I find it psychologically fascinating that Kiriona is named âheir to the emperorâ, because like, sure, sheâs the emperorâs daughter; ergo, sheâs his heir, but like rather famously, the King Undying isnât supposed to be able to die. Even people who really truly thought they could kill him tried to kill him and it didnât work. And itâs not like Kiriona is doing some super important administrative work; sheâs fucking around on Antioch and trying to scam her way onto shuttles. John shouldnât NEED an heir. So why is he naming one??
Kiriona suggests that John's plan involves her killing Alecto, becoming his cavalier, and him ultimately dying.
And I guess the question is how much we believe that's true.
I don't think he's telling Kiriona the truth, but I don't think he's entirely lying either. Having an heir (a corpse heir; rather a dead end as this whole succession thing goes) is certainly a statement of something.
But whether it's that he wants to die or that he's beginning to put his first draft dream to bed (and just how distinct those two things are from each other...) isn't yet clear.
