yes!! we do!!
(for those unaware Tolkien gave many of his characters Old English names. Maedhrosâs is Doegred Winsterhand meaning âdawn or daybreakâ and âleft handedâ. JRR Tolkienâs son Christopher speculated that the dawn or daybreak was a reference to his hair but he was not certain. I actually donât even remember where this is from. A lot of the essays Iâve read out of order unfortunately)
thereâs actually a lot of weird facts about Maedhrosâs name, even by Tolkien standardsÂ
Is this weird that seeing that Mae's name is "dawn or daybreak" I remember that Fingon's warcry was about the dawn of a new day? @arofili
...i never made that connection before but youâre RIGHT and now iâm emo ;-;
Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: 'UtĂşlie'n aurĂŤ! Aiya EldaliĂŤ ar AtanatĂĄri, utĂşlie'n aurĂŤ! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!'Â And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: 'Auta i lĂłmĂŤ! The night is passing!'
....
Last of all HĂşrin stood alone. Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew HĂşrin cried: 'AurĂŤ entuluva! Day shall come again!'
.....and of course the reason fingon dies is because maedhros doesnât manage to come to his rescue đđđ
YES YES YES I did a post off an Art piece mentioning the name a while ago about this when I went down a rabbit hole here but I am a fandom nobody so no one saw it but I so so so love the many layers of symbolism in Maeâs OE name. I also have a lot of thoughts about Maglors OE name if anyone cares even tho Christopher was like ya I have no idea about what my dad was going for here.
