“My name is Antonius M. Caldwell and I am an EDUCATOR! I am the youngest of nine kids reared by the late Mr. And Mrs. Arthur Lee Caldwell Sr. I have approximately 36 nieces and nephews. I grew up in an old-school type of family. I was one that was reared to believe that success was to be achieved through hard work and an education. Initially I wanted to teach because I thought that it was my natural ability and that I could be great at it with minimal effort. After teaching for a while I started to recognize that the gift that I had was redirecting troubled Young Males of Color and motivating my teacher peers to give more effort to reaching less engaged students.
I would start my school year off introducing students to terms like critical thinking, rewards, consequences, motivation, Talented Tenth, and civil liberties. I found that teaching them unique terms and then using those terms as regular conversation words actually intrigued the students to the point where they began to seek knowledge. Then I began to use the students’ curiosity to foster an appreciation for education and a respect for authority. Through various exercises, students respect for authority is cultivated by simply exposing students to rules, laws, and clauses that directly effect or have directly affected legal outcomes of family members and friends. What they realize is that lack of knowledge increases the likelihood of failure or crisis, while access to a certain knowledge base about anything increases the chances of achieving a positive and desired outcome.
Throughout my career as an educator (teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Professor, and Program Coordinator), I have always sought out ways to cultivate the intrinsic motivation inside all students to do what is in their best interest. I now work with the future teachers and educational leaders being produced at Jackson State University as the Coordinator for Young Males of Color through the Mississippi Learning Institute and the Kellogg Foundation. I have expanded my educational goal to now include educational leadership development. Please join me each night in sending a prayer up for each individual Young Male of Color who is in search of guidance.”
