Steve Rogers is back
The Russo brothers have posted
Hey!! Fun Fact! This episode (Terror on the Docks)Â was directed by Randal Kleiser who, along with directing Grease (1978), also wrote and directed Itâs My Party (1996), a film that showed his intensely personal experiences of being a gay man during the AIDS epidemic. I think itâs really interesting that the first time we see this understanding of how their relationship can be interpreted, its in a scene directed by a gay man, especially when their reaction seems to come down to the direction more than the writing.
Rest in peace David âmy opinion of the show is that itâs a love story between two menâ Soul. You would have loved the scenes of male tenderness that play out in my head between you and your best friend. By the way thanks for taking literally every single available opportunity to gently stroke his face and/or look fondly annoyed by him. King.
The quote btw:
This interview is just brilliant.
From "nobody directs Paul", over the famous quote about the love story between two men, to being left utterly speechless by the drivel in the gossip mags.
And then, of course, his reaction to the suggestion that the show was 'inspiring criminal acts': "It's entertainment! (...) I've gotta give credit to the people who are watching it, that they've also got their heads on straight."
Never gets old.
Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul in photos taken in June of 1975 to promote their crime series Starsky and Hutch (ABC, 1975-1979). Paul stated in an interview with The New York Postâs Page Six in 2021 that he designed the T-shirts he and David wore in this photo shoot as gifts for the cast and crew. âLittle did I know that the colorful rainbow of colors that I used were gay pride colors,â he explained, while also acknowledging that the series had gay undertones. âI think itâs important to understand that yeah, thereâs homoerotic elements. I think the reality is David and I are for the most part, if you have to define oneself, as straight. But you have to be able to recognize thereâs a part of all of us that is homoerotic. We see someone of the same sex thatâs attractive, we either deny it or acknowledge that itâs there. Does that mean weâre going to have a homosexual relationship with that person? Not necessarily, but it becomes much more freeing to be able to acknowledge something that exists, maybe kid about it, play with it a little bit and move on. One thing David and I had and still have is a very deep friendship.â
RIP David Soul, 1943-2024
Am I just watching this through rose colored glasses or is PMG really admitting him and David had feelings for each other?

Paul and David, Starsky and Hutch
Forever
feeling nostalgic and sad
David Soul as Detective Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson and Paul Michael Glaser as Detective Dave Starsky in the groundbreaking and progressive for the era lgbtq+ themed episode of Starsky & Hutch entitled Death in a Different Place, originally broadcast by ABC on October 15th, 1977. During an interview with the Television Academy recorded on August 6th, 2014, Paul Michael Glaser discussed the close relationship he developed with his co-star David Soul: "My chemistry with David, interestingly enough, was very much about what happened in front of the camera. Off-camera we didn't have a whole lot to talk about. We'd see each other at a party, 'hey, how are you?', 'fine, how are you?', 'fine', and there was nothing more to talk about. It wasn't that there wasn't anything there, it's that I don't think either of us felt comfortable talking about it. And then the years went by and the last few years, when you've had a relationship that's existed that long, you can't help but to really care and love that person. David and I have become much more comfortable with understanding and acknowledging our feelings. At the time it was probably more difficult, but when we got on camera, it was all there. It was really interesting. We were kinda joined at the hip, so as uncomfortable as we might've been as younger men with our feelings, we weren't uncomfortable with them in front of the camera. We were joined in this destiny, we were joined to do the best we could possibly do with the show." Paul later stated about Starsky & Hutch during an interview with The New York Post's Page Six in 2021: âI think itâs important to understand that yeah, thereâs homoerotic elements. One thing David and I had and still have is a very deep friendship.â

Oh, David...
I dreaded this day, and it hurts just as much as I thought it would.
But you lived a long life, and, most of all, you're with Robert again--that part of yourself you said you've been missing since that equally horrible day in 2016.
Though you're both gone, Napoleon and Illya will live on, always ready to save the day once again.
