For me, tumblr is a recreational space. And am not political by nature.
BUT.
All you folks who are thinking you're not going to vote in the [fill in the blank] election because there is not a candidate you align with fully? Or one you even like?
Vote anyway. Vote AGAINST someone if you can't vote for someone. Pick the lesser of two evils.
And then pour yourself and drink, sit down somewhere, and realize that, depressing as it may be, you will likely never have a candidate that you are 100% behind. I started voting in 1989 and have never once voted FOR someone. It's always been against the other candidate. There's no glass slipper, people. You have to make do.
Not liking both candidates is not an excuse. This is not about you. This is about your community and the world you share with the rest of us.
I have voted FOR and AGAINST candidates but I always vote. And then I go out and do more.
if you wanna be an activist, advocate, or ally, I firmly believe that the first and most important thing you need to learn about (and question) is how justice is done.
if all you have a grasp on is what justice looks like- how things "should be" - but the only way you can imagine getting there is through punishing people who impede it, you aren't actually capable of enacting, or fighting for, justice.
You should at minimum know the difference between punitive, restorative, and transformative justice. You should constantly be interrogating what kind of justice you and the people around you are advocating for.
If you want a place to start, We Will Not Cancel Us by Adrienne Marie Brown is like a 2-hour read. It's short, and it's a solid introduction to why this matters and what it means, especially in activist spaces. It's directly relevant to folks participating in online activities spaces, too. (Other works by Brown are fucking phenomenal as well; they're highly respected for a reason!)
You are going to do harm until you can unlearn the cruel ways in which systems of power reinforce themselves through the actions & relationships of every individual within them.
just realized why i like sports so much, they're a tv series that you always know is going to get renewed for a new season when it's over...
For a certain type of online leftist, "the Revolution" is essentially a secular rapture: the Revolution is going to happen, we know not the day or date, and we don't need to do anything to make the Revolution happen, certainly not real-life activism, just believe the right things before it happens and fixes everything.
Just like how evangelicals oppose doing anything to improve the Earth before the rapture comes, these types believe half-measures are pointless. "We DON'T need [change that would benefit many people right now], we NEED a REVOLUTION!" We don't need gradual change; all at once or not at all, and in fact, it's suspect if you are working on those smaller-scale changes. But since all these people do is tweet and do podcasts they're uh, not exactly forcing the end anytime soon

the older i get the more frustrating i find it how little people recognize or acknowledge it when massive problems start to get solved... i get the concept of focusing on unsolved problems and injustices to keep up the pressure of public opinion, but we should also acknowledge it when great things are accomplished. we just started rolling out the first-ever malaria vaccine which will likely save millions of children's lives. about half a million people die of malaria every year and over half of those deaths are children 5 years old and under. ive seen literally no one i know talking about this huge triumph for humanity
we're also on track to completely restore the ozone layer. we have averted one horrifying environmental catastrophe and we can do it again. our planet is not doomed
we also did great at dealing with the threat of acid rain — there’s a reason you don’t hear so much about it anymore

the take that “actually the blacks won the dance of the dragons because their bloodline got the throne hehe” has always been very funny to me because the entire point of aegon iii is to ask: who cares? what did it matter? what was it all for? misery and tragedy, pointless mass death, everyone alone and betrayed and caged, a king like his land and his people: ravaged, broken, a shell. and nothing was fixed. and nothing was solved. no revolution made, no justice served, just fields of dead and charred bones and a sad sad little boy. the point— if that’s what winning is, why play?
#hotd has the chance to deliver on the pointlessness so hard. i love you tragedy. #like all the show has to do. at all. is successfully build up to a crucial moment where you realize every single character is asking #why did we do this? what was the point? what would have been enough? #but they've all gone too far now. and there's no way out #you're reading the anti war books and cheering on the war đź’” #thinking about aegon iii wanting nothing and wandering around the palace looking at the stars. rn (via @mummer)
#maybe daemon and rhaenyra are getting the last laugh in the afterlife #but aegon iii is the one who had to sit on the throne he only got because everyone else was dead #like. that kid doesn't care that his side 'won' he'd rather have his parents and brothers back (via @kazz-brekker)
#EXACTLYYYY #betting on teams is fun when youre joking #but really lets not forget that the dance achieved nothing #brought immeasurable destruction on loved ones innocent people and legacy AND FOR WHATTTT #brought a whole dynasty to its knees #never again able to achieve a sliver of greatness it had during the height of its power (via @alleygaze)
#the point is the nobility eats itself alive #the point is the throne cuts you up and devours you (via @hylialeia)
Yeah, House of the Dragon fandom is such a study in missing the point. Regardless of who takes the throne, no one wins the dance of dragons. It’s the beginning of the end of the Targaryen Dynasty, the groundwork for a later blink-or-you’ll-miss-it Baratheon Dynasty, and a carnival of horrors as far as the common people are concerned.
A Song of Ice and Fire has its prophecies and fairy tales and epic heroes, but ultimately it’s about the lack of anything noble in the nobility and destroying yourself through the exercise of power. A collection of thugs and robber barons squabbling over a chair while the people starve and unknowable mystical forces play out their own game, making fools of nobles and commoners alike.
No matter how ASOIAF ends, the Targaryen dynasty won’t last much longer and is bound to be a historical footnote. A weird regime that rose through the overwhelming force of its dragons, and collapsed quickly once that power was gone. No lasting legacy outside of misery and maaaybe a still united Westeros, little impact on culture or economics or technology. Beep bop.
thinking again about how the idea of anakin kind of haunts the OT, how he's a story to his son and a ghost to obi-wan, both present and absent whenever darth vader's on screen. he seems like a myth inside a myth, a figure belonging to a lost golden age, a hero story of old. i think it's kinda why the prequels feel so profoundly mythic to me, they're like one step beyond the hero's journey, filling out an implied pantheon in the OT stories. the fall of the republic feels kind of like a titanomachy, battles of an older generation of gods.
it's like anakin is a heroic precursor, whose brief, golden life in the light was coextensive with our brief glimpse in the films of that civilized world that was lost with his fall. that lost identity is just one step higher and beyond into the realm of legend, the realm of the jedi, when the world was good and noble, with honor and justice. darth vader may roam among the OT heroes but anakin lingers in the story as a story until the very end, when he returns to destroy the last of the titanic elder generation, making way for the new age of heroes.
This is very much what I think George was aiming for with the tonal shift in the prequels.

M94
Distance: 5,000,000 Light Years
by Robert Gendler
On visual inspection M94 appears to be a series of ring like structures. As one of the closest starburst-ringed galaxies it possesses one of the highest optical surface brightness nuclei known.
At its center is a 1400 light year stellar bar which has been an important influence on the overall morphology of the galaxy. Surrounding the central bar is an inner stellar disk with a radius of about 2300 light years. Further out at a radius of about 3500 light years is an almost perfectly circular starburst ring.

Pangenerator, Constellaction – Intricate emergent behavior using autonomous building blocks (2013)
Earlier this year panGenerator was invited by Copernicus Science Center to create an installation for the new media and technology oriented Transformations Festival and given the central idea of this years edition – empowering people via new tools such as 3d printing and new collaboration frameworks, the team decided to implement an idea they developed some time ago. They strived for something that generates intricate emergent behaviours based on very simple and autonomous building blocks. Read more here.
I like installations just a little bit more when they’re sciencey.Â
