Our last anniversary event is coming up in 2 weeks. On Sunday, December 13th. Enjoy the show that will showcase the history of 130 years on Charlotte Street. Beginning the Charlotte Street School and working through to the present day. Enjoy this heart warming performance that is brought to you by Lisa Ann Ross of Solo Chicken Productions, the Next Folding Theatre Company and Anne Mitton. Presented by Priestman Street Choir and the Stepping Stones.

Our holiday open house is next Friday! Come over to the Arts Centre to enjoy the beautiful work of our artists in the building. They will have their studios open to the public, so you can see some works in progress; as well as the pieces that will be displayed in our Charlotte Glencross Gallery.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre begins its new year of exhibitions in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery with a solo exhibition by Rebecca Belliveau. The Carnaval Red opens January 23, 2015, with a vernissage from 5:30-7pm.

Rebecca Belliveau, also working under the pseudonym Aerebb, is a mixed media artist living and working in the Moncton region. She uses a combination of photographic elements, highly textured acrylic mediums and automatic writing to convey existential questions and the nature of spirituality. Belliveau obtained her BFA and pursued further courses in media arts in Montreal with renowned Canadian artist, Irene Whittome.

Belliveau explains, “The inspiration for The Carnaval Red is borne of my observations on Gnosticism, Jungian psychology, Christian doctrines and occult studies. The series is a visual meditation, not only on who we really are versus who we have created/evolved ourselves to be, but also a deeper questioning of what human nature truly is, and if it contains an opposition within. Do we find the outcome of our evolutionary changes in the world surrounding us, or should we look within ourselves for the answer to who we really are?”

The CSAC invites applications for participation in the 2015 CSAC Emerging Artist Songwriting Intensive and Showcase with THE SKYDIGGERS. The Songwriting Intensive is offered in partnership with Shivering Songs, sponsored by UP! 93.1FM, and will take place January 24th & 25th, 2015 with a showcase on the evening of the 25th. Selected participants will workshop songs-in-progress with members of The Skydiggers and peers, preparing them for performance at the showcase event. All events will take place in the CSAC Auditorium, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton. >> Application process opens December 1, 2014 and deadline to apply is JANUARY 1, 2015 by midnight. << Twelve musicians will be selected from the applications received and will be offered the opportunity to take the workshop free of charge. Entry Requirements:

Must be 16+ years of age

Must be a New Brunswick resident

Must be an 'emerging' musician -- You may have achieved some local or provincial success, and may have released self- or locally produced albums, but have yet to take that next big leap

Must be able to accompany oneself on an instrument

Must have one 'work-in-progress' piece of music to work on during the workshop

Must be able to attend all activities, including the final performance

Two new solo exhibitions open at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on Friday, November 7, 2014. Something Recognizable, an exhibition of stylized acrylic paintings by Carl Parker opens in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery, while #myhiphegemony, an exhibition of linocut prints by Penelope Stevens opens in the Penny Gallery. Both openings happen concurrently from 5:30-7pm.

Quispamsis-based artist, Carl Parker, has shown his paintings across Canada--most recently in Calgary, Alberta--as well as internationally, at the La Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea di Firenze (Florence Biennale, 2011). Something Recognizable, a collection of acrylic paintings on canvas, is Parker's second solo exhibition in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery. Parker describes his work as, "exploring the many facets of the human experience." Through his process, he describes that, "I simply allow the inspiration to take me where it wants to go in what I like to call “spontaneous flow”. My goal is to create pieces that speak to the universal aspects of human existence in a way which is simple yet complex and thought-provoking." Parker paints abstract, landscape and figure paintings with rich, impressionistic texture and a vivid colour palette - sometimes with a touch of whimsy in the subject matter.

#myhiphegemony serves as an exploration of the young female, transforming through the lens of her iPhone, into a #feminist. Fredericton artist and musician, Penelope Stevens explains, "I don't know when feminism became #cool; when our culture, through social media and popular marketing, grabbed hold of feminism in a hegemonic distortion of its true values. The #freespirits of the world, hairy armpits in full view, are suddenly raised to fashionista status, while subverting the underlying principles of equality and justice. Is it sexy to be feminist?" About her process, Stevens says, "Using my body as a model, I go through the journey myself, examining changes undergone through my #feministtransformation. I create acid wash linocut prints, a #hipartform for my #hiphegemony. As Instagram photos are easily over-shared and replicated, I over-share a personal adventure in #feminism of the body."

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre welcomes the public to join us for the opening reception of Something Recognizable: Stylized Paintings by Carl Parker in addition to #myhiphegemony by Penelope Stevens, on Friday, November 17, 2014, from 5:30-7pm. Both exhibitions run until December 9, 2014.
