’ll definitely have to try.” Deedee smiles.
Go away! She glared at her leg. You already ruined my life!
April curses, and groans. “Stupid toaster! Why don’cha you just toast?”
“What happened with the toaster this time?”
Emmet rolled his eyes.
“It gave Tom a big ol’ bruise! Maegan should be treatin’ him by now.”
“Who’s Tom?” Deedee felt a little red.
“The fat one.” April went back to the toaster.
“The yellow one.” Emmet corrected.
The most interaction she’s ever had with the man was when he tried to flirt with her. That got a big red bruise from April. “Oh, him.”
“Him.” Emmet glances back at her.
“Can I just make an evil toaster?” April grabs a lighter and melts plastic over twisted bear wire.
“Do that, and you can kiss your butt goodbye. No one wants a communist toaster.” Emmet sighs.
“Says who?”
“Everyone.” Emmet scoffs. “Unless you’re a Red.”
Danger flashed in April’s eyes.
“Enough!” Deedee snaps. “Emmet, can you come with me to get an ice pack?”
“Fine.” He puts his book down and helps Deedee up. Her calf burned as Emmet walked her down the hall. Deedee took a step, and a sharp pain shot through the back of her calf. She fell forward. Emmet caught her. “We should go to the infirmary.”
“No, it’s fine, I just need some ice.” Deedee pushed away from him. She walked forward, her calf cutting her. Baby was sitting in the diner, sorting cards.
Deedee sat on a booth seat, keeping her legs up. Emmet grabbed a bag of frozen peas and put it on her leg. She held it on her leg, her breathing shaking.
“Coffee.”
Emmet nods and walks to the coffee maker.
Deedee rested her head on the back of the seat, the pain soaking into her bones. Those sirens were so loud that hundreds of voices tried to talk over each other. The only thing that Deedee could see was a tall grey ceiling. Her sister was trying to call to her, screaming a name that Deedee didn’t deserve. Her back is numb, eyes unblinking. Sharp pain pricked into her calf, a mocking laugh. She remembered one thought. It’s over.
“Hey,” Emmet handed her coffee. “You really do drink too much Coffee.”
“That’s like saying you read too many books.” Deedee takes a sip of her coffee. Her calf mocked her again.
“We really should get you some medicine.”
“I’m fine, Emmet.” Deedee smelled her coffee. “Does the Captain tell you about what’s going on in the outside world?”
Baby looked up from his cards. Emmet shakes his head. “I can get it out of him…. Alcohol. If I can get him drunk he’ll spill everything.”
“How about a guys' night?” Baby asks. “He won’t suspect it.”
“Deedee?”
“I bet Maegan and I can keep April.” Deedee hands Emmet the bag of peas and puts her empty cup in the sink. She walks to the bathroom, gets he hair and makeup, and checks out the infirmary. Maegan looked at Deedee, Tom was passed out on the floor.
“Uh….”
“He’s fine.” Maegan moved Deedee out of the room. “How can I help?”
“Well, I was thinking that we should do a girls' night.”
“I’ll go get everything. You keep April from escaping.” Maegan struts off. Deedee quickly refilled her cup and went to the bedroom.
“Hey, April?” Deedee sits on the bed closest to April.
“Huh?” She looked over with a dumb blank look. “I was mostly kidding about the commie toaster.”
“Do not make an evil toaster.”
April laughed. “Okay, okay, good toaster.”
“Do you want to have a girls' night? It’s just going to be Meagan and me but-“
“No,” April pulls out her screwdriver. “That sounds girly.”
“We are girls. Are you not?” Deedee took a sip of her coffee.
“Course I am, but I ain’t girly! You can fuck off with that.”
“April….” Deedee sighed.
Maegan walked in with a bunch of stuff.
“I don’t think you have a choice.”
“I ain’t girly!” April hisses.
“You are now.” Maegan walked over to the door. Deedee heard a small click. “Now put the toaster away.”
“Ya locked us in here?”
“I said, put the toaster away.”
April snarled, but did put the toaster away. “Since I can’t leave….”
Deedee linked her arm through April’s. “It’s going to be fun!”
“Yeah, yeah. Get this over with.”
April takes off her hat.
“Do you do anything with your hair?” Maegan asks.
“I comb it.” April rolls her eyes. Deedee moves her to a larger area.
“Don’t you do anything with it? Your hair is already curly. But I bet you can straighten it.” Deedee stops April from putting her hat back on.
Maegan hands Deedee various colors of nail polish. How she managed to get this stuff was beyond Deedee. She pulled off one of April’s gloves and held up the different colors “Red is always glamorous.” She says.
April’s leg twitched, and Maegan started to brush out her hair. Deedee started to paint April’s nails, making sure that each nail had an even coat
“Your hair is a mess.” Maegan hisses air through her teeth.
“It’s normally shorter. This is the longest it’s ever been.” April looks at her red nails, almost confused about what Deedee did. She slowly turns her head and her hand.
“Have you never had your nails painted before?” Deedee took another sip of her now room-temperature coffee.
“Hm?”
“Your nails.”
“Oh, I, er, I grew up with older brothers. We’d get into alota fights. I always made sure I won.”
“You never painted them yourself?” Deedee cocked her head.
“That stuff’s too girly.” April scoffed. “I ain’t got time for that, the toaster is still broken.”
“Can something be too manly?”
“Proly not.” April tried to move her head but Maegan made sure that her head was facing Deedee. The old woman had already put curlers into April’s hair. “This is stupid.”
“It just takes time.” Deedee took another swig. “You’ll look super pretty.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Deedee took off her own gloves and started to paint her own nails. Maegan did most of the talking. Deedee and April only occasionally chimed in to say something.
When April’s hair was done, Maegan took out her curls. Deedee watched the work of a wizard. The curls fell across April’s face to make her look delicate, and her eyes looked softer.
Stop staring. Deedee had to rip her eyes away. Maegan took her to the bathroom. Deedee left her coffee cup on the floor and followed.
“I don’t get the big deal.” April light resisted Maegan pulling her.
You’re breathtaking. Deedee, stop! What the hell is wrong with you? Deedee hung back a little as April walked up to the mirror.
April stopped breathing as soon as she saw herself in the mirror. Her eyes widened, and a hand reached up to touch her face. The other hand was gripping the sink, if she had been strong enough she would have broken it.
“What do you think?” Maegan asked.
April blinked. She turned to look at the two of them. When her eyes locked onto Deedee’s she ran out of the bathroom.
The Sea of Stars
Part 2
Deedee woke up and covered herself with her blanket. Her space suit was hanging up over her dresser, the bright blue contrasting with how grey everything looked. The lights were dim, not bright enough to wake up. She was wearing the same thing everyone else was, she just wasn’t used to it.
A girl next to her yawned and rubbed her eyes. She was April. Deedee saw her walk up to the dresser that said April on it. She has ebony skin, grey eyes, and short curly brown hair. Deedee gets up and grabs some new clothes, her bandana, and her space suit. She quickly made her way to the bathroom.
Deedee picked her locker and opened it up. There was her makeup, a towel, a hair brush, curlers, and a few empty hangers. She folded everything up and turned on her shower to heat up. Luckily, the curtains are blocking off sections. Deedee picked up a towel and went into a stall. As she was undressing she heard the voices of April and Maegan.
“How many boys did ya have?”
“Three boys, and I had four girls,” Maegan says. “You said you had brothers?”
“Yeah. I’ve got five of ‘em!”
Deedee walked out with the towel wrapped around her. Eyes were on her. “Hello, I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Deedee Dawkins.”
“April.”
Maegan elbowed April. “April Angelle.”
“I’ll talk to you ladies, after my shower.” Deedee left for her shower. She hung up her towel and let the warm water drip down her back. The water wasn’t very powerful, and it most likely couldn’t get hotter. She felt her chest tightening again.
Deedee took some silent deep breaths, and tears she didn’t ask for fell down her cheeks. Damn commies. Deedee dug her fingernails into her arms. I’m fine. I’m fine…. I’m fine.
She wiped her tears and washed her hair. Deedee got out, dried herself off, and started to do her hair. She started to brush out her hair, letting the extra water drip into the sink. She took her curlers and started to do her hair. Deedee tied her hair up and walked into the living room. A round man in a yellow suit was looking at the news. She turned her head away and walked into the kitchen.
Deedee made herself a cup of coffee first and foremost. She sipped on the dark liquid and sighed. Deedee took off her gloves and started to pull out a bunch of ingredients.
It was pancakes for his morning. She had to remind herself to make enough pancakes for everyone else and not just for herself.
“Good morning Dawkins,” Captain Wilson walks through the door, the man in the green suit was following behind. “What are you making?”
“Breakfast. You can sit down and wait, or go off and busy yourself.” Deedee cracked an egg into a glass bowl. The Captain flashed a smile and opened up his mouth. The other man put his hand on the captain’s shoulder.
Captain Wilber walked off with a glare. The ginger-haired man sits at a table, making his body shrink. His shoulders are hunched and his arms are folded in his lap. Deedee turns to look at him. He has a dumb blank look on his face and meets Deedee’s eyes.
She quickly turned around.
“I’m Baby Bronco.” He says. Deedee turns on the stove. She grabbed a pan and some oil.
“…. I’m Deedee Dawkins.” Deedee starts to pour the pancake batter.
“Why is your head in a scarf?” He asks.
“Oh, it just helps with the curls. Has your mother never curled her hair?”
He looks down at his feet. “I don’t know.” Deedee pours herself another cup of coffee.
“There are pancakes here if you want to eat them.”
He nods and gets up. Baby grabs a plate and Deedee shows him where the forks are.
“If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get your name?”
“The hospital.” He sits down, slowly ripping apart a pancake.
Deedee felt her cheeks go hot. “Oh, I’m sorry for asking.”
“Your name is pretty.” He simply replies.
Deedee pours herself another cup of coffee.
“I told you to slow down on the coffee.” Maegan put her hands on her hips. April was right behind her. April has on a dull blue space suit, brown work gloves, white boots, and a dull blue baseball cap.
The girls get their pancakes and sit close to Baby. He glances at them, his shoulders bracing. Deedee finished off the batter and cleaned the dishes.
Deedee tried to sit away from everyone, but Maegan forced her to sit next to April. The woman was sitting cross-legged on a chair. “I never thought I’d be an astronaut,” Maegan says. All of them murmured in agreement.
“I need a little more than that.” Maegan huffs.
“What do you want us to say?” April tried to match Baby’s tense shoulders. “No one expected to come up here. Just wait ‘til they put someone on the moon.”
Who’s to say the Reds don’t do it first? Deedee tried to push those thoughts back. She takes another gulp of her bitter drink.
“The stars are pretty.” Baby says. “I like lookin’ at ‘em.”
“It’s certainly something else.” Maegan nods. Deedee gets up to get herself another cup of coffee. “That’s enough coffee for you!”
“This is nothing,” Deedee reassured. In reality, she just filled up whenever she needed it, never counting how many meaningless cups she’s filled. “I have to finish getting ready anyway.” She cleaned her plate and walked back into the bathroom.
Deedee took out her curlers and brushed out her hair. She did some light eyeshadow, but added her favorite red lipstick. Her blonde hair curled around her soft face.
The mirror smiled at her as she walked into the lounge. Deedee walked into their bedroom, seeing a man in an orange jumpsuit studying a book.
He has dark skin, glasses that look like safety glasses, short curly hair, and a thin body. “I’m Deedee Dawkins,” She says. He glances and then fully looks at her, his green eyes wide.
He thinks for a second, snapping his book shut. “Emmet Ellis. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I assume you’ve met the others.”
“I believe so, there are pancakes in the dining room, you should get them before-“
“Yes, I know.” With one swift motion, he got up and left. Deedee grabbed herself a pen and one of her tank tops. She drew out the worst rough sketch known to the human race, but it was good enough for her to follow. Now all she needed was an embroidery hoop.

The Sea of Stars
Part 1
Deedee slowly walked into the airlock, arms crossed across her chest. Stray elbows and knees were bumped into everyone, all of them either apologizing or making uncomfortable noises. There were seven of them jammed into a small space. Six Astrocitizens, one captain.
It felt like an eternity before the other side opened up. Everyone spilled out, leaving Deedee nearly flattened. She pulled herself away from Astrocitizens and dusted herself off. Her hair had to stay a mess. The others recouped, glancing at each other.
The captain stepped forward. He’s not very attractive, with salt-and-pepper hair, a square face, and a gray space suit. “Welcome Astro cadets! This will be your new home, and these will be your neighbors. I’m your captain, Wilson. Let me give you a tour around this place.” He flashes a smile with pearly white teeth. Deedee rolls her eyes but follows him.
The first stop was the dining room, with dull red and yellow checkered floors, red walls, bar stools, booth chairs with no booth, a few pictures of pinup girls, cream colored counters, red cupboards, a stove, a small fridge, and a sink. Deedee’s eyes landed on the Coffee machine. The thought of a dark roast made her mouth water.
“This is the kitchen and dining room. You’ll eat everything in here, do not bring food anywhere else in the building. Water is fine in most rooms.” The captain walked over to a red door. It’s a wooden door, unlike the metal one behind her. “This is for the captain only, it’s our command.”
He walked across the hall, and the doors opened up for him as he walked by. Deedee made sure to let the men take the lead. The next was a place she could only assume was a lounge. There were two medium-sized couches, a push rug with a coffee table, two bookshelves halfway filled up with games and books, and a washing machine and dryer sat in the corner. A few decks of cards lay on the table. The place had too much room with items that it tried to fill. The metal floor was a deep purple and the walls were white. “This is the common room. You’ll hang out here, or do whatever you do in your free time. I don’t know, you can watch the dryer.”
The next door was closer to the first door. It’s a bathroom with lined up showers against the back, small lockers that blocked direct eye line with the showers, stalls, and sinks. The floor tiles and walls are off-white, leaning more toward the blue side.
“This is the bathroom, the ladies will shower in the morning, the men will shower at night.”
Next door was a workout room, with all kinds of exercise equipment. Deedee looked at it with awe, she’s never had time to go to a gym. The floor is the same purple metal. “Here is the gym. You guys should work out here. Since the artificial gravity is artificial your bones could atrophy.”
“Will they?” One of the men asks.
“We aren’t sure. Back there is the nurse's room.” He points to a white wooden door. “If you get hurt at all, there should be something back there should help.”
A familiar pain hits Deedee in her calf. Her eye twitches in annoyance. You’re supposed to be gone…
Everyone walks out of the lounge and down the hall. The center was carved out and held a large metal hatch. “This is where the escape pod is.” Everyone stopped breathing.
Deedee’s chest tightened, and her hands started shaking again. Oh the lies she could tell herself. Down the rest of the hall was a large bedroom with seven beds. Six of them are evenly spaced out, the last bed was jammed into the corner. There are medium-sized dressers along the wall. Deedee took a look at the white tape on top of the dresser.
April Angelle
“This is where you’ll go to sleep and stuff. All of you have a dresser with your name on top. I think that’s about it, if you need to do anything you can tell me.” The captain walks out, leaving everyone to just stand awkwardly.
One of the men takes this opportunity to leave, his motions quick and concise. Deedee left them too, her body moving towards the coffee machine. When she found the thing it was empty, unused. She opened up all of the cupboards and looked for the coffee.
She did find bottles of alcohol, all of which looked to be a different brand and type. When Deedee did find the coffee, a sigh escaped her. She took out the bag of grounds and started washing everything, the pot, her cup, and the machine. Deedee started to make her coffee. Nothing was needed for now, a simple black coffee would do fine.
An older Asian woman moves past her, searching around the kitchen. “What do you want for dinner?” She looks at Deeedee with a fiery determination.
“Uh….” Deedee averted her gaze.
“That’s not an answer. We’re all hungry, what do you want?”
“Pasta…” Her murmured. “I can cook it myself-“
“Nonsense.” The woman swatted her away from the stove. “I’m cooking.”
Deedee poured her coffee and enjoyed the bitterness. Her muscles relaxed, and her eyes shot open. “You shouldn’t be having coffee so late.”
“I drink coffee all the time.” Deedee was tempted to drink straight from the pot, but the others should enjoy some too.
The older woman poured pasta into a large pot, watching Deedee. “I’m Maegan Mann,” she holds out a milky pink glove. “I also go by Mom.”
“Deedee Dawkins.” She shakes her hand. Maegan looked back at the pasta. Deedee refilled her coffee cup, her lipstick leaving a stain on it. Meagan poured out tomato sauce and started to heat it.
“Do you have a boyfriend, Deedee?”
Deedee’s cheeks turned a little red. “Not even a little.” She looked away. Were there any men that she wanted to date? Other than a few cute ones that she’s seen at the diner, the women have been the most eye-catching.
Flowing dresses with all kinds of patterns. No matter what they wear she could always see the kind of person that was in that dress. Even the shape of the dress and the socks they wear said a lot.
Stop being weird, Deedee. She scolded herself. You’re just really into fashion. It’s not your fault that the women have prettier clothes.
Deedee poured herself another cup of coffee. “Slow down, you’re going to get yourself killed.” Maegan poured the noodles into a strainer.
“I’ll be fine.” Deedee brushed her off.
“Go sit down. Diner is ready.” The old woman strutted off. Deedee grabbed bowls and forks, setting them out nicely. She scooped herself a serving, adding some tomato sauce. She sat at a table with her coffee. The others walked in and sat apart from each other. Maegan tsked and shook her head.
Deedee and a man with very broad shoulders finished their food first. This is the first time Deedee has ever gotten a good look at him. He’s decently taller than her, white-skinned, with curly ginger hair, a unibrow, a muscular build, and a green space suit.
She smiles at her. Shoot, he noticed her staring. Deedee quickly scurried off. The astrocitizen walked to her room. She found her dresser and checked everything inside. There are tank tops, bras, underwear, and a small sewing kit.
Deedee picked up the sewing kit and opened it. There are a bunch of colorful threads, pins, and different-sized needles. Whenever she goes for inspiration she’ll definitely have to design these boring tank tops.
When she felt like she had waited long enough she went back for her coffee.

Sorry I have posted in a while, I’ve been navigating a cornfield, making some crop circles, and the norm. I had just gotten back into one of my favorite games and felt like honoring it with a fan fic. This is just part one, I would love to post more.
Special thanks:
@jayb1rb, for prereading my fan fiction, even if you had no idea what the game was.
@mr-story for just being supportive in all of my endeavors. You’re the best.
60 Parsecs
I remembered that on an old phone I drew a lot of pictures of the crew from 60 Parsecs. I had recently started watching it again, and I forgot how much I loved the game. I think the game needs more love, and I want to show my appreciation.
I used a computer to upload a bunch of different pictures from the game and then freehanded everything. I love this game, and I would recommend you go check it out.

The doors slammed shut on her right, and Chica’s hand scraped around the fleshy metal. Vanessa’s heart pounded in her ears, her body unnaturally warm. Freddy laughed, and thick, heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Her breathing hitched, and Chica banged on the glass.
Then the room went dark. Vanessa silently cursed, her body went ridging. Freddy’s music box started playing, his eyes being the only source of light. Its march of the Toreador, composed by Georges Bizet. The music box cut out, leaving Vanessa back into the embrace of the darkness. Slow footsteps stalked up to her, each one meaningful with its placement.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
Six footsteps. Freddy lunged at her, the screen lighting up so that she could see him. Vanessa let out a high-pitched scream. Game over flashed across her screen, and Jeremy’s laugh echoed throughout her ears. Her face got hot, and she pulled up the visor.
The office around her was a lot brighter than the comfort darkness of the VR game. She let her eyes adjust, then glared at Jeremy. Her fingernails were digging into the headset.
“You should have seen the look on your face!” He cackled. “FNAF 1 is the easiest one to beat, not to mention we made it easier.”
Vanessa strode up to Jeremy and shoved the headset in his face. “Fine. You beat it.”
“I will.” He smirked.
Oh, she longed to punch that handsome face. Vanessa grabbed some tissue and started to clean off her sweat. Jeremy put on the headset and hit FNAF 1 night 4. Vanessa looked at the monitors to see Jeremy’s gameplay. They had four monitors to check on everything. One was to see what the player saw, the others were to make sure the game didn’t implode from the inside out.
Jeremy’s body was relaxed his lips in a permanent smirk. Vanessa pouted and looked at the monitor. Of course, Jeremy was killing it.

The friendly little chime plays as the game clock hits 6 am. Jeremy stretches and takes off the visor. “What did I say?”
“Shut up.”
“Why the long face Nessie?” Jeremy puts the visor in its charging slot. “Jealous?”
“You wish.” Vanessa sneered. “I was just testing you.”
“Suurrree. I’m starting to think that you like me.”
“Don’t fry your implants.” Vanessa rolled her eyes. “I was never good at FNAF 1, or FNAF 2. I can play FNAF 3.”
“FNAF 3 is the easiest game. It’s hardly even a game, not to mention that Springtrap’s jump scares are horrible.”
“Which is why I’m changing it.” A spark of something came over her as she opened up the file for FNAF three.
“Changed it? Nessie.”
“Trust.” She opened up Springtrap’s model and showed him off.
“Holy shit….” Jeremy nearly shoved her out of the way. Springtrap’s outer shell looked fuzzy, mimicking the same kind of fur that would be on the original models. Some patches were long, others short. The fur matched the color he was in the photos.
The second layer was the rusted metal of the spring locks. Vanessa got to look at authentic blueprints of where the springlocks where she even got to look at a few… questionable pictures of Springtrap with the spring locks inside of his flesh. She triple-checked to see how the spring locks dug into all his muscles.
The final layer was the man inside the spring lock suit. Vanessa never bothered to learn his name, but did study every bit of his anatomy and mapped out every muscle fiber.
“Nessie, when the hell did you do this?”
“I did this at home. I spent two months on the model alone. Then…” She clicked a button and it started his walking animation. Vanessa had very little camera footage to work off of, but what she did have was a big help. Not to mention the journal entries of both of those night guards. “I updated all of his animations!”
“Good god. Why did you do this?”
“Because I’m passionate. People can tell when a game is made for money, and when a game is made with love and passion.”
“I mean yeah… but this? Don’t you think this is….”
“Overboard.”
“Yeah.”
“Yes. But it was fun.” Vanessa paused the animation. “You should play a level!”
“What did you do to the levels?” Jeremy’s eyes squinted, his lips curled into a frown.
“I made them more realistic!”
“Oh god…….”
Vanessa’s heart sank. Jeremy was supposed to be excited, maybe even surprised that she put in this much effort. Instead, all she got was looks of worry and regret. That was the kind of face someone makes when they regret switching to her department out of pity.
“Why do you do this?”
“I-I just wanted to give the fans the experience of really working at these pizza places.”
Jeremy sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Do you really think that’s necessary?”
“Yes. You know how… crazy those fans are. The number of times they’ve tried to recreate certain scenes and events….”
“Nessie. This. This is what crazy looks like. You spent two months making this model!”
“It’s…. Why don’t we show the others? Maybe they’ll like it?”
Jeremy’s face scrunched up. Vanessa let her body shrink. Jeremy puts a hand on her shoulder the same way someone would tell her that her idea was stupid.
“What changes did you make to the level?”
“Let me show you!”
Vanessa quickly grabbed the visor and ran to the area they had cleared out to play. She put on the headset and hit FNAF 3. The first night had absolutely nothing, but she took this time to look around. She got the original map from her Mom and got photos of what the place looked like. Instead of the game, this was the real thing.
Vanessa flicked through the cameras to show off all of the decorations that her mother would have placed. “Dear God, Vanessa, this is fucked up. This was nothing like the game.”
“I based it on the real location. My mom worked at the original Fazbear Frights. The place was made as a love letter to the Fazbear killer, they wanted to show off all the different kinds of weapons and ways of killing.”
“That place was real?” Vanessa heard how dry Jeremy’s throat was. “How long ago….”
“Like 20 years. The place burned down around the same time my mom was pregnant with me. I also changed the death animation!”
“To what?” The desperation in his voice made Vanessa flinch. Taking off the visor and quitting her job would be a better outcome than what she’s about to do.
Pressing the second night she looked at the cameras for Springtrap. Springtrap waved at the camera before static made him disappear. Vanessa waited for Springtrap to catch her, the dust particles floating around made her nose tickle.
“Jeremy, why did you get implants?”
“It’s so much easier than a phone. All of my data is easily accessible at my fingertips, and it’s so much easier to plan stuff too. How could you not want implants?”
“I don’t want to have to pay to use my brain.”
A rusty hand grabs her throat. She gasped as her model was pinned to the wall. Springtrap breaths, his hands tightening around her throat. Springtrap then starts to drag her to a room.
“Don’t,” Vanessa says. “This is the good part.”
Jeremy’s breath hitches in his throat.
Springtrap took her to a room where a half-naked woman was hanging upside down. Springtrap hands Vanessa a box cutter and blocks the door.
“Fuck.” Jeremy says. “Vanessa get out of there!”
“Fine.” Vanessa put the box cutter up to her throat. She slowly cut it across to show how off the blood animation. Her model died and the game-over screen flashed.
Vanessa pulled the visor up and smiled. Her joy faded as she saw Jeremy’s face. “What the fuck, Vanessa? Why would you make that?!? God, you’re a fucking psycho!”
Vanessa holds the visor to her chest. She simply sets the visor on the desk. “Why would you make that?” Jeremy questions.
She kept her face blank and walked out of the room. Jeremy didn't stop her. Vanessa walked over to the janitor's closet and sat on the floor. Her breathing stayed the same, but tears fell uncontrollably from her eyes. The shelves full of cleaning supplies reach down to grab her by the throat.
Vanessa covers her mouth to stop any noise from escaping. Her eyes are blurry, and her cheeks become stained with salt. She curled into the ground, letting the floor take her.
