dying had always been a lonely hobby. just the act alone was enough to disqualify sparrow from any hope of keeping people in their life. it had always been better for everyone if no one was around to watch them suffer. but this morning, the loneliness was just too much for them. they had only been able to sleep thanks to medical influence, but waking up was hell. waking up alone was hell. getting ready for work because you need a distraction but there’s maybe one or two people in town that would take your call was hell. collapsing onto the snowcovered ground near the entrance of the mall because they couldn’t stand going in was hell. but above all of it, the hardest part was feeling so fucking alone. 

most people entering the mall chose not to pay any attention to the huddled shape in the corner near the entrance, as it was too cold to loiter and they were seeking a quick refuge in the warmth of the mall. ten or fifteen people passed by her, frozen with fear, staring at the doors as if they too would attack her. only one person stopped, startling her with a gentle touch. she didn’t know how long they had been there, but the concern on their face was evident. “i’m sorry.” they muttered, although unsure as to why they were apologizing. they weren’t really sure of anything but fear and pain and a damp cold soaking into their bones. 

zeus had stopped learning the details; when the killings had first started, he’d become obsessed with it, talking about it non-stop, searching for all of the little gruesome details as if he would be able to crack the identity of the killers himself. nowadays, stuck in a job he hated in a place where he could die at any moment--- well, shoving his head in the sand felt like the only way to keep himself sane. he couldn’t avoid learning about a new attack -- not when it had happened so close to him --, but zeus had done his best to turn away whenever he heard about it.

Anjali stepped out of the club into the cool winter night without a coat on. It didn’t matter—she didn’t mind the cold, and even when the wind did prick at her skin, she just allowed herself to enjoy the feeling. The lights from inside flashed through a poorly placed window staring directly into the alleyway—obviously build there before construction on either side of the building. She felt like she was in something of a trance for a moment as she stared at them, and then she remembered what she had come out into the alley to do in the first place. 

She braced her stiffened fingers together to protect her cigarette from the wind as she lit it—with some difficulty, as the cold made it difficult for the lighter to actually hold the flame. She took a deep drag and let it out slowly, tilting her head back and keeping her arms tight around her. She wasn’t completely exposed to the elements, the long sleeves of her top giving her some protection though her legs, in a pair of thin tights, were starting to freeze. She was starting to think that maybe she should have brought her coat outside, but she had no intention of going back in just yet. 

Her face tilted to the wind, she closed her eyes as it began to snow. 

it was rare for zeus to get a night out just for himself--- he was used to working late shifts, and even when he wasn’t, there was always dani. his weekends usually consisted of movie nights or maybe a children’s playground if the weather was nice enough to take dani out. a nightclub was something specially out of place for him these days, and it hadn’t taken long before zeus needed to step outside, quite overwhelmed with the crowded room. “shit, i’m getting too old for this.” he joked once he saw the woman standing outside, pressing his body near the outside wall of the club for some protection from the cold.
