omg wait i just realized the reason why betty has such a personality shift after season 1 is because her only sense of right and wrong was determined by what her family approved of so when she made the conscious decision to stop caring about that she was left with no real measure of morality because she wasn’t raised with one to begin with

cheryl and betty’s dynamic is so interesting to me because it says so much about how they each view their families like betty sees cheryl as more of a peer rather than a cousin but cheryl fully embraces betty as her cousin even if she doesn’t like her That much because she has no other family left. cheryl tries to make the best of what she has by including betty in her family. she was trapped in her house and when she’s finally free she flourishes by keeping her company around people who accept her exactly as she is. betty’s familial situation isn’t that much better but she doesn’t want new family, she wants the family she has to be better. every other season betty and alice have an arc that attempts to better their relationship seemingly fixing their everything until the next season starts and alice’s behavior ultimately doesn’t change keeping betty in a constant cycle of killing herself to hold onto a family that feel apart forever ago. it also really shows how they see themselves because cheryl knows she deserves better than the abuse her family puts her through so eventually whenever they pull something on her she just (rightfully) threatens to kill them. betty has so much guilt for being alive that when her sister dies and her own mom tells her that it’s betty’s fault she believes it, she internalizes everything her mother tells her because even as she becomes her own person her family still comes before everything else
