Katerina's face briefly looked appalled at the implication Elijah had set before her. However true it may be in reality, it was insulting to Katerina to be implied towards Colin of all people.

"I do not feel obligated to be with him!" She scoffed. "Nor have I ever felt such things. I was never worried my standing with him or his family was rooted in whether or not I denied or accepted his affections because Mr. Bridgerton is not that kind of man." She stated firmly. Honestly she never stood as tall as she did around Elijah, whether she was defending colin or her love for the man before her Katerina stood firm. A drastic difference to her usual timid nature around authority. Then again Elijah had never made her feel like she would be struck down physically for standing tall.

"I know the man I was shown you are correct in that your Grace. I fell in love with the man I was shown. The way I felt in your presence, and the way you spoke to me. I heard you talking with company when you had it. I saw you with your family when they were near. You are correct in the notion that I have but pieces of you, however you are wrong to cast out the notion that I could fall in love with them." Katerina stated.

"You stand on the notion that the missing pieces are something of a detriment where as I stand on the hill that they are simply pieces to learn and love all the same and that is where we differ the most your Grace. Your pragmaticism robs you of integral parts of life, where as my personal sentiment as you call it gifts me with the ability to live it in full." Today she is standing her ground hard with him. Confidence looks good if not just a tad scary on her. "Do you truly believe that I could not behave in society? That I could not play the same game as all of you? Wear the fine dresses, dance the dances? Socialize with those required? Do you think me so ill mannered in my low birth standing that I simply could not learn how to prance amongst society the way that you do your Grace? This is his choice as much as it is mine.

He has reassured me that he cares not of the whispers, nor the looks because he knows at the end of the day he has me, and that is more than enough for him. Mr. Bridgerton is more a gentleman than most. He isn't leading with entitlement, he doesn't look down on me for not being born of title nor does he place such on my worth. Mr. Bridgerton loves me."

Katerina's eyes watered just slightly the entire time she was responding to him, it was barely held back emotion on her part but she was trying not to make a scene. Not to draw attention to him or her. Honestly in full truth she wanted so badly for Elijah to look at her the way Colin did. To forsake duty for love. Katerina so badly wanted Colin to be Elijah, but she had accepted at least in majority that he was never going to choose her.

"And I love him."

Katerina stared him down for just a moment before she let her eyes narrow slightly, all the resentment and hurt swelling in her chest.

"And if that is not good enough for you your Grace might I remind you that every family of Noble blood or high standing started with a man who took more than he was offered."

And yes, she had heard Klaus say those words before, and she knew Elijah would know where she had heard them.

⠀⠀⠀⠀elijah regarded her steadily, allowing her words to settle without interruption. though his expression remained composed, there was an unmistakable rigidity about him now, the sort born not of anger alone but of profound disagreement.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"whether you felt obligated or not," he replied evenly, "does not alter the imbalance that existed between you. that, katerina, is precisely the difficulty. one need not perceive an inequality for it to exist." his gaze remained unwavering. "and i maintain that mr. bridgerton ought to have recognized it."

⠀⠀⠀⠀he allowed that point to rest before addressing the next.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"there is, however, one assertion you have made that concerns me considerably more."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"do you truly believe," he asked, "that entering society consists merely of wearing an elegant gown, attending dances, and exchanging pleasant conversation?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀there was no mockery in the question, only disbelief. and perhaps, now, also anger because she mentions it like some trivialities.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"do you imagine that the countless years my sister, for example, devoted to her education were... unnecessary?" his brow lifted slightly. "from early childhood until adulthood she, like every young lady of suitable rank, received daily instruction."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"languages. history. literature. music. art. philosophy. dance. etiquette. conversation. politics. the intricate customs governing every drawing room, ballroom, and dinner table throughout the kingdom."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his voice never rose. if anything, it became calmer. "those accomplishments were not acquired through enthusiasm alone. they demanded years and discipline. constant refinement."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his eyes remained fixed upon hers. "and yet you suggest that, provided sufficient motivation, one might simply... acquire all of this in passing." another pause. "would you therefore have me conclude that generations of noble families have devoted extraordinary time, tutors, resources, and fortune toward educating their children... for no meaningful purpose?" it angered him even though he did not show it because the way she says it it sounded like all the effort put into noble daughters were for nothing if a maid could equal her just because she paid attention. and yes, it might sound arrogant to believe noble daughters were in any way 'better' but that upbringing was not just gifted to them. they had to learn, had to prove themselves. had to start very early just so they might have good chances to find the best husband later and therefore secure their future.

⠀⠀⠀⠀he inclined his head ever so slightly.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i do not question your intelligence. i question your understanding of what you believe yourself prepared to undertake."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"you speak of mr. bridgerton's character with absolute certainty. very well. i sincerely hope your confidence proves justified."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his expression cooled further. "yet i cannot help but observe that his judgment has, on previous occasions, been... less than exemplary. unless rumor has become entirely detached from truth, i understand he once pursued an engagement with another young lady. an engagement that ultimately came to nothing. it was later discovered that she bore a child which could not possibly have been his if he had married her."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"one might admire the generosity required even to contemplate assuming responsibility under such circumstances. one might equally acknowledge that such generosity, had events unfolded differently, would have brought extraordinary scandal upon the bridgerton family."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"good intentions do not exempt a gentleman from exercising sound judgment."

⠀⠀⠀⠀at length, he folded his hands neatly behind his back once more. "as for myself... i have never believed that taking more than one is rightfully owed constitutes virtue." so no, this was not an excuse, at least not for him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀the faintest smile found its way onto elijah's features at her remark, subtle enough that many might have missed it altogether. "how fortunate," he observed with dry amusement, "that i do not feel the slightest bit of pressure." the words carried enough irony to make it abundantly clear that he was entertaining the exchange rather than taking it seriously.

⠀⠀⠀⠀his head inclined ever so slightly. "i shall endeavor not to disappoint, though i fear expectations have now been established."

⠀⠀⠀⠀when she mentioned the day, his brows lifted almost imperceptibly. "the day after tomorrow?" there was no objection in his tone, merely mild surprise.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i must admit i had anticipated rather more time would be afforded to your deliberations. still, i am quite certain i can arrange my schedule accordingly."

It felt strangely normal.

But Klaus didn’t trust normal, of course. He never has. Still, that didn’t mean he couldn’t enjoy it while it lasted.

“You may be entirely useless with a brush,” he continued, giving his brother a teasing look, “but you do have a decent eye. Better than most, at least. You understand balance. Detail. Restraint.” The last word came with a slight lift of his brow.

⠀⠀⠀⠀a quiet chuckle escaped him before he could suppress it entirely, his head dipping ever so slightly. "on that particular point, brother, i fear i cannot offer even the slightest objection. place a brush in my hand and i suspect i would transform even the most promising canvas into an argument against the arts."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his gaze wandered briefly toward one of the shop windows they passed, catching the reflection of his own neatly tailored attire. "that said..." his fingers absentmindedly adjusted one of his cufflinks. "i do appreciate balance."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his eyes drifted thoughtfully over the harmonious contrast between the dark fabric of his suit, the polished leather of his shoes, and the muted tones of his tie. "there is a certain satisfaction to composition. when every element complements another rather than competes for attention."

⠀⠀⠀⠀another pause followed, accompanied by a slight frown. "perhaps that is simply the manner in which my mind has always functioned."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his attention returned to klaus. "as for restraint..." one brow lifted ever so slightly. "i have long suspected that, were i to possess your temperament – or rebekah's... or kol's – the world would likely have collapsed beneath the collective force of our family's impulses centuries ago."

Tatia’s attention remained on the path ahead of them, the responsibility of making sure she wouldn’t lead them into any of the traps nature set for them taking priority over gazing at him as he spoke. But his reflections had a unique effect on her and for a moment, her thoughts took on a different direction. ❝Both are necessary in such endeavours, I believe,❞ she said, stealing a glance at him. ❝Without strength and intellect, curiosity can be a dangerous passion.❞ 

Another glance was stolen in his direction as the corner of her mouth twitched upwards. Elijah wasn’t a man who relied only on strength; nor was he someone who lacked it. It was that balance of character that drew her to him so strongly; the unique combination of all the qualities she admired, so rarely found all together, residing in one person.

It would seem that his amusement was contagious, for shortly after his comment, Tatia couldn’t help but laugh. ❝Let’s just say that our mother wasn’t very pleased with our antics either,❞ she replied, thinking back to Halia’s stern looks when she first discovered the ball of twine missing. ❝And that was another reason why we would always dismantle them in the end.❞

When his lips made contact with her skin, the warmth of them made her pulse rush quicker in her veins, causing a faint blush to rise on her cheeks. But those reactions were nothing compared to the effect his next words had on her. The suggestion that she was important enough in his eyes, that he wouldn’t surrender the search… in that moment her eyes began to sting a little, emotion threatening to pour out from her eyes in the form of tears. 

She cast her gaze down momentarily, with a sheepish smile; needing that moment of reprieve, lest emotion take over her completely. ❝Admittedly, I was much smaller back then. I no longer possess such an advantage,❞ she said, with a soft laugh. But when she lifted her eyes back at him, the amusement dissipated, leaving behind only softness and affection.

Until something else flashed across her eyes. ❝But now that I think of it…❞ her eyes dropped for a moment, shifting their focus to their joined hands, her smile growing wider at the sight. At how perfectly they fit together. ❝Perhaps he never meant to test one’s skill. Maybe he knew that if I truly loved and wished to marry someone… I would not run. I would not hide,❞ she looked back up, into the depths of his eyes. ❝I would walk him into the forest myself,❞ she added in a whisper. Knowing that just as she’d loved the brown of the ground from which plants sprouted, just as she loved the brown of the tree trunks around them… the particular shade of brown that were his eyes would now forever be woven into her heart.

At first, Tatia’s lips only parted slightly in response. He did, she thought. She did not correct Elijah immediately, giving herself a moment to exist in a world in which Viktor still lives. If only in this conversation.

❝I do miss him,❞ she replied at last, taking a deep breath before continuing. ❝Though many years have passed since he died, I still do. I imagine you never stop missing those you’ve lost.❞ Her hand tightened around his in that moment. Among her losses, Viktor was the oldest one. Perhaps the easiest to discuss, given how much dust settled over it. But she also knew that for Elijah, the loss of a brother was a wound that was not yet given enough time to fully close, let alone heal.

❝But… enough time has passed that I think I learned how to remember him not for the ghost he became, but for the person he’d been. I think…❞ she allowed herself a smile, perhaps a tad more tired one that the previous ones she offered to him; though no less sincere. ❝That’s what he would have preferred.❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀a thoughtful smile found its way onto elijah's lips as he listened, his eyes never straying far from her. "once again," he said, "i find myself in complete agreement."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his gaze drifted briefly toward the surrounding woodland before returning to her. "curiosity without wisdom can be perilous." he gestured subtly toward the undergrowth surrounding them. "the sweetest-looking berries may conceal poison. the calmest river may hide an unforgiving current. and a traveler who mistakes courage for recklessness often discovers the distinction far too late."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his expression gentled. "you understand that balance remarkably well." there was unmistakable admiration within his voice now. "it is... one of the many things i admire about you." her mind was as bright as her beauty.

⠀⠀⠀⠀his thumb continued its slow, absent stroke across the back of her hand as though committing the sensation to memory itself. the warmth of her skin lingered against his lips even after he had lowered her hand once more, and for a fleeting moment he allowed himself nothing more than to look at her.

⠀⠀⠀⠀truly look. the gentle flush upon her cheeks. the softness within her eyes. the way sunlight filtered through the trees and settled across her features so effortlessly that it seemed almost unfair. he suspected he could have remained exactly where he stood for hours without wishing to be anywhere else.

⠀⠀⠀⠀her remark earned another quiet smile. "i believe," he replied gently, "that you still possess a rather unfair advantage." his eyes remained fixed upon hers; affection rested openly within his gaze.

⠀⠀⠀⠀then her voice softened and his heart seemed to still. he listened to every word with complete attention, his expression growing warmer still.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"then..." his voice became almost reverent. "am i to understand that this excursion should be regarded as something rather more meaningful?" his smile deepened ever so slightly. "that by allowing me to accompany you into these woods... you have spared me the necessity of searching altogether."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his fingers closed just a little more securely around hers. "if so..." his gaze never wavered. "i do not believe i have ever received a greater declaration." the words had scarcely settled between them before her next confession reached him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀his smile faded and his brows drew together with immediate concern. "tatia..." the name escaped quietly. "i had not realized." genuine regret settled across his features that his questions and remarks about her connection to her brother might have unsettled her.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i am deeply sorry." his eyes searched hers with sympathy. "it was never my intention to awaken painful memories." without another word, he stepped a little closer, his free arm moving carefully around her waist. he held her gently against him, neither tightly nor possessively; simply offering comfort.

⠀⠀⠀⠀for a few peaceful moments he said nothing at all. the forest itself seemed to grow quieter around them. only after a time did he slowly loosen the embrace, though his hand lingered reassuringly against her side.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"my youngest brother passed only a few weeks ago." he was aware that she knew this, the whole village had witnessed it. his voice remained calm. "his loss was... difficult to witness." despite the fact that elijah wasn't as close to henrik as he was with, for example, niklaus. the age difference and various daily routines between them were simply too great. nonetheless, seeing his torn-up body was difficult, as well as it had been to console their griefing and devastated mother and siblings. elijah had mourned henrik but he believed he had processed his death well. perhaps it was also simply what was expected of him. to be strong and provide comfort for others.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"yet i believe you are correct. those we love deserve to be remembered for the joy they brought us, not merely for the sorrow they leave behind. there is something profoundly comforting in that thought."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his expression softened once more. "and i suspect your brother would be immensely proud of the woman you have become. you possess remarkable strength, remarkable wisdom. and a kindness that seems determined to endure despite every hardship life has placed before you."

The flower doodles on the edge of the paper grow. Beautiful shading & detail starting to form on them. Something a true artist would do. Instead of the thin-lined drawings that a bored student might do. Elijah's question has Hope stopping her drawing & throws a glance at Elijah's way. ❝He knows. He's known for about a month now. He found out for himself when he walked in on me while I was rejuvenating his potted plant.❞ That's how he learned I was a witch. ❝After that, I kind of felt like I needed to tell him the rest of what I am.❞

Hope catches the smile that Elijah forms. So weird seeing him smile. But Hope welcomes it. Elijah deserves to smile more than he likely does. Being the eldest vampire of the family must be exhausting. Having to deal with Kol's antics, which have gotten Hope involved. It's a lot. Hope knows that she isn't the easiest person to handle in the household. However, she's 99% sure that she's easier to deal with than Kol but that's because Uncle Kol has a huge temper & impulse control problems ( as if they didn't all have that ). ❝You should smile more. It suits your face.❞ She snorts then. Her pen points to the suit that her uncle was wearing. ❝It's funny because you wear suits & I just said suit.❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀at the abrupt interruption of her own sentence, elijah's brow rose ever so slightly. "hope..." his voice remained perfectly calm, though there was now an unmistakable note of suspicion beneath it. "i sincerely hope that you and your uncle are not conspiring to orchestrate yet another act of mischief."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his expression remained composed before he continued  "kol has possessed an unfortunate talent for involving others in his... creative interpretations of amusement for centuries." a thoughtful pause followed, fearing that it was already too late to stop that kind of partnership. "i would regret seeing you inherit that particular family tradition."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his attention drifted toward the increasingly intricate flowers taking shape beneath her pen. he watched for a brief moment in silence. "your attention to detail is remarkable." his observation was entirely genuine. hope seemed capable of committing to paper precisely what her mind envisions without hesitation. it's a talent (and one elijah certainly did not have), she shared with niklaus.

⠀⠀⠀⠀the revelation regarding landon, however, prompted genuine surprise. "he knows everything?" one eyebrow lifted. "including precisely what you are... and, by extension, precisely what the rest of this family is?" because there's still the possibility that he only knows about hope. "and despite possessing that knowledge, he still accepted your invitation to dine with us; that demonstrates a commendable degree of courage."

⠀⠀⠀⠀his expression softened almost imperceptibly. "though i confess i am curious. does mr. kirby also know that he will be sharing his evening with every member of this family?" albeit elijah couldn't imagine that hope wouldn't tell him this and left it as a surprise. which is why elijah could only suspect that landon may be considerably braver than most.

⠀⠀⠀⠀hope's comment about his smile caused another slight rise of his brow. after a moment, he inclined his head politely. "i shall endeavor to smile more frequently. though i make no promises regarding the quality of the jokes that may accompany such an effort." truth was that elijah rarely had the opportunity to smile. in addition, he was also a rather serious person. what did rebekah once told him? that he had a stick that's lodged up his enduringly stoic ass?

⠀⠀⠀⠀finally, her last suggestion earned something that came remarkably close to a sigh, though he restrained it before it fully escaped. his gaze lowered briefly toward the desk.

⠀⠀⠀⠀over the centuries, elijah has learned that forming... enduring attachments beyond one's family often carried consequences. not because he found mortals difficult to appreciate or because he couldn't handle losing mortals once their natural lifespan was over but rather because such relationships have, regrettably, had a tendency to end... violently. for that reason, he found distance to be the kinder alternative.

Hayley didn't respond immediately. She studied Elijah's face -- the careful lines around his eyes, the practiced composure of a man who had perfected diplomacy over centuries. Everything about him was calculated, deliberate. Even the slight incline of his head when he spoke seemed rehearsed.

❝ Mutual affection, ❞ She repeated, tasting the words. ❝ Is that what we're calling it ? ❞

A laugh escaped her -- short, bitter. She turned away from him, fingers trailing along the edge of an antique desk. Dust didn't exist here. Nothing was out of place. The Mikaelsons' entire existence seemed as curated as this room.

❝ We had a night, Elijah. One. I don't even remember most of it. ❞ She pressed her palm flat against the cool surface of the desk. ❝ And now I'm carrying his kid, and he looks at me like I'm something stuck to the bottom of his shoe. ❞

The baby shifted, a flutter low in her belly that had become more insistent in recent weeks. She resisted the urge to press her hand there, to acknowledge the thing growing inside her that had turned her life upside down.

❝ I didn't ask for this, ❞ She said quietly. ❝ Any of it. ❞

The weight of his gaze on her back was almost physical. She could feel him weighing his next words, measuring them.

Hayley turned back to face him. ❝ Why are you being so nice to me ? What's your angle ? ❞ The truth was, she was too exhausted to fight with everyone in this house. And Elijah, at least, wasn't looking at her like she was a science experiment.

She nodded toward the window. ❝ You said there were trails ? ❞ She couldn't keep the skepticism from her voice. ❝ And I can just... go anytime I want ? ❞ He spoke of threats as if she hadn't been dodging them her entire life. Still, the thought of open air, of something that wasn't velvet and gold and suffocating…

❝ Fine, ❞ She said, bending to retrieve her duffel. ❝ Show me my room. ❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀elijah regarded her thoughtfully for a brief moment, carefully weighing both her words and the apparent bitterness beneath them.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i confess," he began evenly, "i presumed there had been some measure of mutual affection between you and my brother." his tone remained entirely free of judgment. "unless, of course, niklaus forced himself upon you." his expression grew noticeably more solemn. "i sincerely hope that is not what transpired." he cannot imagine that this is what had transpired because while niklaus can be many things, there are some lines he won't cross.

⠀⠀⠀⠀his brother has never struggled to find companionship. fleeting as those encounters may often be, he has generally been discerning. therefore, elijah found it difficult to believe he sought her company without finding something about her worthy of his attention.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"his present disposition should not be mistaken as personal resentment toward you, hayley." his voice remained patient. "niklaus, we all, have spent a millennium convinced that parenthood was forever beyond our reach. one does not relinquish such deeply rooted convictions in the span of a few days."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"nor, i imagine, did you anticipate finding yourself in such circumstances." a small pause followed. "an unexpected pregnancy is challenging enough. experiencing it alongside a relationship that had scarcely the opportunity to establish itself..." he allowed the sentence to trail off delicately. "i can appreciate that this was hardly the future you envisioned." and then it was with someone who had that reputation, connected to a family that was both complicated, powerful but also feared.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"should you ever wish to speak with someone removed from this rather... unconventional family, i would gladly arrange for a physician, a counselor, or anyone else you believe may offer meaningful guidance. there is no shame in seeking counsel."

⠀⠀⠀⠀then he fell silent for a heartbeat. when he spoke again, there was unmistakable sincerity beneath every carefully chosen word.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"regardless of the circumstances surrounding its conception, what you carry is nothing short of extraordinary." his gaze lowered respectfully toward her abdomen before returning to meet her eyes. "a child thought impossible for over a thousand years."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"you deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, hayley. not because of the miracle alone... but because your circumstances demand compassion rather than condemnation." again, he fully believed that this situation wasn't easy for neither hid brother nor hayley. even more so for hayley since she was the one having to endure the physical changes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i consider it my responsibility to ensure your safety and to make your stay here as comfortable as circumstances permit. i ask for no payment, no favor, nor any obligation in return. i would merely hope that we may afford one another honesty."

⠀⠀⠀⠀he offered the faintest gesture toward the entrance hall.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"and yes... you remain free to leave whenever you wish. i simply advise caution. your condition will attract attention from individuals whose intentions are considerably less honorable than mine. should you desire safety, remaining within reasonable distance of this estate would be prudent."

⠀⠀⠀⠀without another word, he turned and began ascending the grand staircase. every step was carved from dark, polished oak, the sweeping banister adorned with intricate craftsmanship accumulated over generations. sunlight filtered through the tall windows, casting long golden patterns across the wood as they reached the upper floor.

⠀⠀⠀⠀at the end of the corridor, he opened one of the guest rooms.

⠀⠀⠀⠀the room was spacious without feeling ostentatious, furnished in warm tones, its large windows overlooking the rolling fields and woodland stretching behind the estate. unlike the formal elegance of the entrance hall, the view itself carried a quiet tranquility.

The wolf inside Mason howled with panic. Elijah knew everything. Every single secret he'd sworn to protect now lay exposed between them like entrails on a butcher's table. His palms grew slick with sweat.

❝ I don't… ❞ Mason's voice cracked. He swallowed hard, his throat suddenly desert-dry. ❝ I'm not sure what you want me to say. ❞

Mason's mind raced, calculating survival odds. He could feel his wolf pacing beneath his skin, desperate for release. The full moon was still weeks away, but fear alone was enough to make his control slip.

❝ Katherine approached me, ❞ Mason admitted, the words tumbling out before he could stop them. ❝ She wanted information about the Moonstone. About the Lockwood curse. ❞

Mason squared his shoulders. ❝ I didn’t tell her anything. I didn’t trust her enough for that. ❞

❝ Do I trust you ? No. ❞ The honesty surprised him. ❝ But I think you already know everything anyway. ❞

Mason felt the weight of centuries pressing down on him. This vampire had been alive longer than Mystic Falls had existed. Had seen things Mason couldn't begin to imagine. The realization made his defiance seem almost childish.

❝ I have no idea where that thing is. Seems like it’s nothing but trouble. ❞ Mason spoke again, his voice steadier than he felt.

❝ Why is this thing so important you to both anyway ? ❞ Then he gave another pause. ❝ And what does Katherine have to do with any of this ? ❞ Mason questioned, his wolf growled deep within, a sound of primal frustration that only he could hear.

⠀⠀⠀⠀elijah regarded him in thoughtful silence, though it was not mason's words that held his attention; it was the hesitation before them. the subtle tightening of muscle beneath the jaw. the brief alteration in breathing. the heartbeat that refused to settle despite the confidence his voice attempted to project.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"how fascinating," he observed, chosing to not (fully) believe him.  "you maintain that you told katherine nothing..." his head inclined ever so slightly. "and yet your body continues to suggest there remains considerably more left unsaid." he knew, has heard, that katherine can be rather convincing. especially because he also knew that they seemed to have a certain ... physical connection.

⠀⠀⠀⠀his gaze drifted thoughtfully across the room once more. "you claim ignorance regarding the moonstone's whereabouts." his tone remained conversational. "and yet you readily acknowledge that everyone appears intent upon finding it." why else would he apparently choose to not tell her anything if he only deemed it a simple stone?

⠀⠀⠀⠀"which leads me to wonder..." his fingers absentmindedly adjusted the cuff of his sleeve. "did you ever inquire why? did you ever ask yourself what purpose such an object might serve? or how one would even begin to employ it?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀only then did his eyes return to mason, almost disappointingly calm. "your ancestors understood its significance." another measured pause. "katherine pierce understands its significance."
