Detail photo of my sculpture "Heart's Ease (You Occupy My Thoughts)" for the Victoriana show that opened this last Saturday at Alexi Era Gallery (@alexieragallery) in Illinois. I love the Victorian practice of assigning very specific meanings to flowers, almost like and elegant and lovely Victorian version of emojis... 🌸The tiny heart's ease flowers (my mother always called them Johnny Jump Ups) are handmade out of paper, wire, and acrylic paint. The dress fabric is vintage cotton from a skirt I altered, with other little bits of ribbons and lace. "Heart's Ease (You Occupy My Thoughts)" which is a reference to the Victorian practice of using flowers as symbolic means of messaging privately, by sending a certain flower you could relay a message to someone that would have been considered improper to say aloud.
