EP002 . Scam With Your Youth
Episode Summary:
Todayâs episode is brought to you solo as Paris hands you the Multipass to a world of discounts, all you have to do is scam with your youth (donât worry, itâs legal-ishđ)
Show Notes:
- Until your student loans are out of your life consider yourself a student!
- Anyone can be a student with an ID card and an email address ending in edu!
- A great location to obtain a student ID if youâre not in school is your local community college. By taking trade courses, getting a job, or even volunteering youâre usually required to get an ID in the campusâ system.Â
- Most of the time a student ID comes with an email address with the college in order to have you registered and locked into the system. An email address is another ticket into a world of discounts.Â
- When seeking out discounts just know some work will have to be put in. Most of this stuff isnât heavily advertised so if you canât find it on the site or social media platforms when in doubt just call!
- Student discounts can also apply to your monthly bills (EX. Car Insurance) Many communities (check your countyâs website) host drivers ed/courses and by having a student ID you can attend those for free or at a discounted rate! / Click HERE for more info!
- Discounts can be applied to your car insurance by informing them of your âstudent statusâ and showing them that youâve taken these driving courses that will increase your skills as a driver. All insurances have different programs but itâs worth a shot to see what they offer and then decide if a course is beneficial for you.Â
- If you public transit is your form of transportation, ask about their student discount rates ASAP! Youâll usually have to go to the office to reap these benefits and show your student Identification, etc. but itâs worth it if you can save 50¢ to a $1 on something you use daily!
- Airlines even offer discounted student rates (American Airlines only offers them for select schools HERE)Â
- If your school isnât on the list there is also a method to book your flights in a group to have a group rate applied. If youâre traveling for Spring/Winter Break grab a group of friends or even make a group on your campus Facebook to connect with people with the same travel plans.
- Typically these programs want 10+ people for the discount to be applied but that should be easy to organize a Facebook group. Here are some group options w/various airlines Group Source One  / Group Source Two (*Search your airlines of choice + group discount and youâll be able to locate more programs)
- Also for discounted airfare keep an eye on airlines with the bad press! Theyâre trying to cover that ass so theyâre going to add new programs to appeal to the people theyâve scared away AND if youâre lucky enough to get dragged off a plane your money troubles are now gone! Win-winđ
- If you're traveling for philanthropy you can also contact your airline of choice via email or social media to see if they offer discounts for âvoluntourismâ. Itâs also a good idea to cross connect an airlines charity and philanthropy they're involved with because special programs for travel could be available as well. While seeking out volunteer / Gap Year programs ALWAYS ask about their travel discounts and see what they can provide for your services.Â
Take Aways:Â
- Ask! Closed mouths donât get fed and definitely donât get a f*cking discount. So whip out that ID and see what you can get out of itđ

Show Notes:
-Â Gap Year: A year that you take off in between graduation one level or program before the transition to another one.
- It doesn't have to be a year they can range from a month, semester, etc.
- Itâs most popular between high school and college but people tend to take the year off between undergrad and grad school. Itâs also a time where you can enter various programs, travel, work, save up money, etc.
- Certain schools actually offer credits and incentives such as scholarships to take Gap Years. Academics programs also now offer opportunities that are more skill and hobby based EX: A semester at sea (more information can be found HERE)
-Â You could also work on a cruise ship to get a similar feel of a semester at sea but youâre making bank not spending it!
- Throughout her research the most interesting finding was that students who have taken a gap year have performed better academically overall, they also tend to have higher job satisfaction.
- From a financial aid standpoint, taking a few Gap Year(s) can make it easier to obtain accurate academic funding. Entering college right out of high school locks you into the role of as a dependent regardless if you receive help from your family or not. The only way to be viewed as an independent you have to be 25+ years old, have a child, be married, etc. (More information HERE)
- An alternative option is to build-up work experience before obtaining the degree
- Go Fund Me is also a great source for funding your gap year experience!Â
- You also get to avoid the dooming freshmen 15 by taking a gap year
