i really loved this advice so i had to share it with you
#i don’t know#i think you can do a lot of very interesting and moving stuff#with a character choosing to fight a battle that doesn’t need to be theirs#and their reasons for doing so (via thesummoningdark)
this is a good point (especially considering plot-motivation vs character-motivation), bc i think this also counts as a problem the character can’t walk away from
if the character feels it would be morally wrong to do otherwise; if they do it for a person or a cause they care about; if they try to walk away and end up changing their mind for some other reason essential to their character; that’s still a problem they can’t walk away from!
really what this is saying is that a character needs stakes in the problem so it feels personal. they don’t need to be literally trapped or personally threatened; it doesn’t even need to be a choice they would definitely make every time. it just needs to impact them enough that they can’t walk away completely unaffected
