And the Tony goes to
Sad to say I did not do diligence researching the source here but I knew the premise from cultural osmosis and have seen at least seen or heard of a handful of the referenced Golden Age material to understand that this was made for musical fans in earnest. Unlike a lot of my favorite shows and stories, this one is pretty much pure comedy with a big heart and while still well told with song and dance and witty self-awareness from a modern lens. Even the set dressings were a nod to old timey stage production standards of ultra flat dressings drawn in forced perspective and pastel ensemble costumes that help accent the main cast's color pops. The references I fully appreciated included Oklahoma! Sound of Music, King and I but I still need to see the others. I couldn't pick a favorite scene bc they all had something going for them but some more memorable ones included Corn Puddin, the anatomy lesson, and mayor and pastor slowly coming out thruout the show. Also loved the important reminder that even misanthropes like Mildred can be redeemed in a musical world full of possibilities and songs from the heart. High praises to this cast and crew they really did the work. I can see why this won the Tony, a musical of musicals for the ages.
