Drunk Murderbot Seducing ART, SecSys-style!
Affectional engineering - Chapter 1 - DesertWaterfall - The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells [Archive of Our Own] [M, ART&MB, ART/MB]
As a spiritual child of my other fic, here's a new one where MB gets drunk, seduces the shit out of ART, and then promptly has an emotional breakdown about this! Yayy
(well, the breakdown will be in the second chapter. for now it's just flirting, lol)
Does my aroace ass actually knows how to write flirting? Nope! But they sure as hell are Weird about each other, and that's what counts! Also I think it did turn out signiticantly more suggestive at times than I planned, but oh well. That's just how these two idiots are, I suppose
Go read it, pls pls pls <3<3<3
Are you ready for MB absolutely fucking spiralling -- and then un-spiralling with ART's exasperated help? Yes? Here you go!
Affectional engineering - Chapter 2 - DesertWaterfall - The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells [Archive of Our Own]
This chapter currently holds the record for the most unintenationally unhinged thing MB says in my fics, which is “my ribs would feel empty without your comm” 😶 So I hope you enjoy!
I miiiight write a third chapter where MB and ART properly explore the railguns, if I'm sufficiently motivated. We'll see
Enjoy! <3<3<3
(spoilers for the first page of Platform Decay, I guess)
have you folks noticed that emotion checks in PD are in present-tense when the rest of the narration is in past-tense?? I feel so embarassed about not noticing this sooner, bc I'm actually a bit of a freak about manipulating narration tense for story purposes
so what this means is that the emotion checks are real-time written notes from MB, which are included in the 'diary' like post-its in a scrapbook!!
this is so adorable what the hell
Three also interrupts to comment in real time (numerals). Which means that Three has access to Murderbot’s thoughts in ways nobody else outside ART does. The three MIs exist in ways that humans don’t quite access, even when they’re on the feed.
To be fair, in that particular instance they're not even on the feed, MB is just straight up 'partially downloaded' into Three's brain. Which is absolutely wild, obv. But it doesn't mean that they normally share this level of access. Still, I agree it means they have some insane relationship boundaries that humans can't comprehend -- which is one of the many reasons I like these books so much!
Shoutout to Dr. Volescu for getting so traumatically injured in All Systems Red that he inadvertently convinced Murderbot to show its face and talk to him, unintentionally revealing to everyone that it was actually a person...
...and then going nope nope nope I want nothing more to do with this crazy story with giant alien animals that try to kill you, rogue secunits with their own agenda, corporate espionage, assassination attempts, alien contaminations that cause zombie apocalypses highly dangerous and irrational behavior, etc. and just... goes home after book one.
I do kinda hope he shows up in a future book, even if just to be like, oh things have gotten even more crazy since I left? welp, sure glad I got out when I did. Most sane character in the series.
Volescu literally pulled this -- and we respect him for that!

A week after arriving Somewhere Else -
Martin stares solemnly at Jon's wound with tears in his eyes, Jon holds him and murmurs reassurances, promising he doesn't blame him, both of them barely whispering as if they're afraid to speak of it too loudly.
7+ years after arriving Somewhere Else -
Jon: (Trying to get out of doing the laundry) C'mon YOU KILLED ME
Martin: AND I'LL DO IT AGAIN IF I HAVE TO WASH MORE OF YOUR BLOODY SOCKS
#jon: martin i simply cannot do the dishes#martin (brandishing a knife): i killed you once and i'll do it again#jon: maybe if we kill me enough we'll end up in a world with no dishes

do you folks think that Murderbot is watching its media on an accelerated speed?? x2, x10, maybe even x50 -- it probably has the processing speed for that!
I think it does, bc with having a mind that's significantly faster than a human's, consuming information on human speed might be boring. and this would obv allow it to consume more media faster! but maybe it doesn't do that, bc then the emotional impact is not as big or smth, or maybe bc MB actually wants to stretch its media for longer, especially while it was still stuck with the company and was very bored
the only relevant canon line I can remember is "It’s downloaded seven hundred hours of entertainment programming since we landed" from ASR. 700h is not that much (~29 earth-days), but also MB might have had thousands of hours already in its storage, so it's hard to judge. let me know if I'm missing anything else from canon!
in the paragraph of ASR it mentions being free for well over 35000 hours and watching “little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music”. if it was whatching at 2x or 4x speed (plus skipping all the sex scenes) itll probably have been wayyy more than that, even with the time spent in shutdown imo.
i personally think it watches them on normal speed. i watched a lot of videos on 1.25x or 1.5x speed but it fucks up the timing of scenes plus music so i dont watch shows/films that way. plus its used to watching humans on 1x speed most of the time. so i think for maximum enjoyment/appreciation/stretching the media it has before getting new ones/etc it watches on 1x speed even if it could theoretically watch it at 4x or 8x. might also have something to do with the organic part of its brain or any other stress hormones like cortisol moving at 1x speed in the body. if an action scene causes an adrenaline spike but MB is whatching it at 50x speed, it would be stuck with the adrenaline in its system for the rest of the episode/movie
sorry if its a long reply but its interesting to think through
well now I just feel silly 🤦
you're right, that line about 35,000 hours of media doesn't make sense if MB was watching everything on accelerated speed. sure, if i really wanted, i could still stay that it meant real-life-hours, not media-hours -- but that's too silly
also that was a really great point about organic reactions being on 1x speed! i haven't considered this at all, but it makes perfect sense. this is pretty much my experience too -- i do watch non-fiction media at 1.5x/2x, but i never watch fiction like this bc it's just not the same. why wouldn't MB think smth similar?
eh, i feel a bit sad about conceding my headcanon -- but an academic part of me is honestly just happy to have this question clarified, lol. so thank you!
It definitely catches back up with reality at 50x speed though! Or if has to watch a boring documentary for some reason
I am so unbelievably jealous every time I read MB do this! Gosh I wish I could just quickly rewind and review what I missed when I zone out 🙏

I think it can skim video or other things with accelerated speed (I'm pretty sure that's the intention with the footage in Fugitive Telemetry and Network Effect) but generally I don't think it speeds up its media watching, first because why bother if you're using it to pass time anyways, secondly we have bits like this
The process only took three minutes, just long enough to finish the scene of Lineages of the Sun I’d had to pause when Thiago had decided to get me shot. — (NE chp. 2)
where it seems pretty reasonable for a 1x speed watch of a series. I think that quote is the most obvious "real-time" one, not sure if there are any others but I don't think we have any source for "it's sped up" other than "Murderbot theoretically can watch it this way" lol
shit, that's a very damning quote! i have to concede my headcanon that it's watching media at accelerated speed then :C well, we coooooould still say that scene was actually 6min real-time, but that's just silly
i'd say it's still accelerating thru boring sections, like sex scenes and stuff. but yeah, doesn't look like it's doing this normally. damn

The BEST trope is when a character tells another “let’s run away together, we can leave all of this behind and start a new life somewhere” and gets rejected. And then the rest of the tragedy unfolds
It's so deeply embedded in how Murderbot sees itself that it exists in a society with both construct and human slavery, and that it's role has frequently been that of overseer of human slavery. There are so many layers to it's own identity within an oppressive system when it's been both a victim and an enforcer. It calls itself Murderbot. It doesn't remember how many people it's killed, because of the mindwipes. It identifies itself with the word the people who are afraid of it would use. The thing that pushed it to hack it's governor module and the thing that haunts it the first two books is that it doesn't know if it killed a specific bunch of people on purpose or not. Because it does have hate for humans and it does take pleasure in violence sometimes. It's been the very real monster in people's stories. It's been the boot on their kneck. That's under it's skin. It can't just sort the world into humans and constructs. It knows what it's like to crush a human. It knew that before it knew much else.
It doesn't trust it's own kind. That's not just because it's internalized a lot of predjudice. It doesn't entirely trust itself either.
It's so... it's not just that it wants good people to exist. It's that it can only look for them and find them outside of the system it came from. It's so contemptuous in it's own narration of the people on the ship bound for a indentured servitude, but Mensah picks up on the truth anyway. "You wanted to help those people" "I couldn't have helped them" It's not a revolutionary. It doesn't imagine dismantling the corporation rim. It just wants to neither be hurt or made to hurt people. It tries not to get attached to lost causes. Sometimes it does anyway.
Everything it is, everything it does, has been forged out of being the oppressed and the oppressor at the same time. and anyway I think about that sometimes
been listening to the Murderbot diaries recently..i like it a lot

sci fi is all about getting so scared and ripping tubes out of yourself. people miss this
sci fi is all about desperately trying to reclaim your violated bodily autonomy. it’s all about asserting that you are a being with agency, and you can choose what happens to your own person, even if that’s ripping tubes out of yourself. and also sometimes an alien is there
