Punk 101: Burning CDs
People seemed to like my post about how I started burning CDs again, and @olyve-oyle requested that I make a ‘how to’ for people who like to have physical copies of their music, so, here you go!
Disclaimer: There are tons of ways to get music illegally. I’m not going to explain those here for legal reasons, but there are plenty of resources out there that describe how to get music off of youtube, spotify, and tidal. However, Im always going to suggest that you buy your music, if able.
Supplies:
CD-Rs (not CD-ROMs, CD-ROMs are read only disks and you cant save new data to them once they have been created)
CD-RW Drive on your computer (you can also buy one that connects to your computer or laptop since a lot of computers dont have one anymore) RW stands for Read/Write, its what lets you burn a CD
An application like itunes (free accounts are perfectly fine) Windows Media Player also works, but I personally use itunes
Optional but Suggested: Cases
Optional: Craft supplies to decorate cases
Step 1: Obtain Music
There are a couple legal ways to do this. 1. Buy a CD (I typically get mine from thrift stores or my Dad’s old collection to make my own playlists) 2. Buy specific songs you want online. These can all be uploaded to you computer or itunes account
Step 2: Create Your Playlist
Any playlist will work, but it’s important to know how long your CD-Rs burn for. Most typically burn for 90 minutes, so keep your playlist under that. Heres the one I used for this *Note I just threw random stuff together*:
Step 3: Burn To CD-R
Admittedly I only know how to do this on itunes, so heres images showing how, and the settings that I use when burning
Step 4: Decorate
I like to use craft paper and sharpies. Just don’t draw on the bottom of the disk
Step 5: Listen To Your New CD

from this article, which is well worth the read, if only for the fun of seeing zuck get dunked on
Transcription of the screencap:
"The AI being hyped right now is not AI at all. It's really important that we all acknowledge this, that the world is selling itself a multi-billion-dollar lemon: predictive text engines that have nothing intelligent about them. They're giant sorting machines, which is why they're so good at identifying patterns in scientific research, and could genuinely advance medicine in wonderful ways. But what they cannot do is think, and as such, it's a collective mass-delusion that these systems have any use in our day-to-day lives beyond plagiarism."
In my entire life as a gamer I have only cried two times with two different video games.
One of these is Xenogears for the PS1: an absolute masterpiece of charismatic characters, a credible game world, an exceptional soundtrack and a complex story that leaves its mark on your soul.
I have to be honest: I only understood some things after a few years by reading articles and replaying the game because, as I said, the story is complex and deep but wonderful, and even if you don't understand something while you play, it still gets inside you.
It touches several buttons within you and let your soul resonate with the story and the characters troubles.
The gameplay is awesome, 3d isometric with 2d sprites with free view angle.
Glorious, turn based, combat system with combos, but I don't want to spoil to much for people that hasn't played it yet.
Fei and Elly, after all these years, still have a place on my soul: they are there, with all the other characters and their incredible story.
The ending song still, after countless playbacks, raises strong emotions, and sometimes a tear appears in my eyes...
If you haven't played it yet, you should do as soon as possible.
Recently I get this awesome compact stereo for it's cassette deck: I've tons of music cassettes and listening to them make me feel better.
Picking the cassette from it's cover, inserting it into the deck and hitting the play button, with all the typical noises, heals my soul.
In a world where you have to run every moment of your life, having some time for finding the right cassette for that moment and inserting it into the stereo deck is relaxing, listening from a 25yo cassette is refreshing.
There are no followers counter on my cassettes, no likes, no comments, nothing: just the music, the wonderful cover art and the booklet inside the cover.
Am I nostalgic? Or do I need to slow down?
Next step: I want a Walkman.
