Las metáforas son eficientes en la medida en que se alejan del objeto a que aluden. La más cercana es la no-metáfora, la simple reproducción del objeto: “El pájaro es como el pájaro” es, desde luego, una proposición correctísima, hasta el punto que es inservible. La identidad da un efecto cero.
La metáfora es útil precisamente porque representa algo distinto. Pero no totalmente distinto; lo que quiere decir que hay un núcleo común, hundido y oculto por los atributos exteriores; y tanto más alejada es la metáfora, menor es el número de atributos comunes y más profundo es, por lo tanto, el núcleo idéntico. De ahí ese poder de alcanzar esencias profundas que tiene la poesía.
