Hey, I have like an actual real business question so feel free to chime in if you know more than I do:
Why the fuck do multi billion dollar companies need to worry about the opinions of investors or politicians? If you are a multimillion or billion dollar mega corporation, have you not surpassed the need for that kind of outside influence?
Independent of the financial support from outside their business, they are raking in multiple millions or billions of dollars every year, AFTER paying all of the wages, business expenses and loans (this is how I've been told profits work; it's what's left after they've paid everything). They have the financial means to pay their employees a more livable wage, give them better benefits like health insurance including vision and dental, build the facilities for and provide safe, free, on-site daycare, after school care (with transportation) and more! With numbers that big in play, I am fairly certain that even if these mega corporations were taxed appropriately, and more tightly regulated, it still would not create any sizable dent in those profits. They would still have millions or billions in excess funds.
Why is there even an argument for "looking good for investors" after you pass a certain financial threshold? I would in fact argue that making sure your employees and their families have all of their needs met would look better to investors than paying them just enough that they don't qualify for some government assistance but not enough to actually successfully live off of independent of other government assistance programs or help from family/charity. Genuinely, cheaping out to say "look how much money we made by starving our employees, and running them ragged in absolutely any way you could possibly think of, and still demanding absolutely every drop left in their body from them while on the job, and dictating, to some extent, how they live their lives off the job!" Looks so bad? From what I've seen the general American populace seems to share this opinion in varying degrees. The next logical step in that process should be, "ok, now with those several billion dollars in profits (reminder, that is EXCESS MONEY), how much of that amount would it cost to implement positive changes in the lives of our employees that would improve employee retention, morale, and overall their lives as human beings? WHILE ALSO MAKING US LOOK BETTER AS A COMPANY BY TRAILBLAZING NEW STANDARDS OF EMPLOYEE CARE." AND EVEN AFTER THAT, depending on exactly how big of numbers and how many zeros we're working with here there would likely still be millions of dollars or more remaining for the incompetent upper crust. 
Executives come storming through those doors (if they bother to show up themselves and not just have it be some mandatory video training, with no real feedback forum) demanding immediate, flawless implementation of illogical, cumbersome, militant, sometimes borderline inhumane policies that serve nobody but the top earning executives, many of whom don't even know *on paper* what it takes to run these stores on the ground level, and in many cases do not, or have never had, any actual experience in performing that labor themselves.
