TOLKIEN WEEK 2022 | DAY 2: FAVORITE LOCATION ⇢ ROHAN
Day leaped into the sky. The red rim of the sun rose over the shoulders of the dark land. Before them in the West the world lay still, formless and grey; but even as they looked, the shadows of night melted, the colours of the waking earth returned: green flowed over the wide meads of Rohan; the white mists shimmered in the water-vales; and far off to the left, thirty leagues or more, blue and purple stood the White Mountains, rising into peaks of jet, tipped with glimmering snows, flushed with the rose of morning.

HURIN THALION
A fragment that became a stand-alone piece. Full artwork with Turin to be released soon.
so, Feanor's exile to Formenos. if we look at it through the lens of some forms of old germanic laws, we see some interesting things. the ban, the expulsion from community, was a last resort: first, there was weregild (whereby you'd pay a sum to the offended party, proportionate to the offense/crime). if the offending party refused to pay the weregild, then the tribunal might resort to the ban. at times, when the weregild was particularly high, someone could be exiled until they could pay back the sum in full.
there's no mention of weregild in the assembly situation where the Valar listen to the Noldor and Feanor and trace everything back to Melkor, possibly because tolkien doesn't at all introduce the concept of wealth, money, or other forms of payment among Amanyar elves until they reach Beleriand. the only rules Mandos sets down are that a) Feanor needs to reflect on himself and who and what he is (really interesting wording right there) and b) the offended party (others) will release him. Feanor says absolutely nothing to this.
I find it deeply funny however that Mandos jumps straight to a ban. we can probably assume (also in line with germanic laws) that elven kings in Valinor would have some kind of judiciary authority to resolve dumb disputes etc (much as in Beleriand, which we actually see happen on page with Thingol and Turin after Saeros' death), and we can therefore probably assume that some form of, if not weregild, at least compensation in spirit, aimed at maintaining peace, existed. a gift, a verbal apology. Finwe holding himself "unkinged" over Feanor's ban seems to imply some form of protest regarding a passing over of his authority, which in turn implies that deciding for a ban would have been of his competence (nvm whether it would have happened or not)(it wouldn't have).
anyway the reason why it's funny is that, from this pov, Mandos pretty much was like he's never gonna pay that shit, let's cut to the chase please

The key thing about Feanor's characterization is that he left. His father got remarried, which hurt him profoundly. And he left. In the silm it says that he married young and then he and his household traveled extensively. Finwe wanted him to be closer but he preferred to travel. Feanor avoided the thing that hurt him. That tells you a lot right off the bat. It took a valar stirring things up to drive him into a confrontation.
The other thing about feanor is that his objections to indis and her children have nothing to do with them as people. It does not matter what they are like. It seems like Nolofinwe took his avoidance personally, but it wasn't personal. It was about Miriel, and it was about Finwe, and it was about Feanor, and it was kind of about the Valar, too. But who indis was, who Nolofinwe was, these things did not enter into it. There was nothing Nolofinwe could ever have done or said to make feanor accept him as a brother, because the rift had nothing to do with Nolofinwe.
“But to some one I must now entrust my people that I leave behind, to rule them in my place. Which of you will stay?” No man spoke. “Is there none whom you would name? In whom do my people trust?” “In the House of Eorl,” answered Hama. “But Eomer I cannot spare, nor would he stay,” said the king; “and he is the last of that House.” “I said not Eomer,” answered Hama. “And he is not the last. There is Eowyn, daughter of Eomund, his sister. She is fearless and high-hearted. All love her. Let her be as lord to the Eorlingas, while we are gone.”
“It shall be so,” said Theoden. “Let the heralds announce to the folk that the Lady Eowyn will lead them!”

Well, not only beneath the trees))
There's something so wonderfully, perfectly autumnal about the Lord of the Rings and even the Silmarillion. It is profound and beautiful and filled with splendor, but also so melancholic and tragic and bittersweet that it makes your heart ache.
The elves are leaving for the Western Shores and magic is dying, but there is something so beautiful about it, even as it slowly withers, like the changing leaves in the autumn trees. There is beauty even in the loss, life in death, joy found even in the midst of pain. It is fair even in the fading.

“Legolas would not interpret the songs for them, saying that he had not the skill, and that for him the grief was still too near, a matter for tears and not yet for song.” Fellowship of the Ring, JRR Tolkien A book-version of Legolas; a first sketch to try to get a feel for the character without movie influences creeping in.

the taxonomy section of the wikipedia article about things named after tolkien and his works is insane.
loving the crazy ass scientists who named an absurd amount of grass-miner moths after tolkien characters. there’s a STUPID amount of elves btw.
also,
there’s more. would you still love them if they were worms….
there’s way more including Shrimp Baggins Family, a bunch of attempts (some successful some not) to name wasps after elves, dwarves and hobbits and like one amoeba named after gimli but honestly just go look at it yourselves it’s SO funny
The Silmarils
And the inner fire of the Silmarils Feanor made of the blended light of the Trees of Valinor, which lives in them yet, though the Trees have long withered and shine no more. Therefore even in the darkness of the deepest treasury the Silmarils of their own radiance shone like the stars of Varda; and yet, as were they indeed living things, they rejoiced in light and received it and gave it back in hues more marvellous than before.
I'm so happy with this art, made 2 versions: with and without Morgoth.
