I feel like a lot of people get "All Art is Political" confused with "All Art is made with Political Intentions" which is not the same.
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

WELCOME TO MARKETING MONTH
Hi everyone, it's time to crack this case.... together. Please feel free to do submissions of questions for this event! Seriously! It's gonna be an entire month of us answering marketing questions and trying to figure out what to do about this conundrum.
TODAY'S QUESTION:
"I see so many marketing techniques that are so... ew. How do I avoid them?" Time to dish, my loves! Tell us EVERYTHING you hate to see in marketing! And everything you noticed works on you! (Might want to crack your knuckles first, dears).
Things i dislike:
- marketing SOLELY based on tropes. it can work if you give tropes WITH the premise, and if the tropes you share actually tell you something interesting about the book. If you only market as “spicy slowburn morally grey enemies to lovers only one bed who did this to you” I’m gonna assume you just shoehorned in a bunch of tropes and have no plot. Because it tells me NOTHING!
- the idea that authors have to make their personalities compatible with social media in order to sell books. i am a writer, not an internet personality/influencer
- additionally, authors feeling the need to treat their books only as content. while YES, you are trying to sell a product, i feel like it undermines the creative effort when you treat it as nothing more than content creation yk? might sound cheesy, but writing is literally putting a piece of your soul out there that you spent countless hours on and I don’t like to see how consumer culture is affecting that
- having to censor yourself in order to post about your story. A while back I tried sharing some snippets of my WIP on YouTube shorts only to get immediately shadowbanned because (god forbid) a character said fuck. let me advertise my edgy characters!!!
Things I DO enjoy:
- I’ve seen people make edits using photos from their moodboards with a brief explanation of the premise and/or characters. I love that!!!
- if the author is also an artist, drawing scenes from the story !
- making memes with the characters!! it always intrigues me !

I feel like when I say ‘relatable’ what I really mean is ‘resonant.’ I don’t want characters who I feel are like me, I want characters who have emotions so strong I can feel them through the page.
I think this is important because a lot of us forget the power of stories to make us feel things about characters who are not like us, who have experienced things that we never will. The purpose of listening to someone else's story should not necessarily be identification, but understanding.

What baffles me with media literacy issues is that media literacy is genuinely so much fun
I love writing out my thoughts and getting to explain my perspective on things. I love considering what works and what doesn’t, and coming to a conclusion on why that is. I love appreciating the minor details of a story or a character and getting excited about them. I love talking about the things I love
And okay, sure, people absolutely don’t have to like all the things that I like, and it’s perfectly normal to come across people that have different tastes than I do. But you’re telling me you don’t even like to talk about the things you like? There’s no book, no play, no TV show, no movie, no video game, no manga, no webcomic, no nothing? You don’t have a single one that you enjoy discussing?
It’s so important that we practice media literacy, and there are some genuinely fun ways to do it, and you can bring in things you already like. You don’t have to write giant rambling essays of analysis like I sometimes do, but just… talk about it once in a while
