in case folk outside the UK aren't abreast of our news, the British press just hounded a black academic to death
a rough timeline of events (from memory, there may be inaccuracies, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Cambridge professor of sociology Jason Arday is accused of plagiarism by another academic
the accuser is a "race realist" who believes that in a true meritocracy all university professors would be white. this is somehow not acknowledged much during the entire ordeal
this leads to several days of media coverage demanding an investigation, or that Arday is expelled from his post immediately
somehow this accusation that has no effect on the lives of 99.99% of the population becomes FRONT PAGE NEWS in all the newspapers for multiple days, above anything else happening in the UK or the world at large
following intense media scrutiny, Arday resigns his post as a Cambridge professor
today, august 14th, days after resigning, Arday is found dead at his home in Battersea
the British tabloid press remains, and will always be, fucking evil
thirst trap (2025) dir. audrey hobert
fortnight and teardrops on my guitar are sister songs
fortnight. the american dream gone wrong. you wake up every morning in the wrong life, with the wrong person. you're tortured by the proximity of the man you dream about—the one you were "supposed" to end up—who lives next door. your husband cheats on you, but you don't even care because the person you really want is with someone else anyway.
teardrops on my guitar. the guy you're in love has no idea you exist...and then one day, he sits next to you in class. and again the next day, and the next. and oh my god, he's talking to you! you start to feel like friends, like maybe it could be something more. until he tells you about the girl he's in love with. now every day, like clockwork, you're trapped by this closeness that you wanted so badly, but it's all wrong.
just so fascinating to me that fortnight was explained by taylor as that "american dream gone wrong" and teardrops was always explained as this sort of groundhog day, being condemned to listening to this guy you're in love with tell you all about his amazing girlfriend every day in fifth period. and high school being that time when the american dream, that happily ever after ending, maybe sounds as idyllic and aspirational as it ever will.
what's your take on the modern au stark childrens parent evenings.
robb
ned and catelyn always make sure to schedule robb’s conference right before rickon’s so that they have time to relax and feel validated for their parenting choices as they brace themselves for the inevitable that awaits them later (rickon biting someone again). all of robb’s teachers have nothing but praise for him, he’s a top student and everybody likes him and he’s doing like fifty thousand extracurricular activities including a study group that he’s just started, which they believe is singlehandedly responsible for the sudden jump in everyone’s GPA. however they’re a little worried that he’s not sleeping because he walk into class everyday with a can of red bull and pulls a new one out of his bag when he leaves. but overall he’s a good kid and he’s on track to be valedictorian, so they don’t bother about it too much. whatever keeps those grades up. although there was that really crazy scandal where he got jeyne westerling pregnant in the middle of SAT season, but everyone is kind of past that now. well except for some of the frey kids who were really pissed because everyone thought that robb and roslin frey were going to get together now that the starks and the freys are in business together, but it’s probably nothing to worry about. they’ll get over it and anyway, robb really should be focusing on his grades.
jon
ned goes to jon’s conference alone of course, so catelyn takes the opportunity to day drink in the parking lot with cersei. jon is a top student like robb, which ned already knew but he’s proud of him anyway. jon doesn’t participate in class nearly as much as robb does, but he always answers correctly when he’s called on, so at least his teachers know that he’s paying attention. he also doesn’t do nearly as many extracurricular activities as robb does, but he’s super invested in this random club that’s been around forever but that nobody really remembers the purpose of. something to do with self-defense? or environmentalism? nobody really knows, but jon was somehow elected the president and now he’s letting all these kids from the school across town come to meetings, so half of the club is currently plotting to overthrow him. ned pretends not to hear that part. unfortunately the club keeps jon so busy that he doesn’t have time to participate in robb’s study group. ned notices that jon’s teachers tend to use robb as a metric for how well jon is doing, but he doesn’t say anything because he wants to get out of there and catch the end of the hockey game. anyway the only teacher who complains about jon is his gym teacher alliser thorne, who is actively petitioning for jon to be expelled. also the music teacher tells ned that jon has really taken to the harp. ned smiles and nods before going home and immediately pulling jon from the class.
sansa
all of sansa’s teachers gush about what a wonderful girl she is, how she’s a model student just like her brother robb, how bright her future is. her english teacher is especially impressed by sansa’s storytelling abilities, and she recommends her for the honors class next year. that being said, her teachers notice that sansa is a little quieter than robb was. he would always sit in the front row surrounded by his friends, but sansa mostly just sits by the window with jeyne and occasionally giggles a little too loudly during the lesson. but it’s fine because after class she and jeyne always hang around and ask a million questions that they forgot to ask before, so they’re clearly engaged even if they get a little distracted sometimes. overall it seems like sansa generally enjoys participating in class (although she certainly raises her hand less than robb did), but sometimes she takes feedback on her work a little too hard, which ends up shaking her confidence and makes her stop raising her hand for a few days. but then she gets another assignment back and goes back to normal once she’s reminded what a good student she is. at the end of the conference, one of sansa’s teachers winks at catelyn and tells her that she’s noticed some looks passing between sansa and joffrey baratheon during class, after which catelyn excuses herself and heads back to the parking lot.
arya
well at least everybody can agree that arya is a bright kid. she has it in her to be a good student—if she would just learn to behave herself. and by behave herself, they mean that arya seems to be incapable of sitting still for long periods of time. her leg is always jittery or she’s fidgeting or biting her lip, which mrs. mordane calls “distracting.” she goes on to say that arya is a lot more talkative than sansa ever was, and that arya seems to enjoy scraping her knees at recess which sansa never did, and also that arya asks a lot of questions about the curriculum and why they’re learning this and what they need to know about that which sansa would never have done (ned is getting flashbacks to jon’s conference, but there’s still a chance of him getting home before the game ends, so he just smiles and nods). also apparently arya is always getting into trouble, like that one time she kicked a soccer ball at a fifth grader for pushing a kindergartener named weasel on the playground, or that time she talked back to a teacher after he made her friend lommy cry, or that time she hit joffrey baratheon with a stick for bothering some kid named mycah (after which cersei threatened to press charges against the school district and also arya). ned assumes that this incident is referring to a different joffrey baratheon and not the son of his childhood best friend as well as the kid who’s been staring at sansa during class. catelyn apologizes over and over again for arya’s behavior, wondering why her nine year old daughter is incapable of sitting still and silent for eight hours a day. she promises to have a talk with arya about her behavior (again), which reminds ned of similar conversations between his father and lyanna. he proceeds to disassociate. on the bright side, arya enjoys picking flowers during recess and giving them to her favorite teachers, which they appreciate. actually she’s probably one of the most social kids in the whole school and never has a problem making friends. she just goes up to some kid who’s sitting alone and starts asking them questions, which usually works out. oh also arya has been talking to some weird guy named jaqen who works in the cafeteria and only speaks in cryptic fragmented sentences, and nobody really know what that’s about except that she keeps showing up to school in masks from party city.
bran
no notes. the sweetest child they’ve ever had the pleasure of teaching, just incredibly chill all around. he asks great questions and loves to laugh and everybody likes him. the only thing that his teachers find a bit strange is that bran seems to spend a lot of time sitting by this massive white tree by the playground. is he talking to it? probably not, but they can’t be sure. catelyn tries to play it off by assuring his teachers that it’s okay because bran talks to trees at home too. it doesn’t really help, although his teachers are slightly relieved to find out that it’s just a bran thing and not a school issue. kind of like how he used to climb the school walls because the monkey bars got too boring for him, and then they had to lure him back down with a box of skittles. now bran has taken to zooming through the playground and doing flips in his chair, which shouldn’t be physically possible but apparently it is. but other than that, he’s fine. probably the most well adjusted of the kids, which isn’t a high bar but still.
rickon
suspended again for biting.

modern au where catelyn signs sansa and arya up for a local production of the nutcracker one christmas because they’ve been in dance classes since they were toddlers and it’s an excuse for her to dress them up like dolls. sansa gets to play clara because she’s known the entire part by heart since she was four and ballet is her speciality. she’s extra excited because joffrey is playing the nutcracker (much to arya’s disgust). arya begs catelyn not to make her audition because she hates ballet and she never gets any of the roles she wants, since mrs. mordane is always telling her to dance more “feminine” like sansa does. catelyn makes her audition anyway.
well it turns out that syrio forel is directing the show this year, and he’s so impressed by arya that he casts her as the mouse king. it also turns out that she’s actually really good at ballet when she’s given the freedom to combine both feminine and masculine styles without being boxed in. plus she gets to have a sword fight with joffrey on stage, so that’s a bonus. unfortunately during the actual show arya gets a little carried away and accidentally knocks joffrey out cold, so tommen has to rush in and take over for him (catelyn laughs so hard she cries) (cersei has to be physically retrained from fighting her). sansa is horrified but she tells herself that the show must go on, and she and arya both get standing ovations during the curtain call. the only downside is that arya doesn’t get to keep the prop sword because it belongs to the theater, but she tries not to be too sad about it because at least she got to play the mouse king.
on christmas day arya finds a gift from jon under the tree. it’s suspiciously sword-shaped.
modern au where the starks have a frozen lake behind their house, so they’re always out there playing hockey together. it’s usually robb and bran vs jon and arya (rickon plays for whichever team bribes him with the most oreos at the start of that specific period). ned is too good to be on either team so he’s usually the ref, plus he has to be ready to break up fights since the kids get way too into it, especially once they start enlisting grey wind, nymeria, and summer to switch off as goalies (shaggy is banned for life for biting and ghost prefers watching from the corner). arya likes to push bran around on his sled between periods, at least whenever jon isn’t calling a team huddle and giving her the most intense inspirational speech of their lives (it does make her lock tf in though). it’s cute though because whenever arya or bran score, they look over to check whether ned is watching (he always is). then jon takes off arya’s helmet and ruffles her hair and robb picks up bran and skates around with him on his shoulders while ned cheers and starts playing “we are the champions.” every. single. time.
meanwhile sansa is just skating around them all in a full figure skating costume complete with sequined skates and her favorite competition dress, practicing her figure eights and jumps and spins while catelyn coaches her from the side like they’re training for olympics (which they probably are) while lady glides along after her. with grace ofc. at first the other kids get annoyed that she’s always in their way, but then it becomes part of the fun because it’s a challenge! and also gods help them if they mess up sansa’s routine. sansa doesn’t really get what the big deal is anyway because she’s literally giving them free entertainment, like it’s basically if hockey had cheerleaders. catelyn would tell her to move over a little but also it’s kind of funny, plus she sees how much it specifically annoys jon so she allows it. you know, to make a point. so basically this leaves ned constantly switching between “ROBB GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME” and “yes sweetheart you’re doing great <3 so beautiful <3 so graceful <3 so demure <3”
oh yeah and theon. well he kind of just shuffles around the lake watching everyone play and shouting out unsolicited advice (sometimes robb listens to him to be polite even if it usually ends up getting the other team a goal, but no one else does. in fact jon will go out of his way to do the exact opposite of what theon suggests). theon would join in the game himself, but the first time he ever put on ice skates he fell and broke a hip. the worst part is that he wasn’t even on the ice yet. anyway he now believes that his talents are better utilized as a mentor. occasionally rickon tosses him an oreo.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 3.08 – The Treasons at Tumbleton
EMMA D'ARCY as RHAENYRA TARGARYEN ↳ HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (2022 - ), dir. ANDRIJ PAREKH ⤷ 3x08 "The Treasons at Tumbleton"
love how the average sansa and cersei interaction is literally just cersei cornering this seventh grader whenever she’s bored and being like “tell me something sansa. do you believe in kindness” and sansa going “umm well since you’re asking. yeah. I like it when people are nice” only for cersei to be like “lmao you are so fucking STUPID. what kind of backwards worldview is this 😂🫵 now shut up while I monologue about why you, a 12 year old child, deserve to die” and then sansa nods and goes back to disassociating.
not even exaggerating like what was she on:
