Corset discourse really likes to talk in sensationalizing absolutes but historically speaking a corset is just a kind of garment. They could be uncomfortable and painful or they could be well fitted and supportive. They could be hyper-fashionable or they could be brutally practical. You could tightlace them or you could wear them with no reduction whatsoever. Most corsets were probably somewhere in the middle. Like bras. Or shoes. To say they were never perceived as restrictive or used as tools of enforcing dangerous/misogynistic beauty standards is like saying women's shoes never restrict freedom of movement. Patently untrue, but that doesn't mean those shoes have some deeper moral good or evil and it certainly doesn't mean we can use that fact to draw sweeping generalizations about the relationships of entire centuries of women to their own bodies. Corsets, like all clothing, exist in context.

clouds and how they look different throughout the day
the different colors the mornings can have. sometimes it's an orange hue and sometimes pink and sometimes it's too misty to tell
pretty color schemes in random places (the trees and your neighbors wooden patio and the color of their car)
the states of the vehicles passing you by, dents and scratches and the different trinkets suspended from their rearview mirrors
the sound of silence
the shadows the lights cast in your home, like how sunset looks different than sunrise, and the shadows the sun casts look different than those of your lamps and candles
pretty details in buildings and houses like certain types of windows or doorknobs or archways
the movement of things in the wind. flags, leaves, flowers, people's hair and coats

Recovery goes hard. It goes crazy, man. It's not like I'm cured now but this is the most ok I've ever been while not being ok. It's not like everything stopped hurting but the hurt doesn't feel like it's killing me anymore. I'm just growing around it. I stopped cutting it open every day and now it's scarring over.
Like shit, this is the happiest I've felt in months and the most stable I've been in years. So much changes when you decide enough is enough, it's like you're looking at the world through a new set of eyes. I'm more person than I ever remember being. I wish this kind of healing on every single person who needs it because damn. I'm not even living in the same reality that I was when I was miserable. I don't even have room here to be angry for the sake of being angry.
My physical body? If I didn't know better I'd swear up and down that it weighs less. Man you don't even know that the weight you're carrying is so real until you set it down. I don't hate being me anymore. I don't want to die anymore. I'm not even afraid of dying anymore because I stopped thinking that I won't make it through this. I know that I will. I know.
It finally clicked for me that I can still be in the middle of facing down the hardest shit I've ever done and not be drowning in it. I'm facing it as a new person because I finally get it. You can't fuel yourself with anger and hate, and you can't heal by trying to beat the weakness out of yourself.
