I’d love to live in a world where the thug, the drag queen, the single mum, the octogenarian churchwarden and the black girl geek could overthrow the tech corporations.
“Afrofuturism is a literary and cultural genre in which the black experience is explored, often through speculative fiction. It is grounded in diversity, avoiding science fiction’s usual racial pitfalls. Although the term was first used by Mark Dery to “describe African-American culture’s appropriation of tech and sci-fi imagery”, afrofuturism is part of a wider black futurist picture which, in the words of academic Damion Scott, “represent[s] aesthetic counterparts to the struggle for equality”.”

Detroit grandmother gets real with injustice-themed Halloween decor
A Detroit woman has decided there’s one thing scarier than any ghost, ghoul or monster this Halloween: the reality of being a black person in America.
Larethia Haddon, a grandmother, decorated her front lawn with a horrifying tableau depicting the inequalities and injustices black Americans face, including police brutality and references to the Flint water crisis. In a video interview, she explains which portrayal impacts people most.

the black fist in the room: how #BLM showed up at #LWT
I don’t expect to see my blackness in tech spaces. I don’t expect to see my blackness in queer spaces. I did not anticipate hearing the words ‘black lives matter’ at the lesbians who tech conference in new york this weekend. Every now and then, I’m surprised.
I attended a talk by tiffany dockery called ‘#LiveYourBestLife: Navigating Survivor’s Guilt As a Modern Woman in Modern Times’. She discussed the impact of living a privileged life in Silicon Valley while her friends and family live and die on the westside of Chicago. Her answers came in the form of Audre Lorde poems which give me life.
One of the last talks of the day on Friday was by Janisha Gabriel, a BLM member and graphic designer who talked about the use of technology in the movement. She discussed the role of twitter and vine and how the FBI is using this same technology to monitor and surveil BLM members and stop protesters from getting their message out to the world.
I expect women of color to say the names of Korryn Gaines and Mike Brown, but it was during Jamie Chung’s lightning talk that I was really moved. They had originally been asked to discuss how their gender transition relates to cascading style sheets but decided to give a different talk. They proceeded to discuss the case of Terence Crutcher and used their time to read verbatim the voices of women of color in their community. These women discussed apathy, rage and the need to act.
Leanne Pittsford, the founder of LWT, ensures that the list of speakers at LWT are more than half women of color. This continues to show how having the proper representation affects the message and identities present in the room. I want to believe that the tech community cares about the lives of black and brown folk and today was a good day.
The graphic novel boom in Spain that began with Paco Roca's 'Wrinkles' in 2007 hasn't slowed down, and titles imported to the U.S. are finding a rabid readership.
Learning Self Care from The Sims
Learning Self Care from The Sims
by W. L. Bolm When I was 19 or 20, I bought The Sims. I was in a bad marriage and hundreds of miles away from any family; the game was a way for me to escape for hours into a digital universe where I could build mansions and lead fictional characters through their lives, at a time when I felt isolated and very lonely. To say I put hours into this game was an understatement. I was working as a…

Localization is a tough, taxing and thankless job, but because of it we can enjoy games that otherwise would have been lost to us.
Of course, there’s Pokémon, too—the names of each individual Pokémon are these carefully crafted puns, which—admittedly, sadly—don’t always translate perfectly. Consider Pidgey, which is called Poppo in Japanese, after the noise the bird makes, but is just a weird portmanteau of “pigeon” and “pudgy” in English. Worse than that, the French version is just Roucool—roucoule, the French for “coo”, and literally just the word “cool.” Pidgey isn’t cool.
But then you have something like Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee, two martial arts Pokémon that are named after famous martial arts men, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. In the original Japanese, they’re named Ebiwalar and Sawamular, in reference to boxer Hiroyuki Ebihara and kickboxer Tadashi Sawamura respectively. The localization team would have to know the references being made in the original names, and be able to parse them into a Western equivalent.
On translating games.
