You gotta watch this one the whole way through.
I think a great way to improve communication with kids (and adults) is to make every yes or no question a this or that question.
I started doing it when after brain surgery my husband had trouble forming responses to questions for a while, and realized that the habit was helping my students engage more truthfully with me.
Some examples:
Yes/No: “Did you clean up your room like I told you?”
This/That: “Did you clean up already, or do you still need to do that?”
Yes/No: “Are you going to sit quietly?”
This/That: “Are you ready to sit and do our quiet activity, or do you need some time by yourself first?”
Yes/No: “Are you doing anything fun for your birthday?”
This/That: “Are you having a party on your birthday, or are you going to relax?”
I think many children (and adults!) are averse to telling adults “No,” especially when a command is implied. (“Did you clean your room?” “Are you going to sit quietly?” Hmmm if I say ‘no’ I will be in trouble with the adult.) So they are actually pretty likely to just lie and say what they think you want to hear.
Presenting a this or that question provides an alternative to lying, a ‘no, but’ scenario where they are presented with the reasonable consequences of a No (“if you’re not ready to sit quietly, you cannot do our quiet activity with us yet.”)

These types of videos have done more for educating the masses about different cultures than the entire American education system

has anyone done this yet
i think a thing that would not instantly kill a medieval peasant but rather possibly scar them emotionally for the rest of their life would be to feed them a modern fruit. many plants probably did not taste anywhere near as good in the ye olden days before intense amounts of selective breeding. though i suppose this also applies to almost any modern food but i would like to single out fruit specifically.
anyway i know if a time traveler came to me and gave me a watermelon exponentially more tasty than anything i’ve ever tasted, only to vanish and leave me with nothing but the memory of a heavenly taste that i know will never even exist for many, many lifetimes beyond my own, i think i would have to lie down and cry for a bit
A time traveler could feed a medieval peasant the most incredible food he’s ever tasted, take him to a land of indescribable strangeness and beauty where people dance and sing and eat and drink all night (i.e. a nightclub), take him back home but accidentally miscalculate the year so that he arrives a decade after he left without having aged a day, and accidentally start the legend of the fae.
Welcome
I get paid to make maps of the ocean. This post is going to haunt me like that “mothers and fuckers of the jury” post haunts that trial attorney

Action movie hero voice: My name is Falcon McGuire. At age 5 I was born to the sound of an eagle crying. I graduated top of my class in The Police at age 13 after the death of my partner, Black Man. I suffered another loss after I returned from Iraq, when my beautiful pregnant wife, Diana, died in a fire at the orphanarium where she worked. Now my only loves are whiskey, refusing to get therapy, and making sarcastic quips. What’s that? The president wants me to work with a 20-year-old lady intelligence officer who has hotted boobs? Tch. I gave up that life a long time ago.
