Nobody tagged me in one of these, and I've been horribly inactive on Tumblr & everywhere else recently, but I REALLY want to share a little bit of the summer fic that's the next installation of my slow burn series.
I'm not ready to share the title yet (still having intrusive thoughts about changing it lol) but the fic is going to be seven chapters, each of which is from the perspective of a different warbler from the series that graduates at the end of Until We Burn Out. Today, I'd love to share with you a tiny excerpt from each of the 7 chapters! I'll go in order ;)
Chapter 1: Blaine
Sebastianβs thumb taps against his knee again, then stills when Blaine slides his hand over it, threading their fingers together. Blaine squeezes once, gentle. βYouβre the smartest person I know,β he says softly. βAnd itβs obvious you care about this stuff. Maybe not the way he wants you to all the time, butβ¦β He shakes his head, lets out a quiet laugh. βI donβt know. Youβre going to be so fucking good at it.βΒ
Sebastian looks at him then, really looks at him, eyes still glassy but bright. βYeah, well. He didnβt say that part. But he did ask if I wanted him to look over my class schedule before we leave for Europe. Said he might be able to help me out with early internship applications for next summer.βΒ
Blaineβs eyebrows lift. βThatβs huge.βΒ
Sebastian shrugs again but doesnβt let go of Blaineβs hand. βHeβs probably just trying to keep me out of Ibiza next year, but yeah.βΒ
βMaybe,β Blaine says, leaning in until their foreheads brush. βMaybe he can do both. And hopefully without lecturing you at dinner.βΒ
Sebastian exhales, the corner of his mouth twitching up. He presses his nose to Blaineβs cheek, lets his eyes flutter shut for a second. βHopefully. I still want to go to yours, though. I think your dad misses me.βΒ
Chapter 2: Trent
James leans over to nudge him gently with his elbow. βYouβre staring.βΒ
βIβm not!β Trent insists, half embarrassed. James gives him a knowing look, and Trent rolls his eyes. βOkay, I am. But not like that. I mean, who isnβt?βΒ
James grins. βI had a crush on him once, too, remember?βΒ
They share a laugh, soft and private, and Trentβs hand curls loosely around Jamesβs where it rests on his wrist. Itβs strange to feel so seen and so safe all at once, like the two things arenβt mutually exclusive anymore.Β
βI think it was envy a little bit, too,β Trent explains while they walk. βHeβs so, like, embraced by everyone. He makes it look easy.βΒ
βSo do you sometimes,β James replies.Β
Trent scoffs. βNothing about anything in my life ever feels easy.βΒ
James hums. βProbably doesnβt feel easy for Blaine either.βΒ
βI heard my name,β Blaine interrupts, wrapping one around Trentβs shoulders even though he has to reach up to do so. He has glitter smudged on one cheek and a bead of sweat running down his temple, but he looks like heβs never been more at home.Β
βYou look like youβre having fun,β James says, probably to avoid explaining what they were really talking about.Β
Blaine grins. βDid you see theyβre doing drag karaoke at Scandals tonight?βΒ
βOh, so weβre going, right?β Trent asks, and Blaineβs already nodding before heβs finished speaking. He wanders back toward Sebastian, still radiant with joy.Β
Trent squeezes Jamesβs hand, and James squeezes back. βHe is kinda magical. The power to make anyone within a mile fall madly in love with him.βΒ
James laughs. βAll the Warblers are like that though. Like celebrities. You all have that same magic. I just like your magic the best out of all of them.βΒ
Chapter 3: Nick
βMy parents want to come with to move me into school, and Iβm scared theyβll do something to embarrass me that will ruin any chance I have of making friends,β Jeff says passively, one hand in the popcorn and brushing against Nickβs while the other holds the grape soda.Β
Nick swallows, even though he doesnβt have any popcorn or soda in his mouth. βWhen are you moving in?βΒ
βAugust 24th,β Jeff replies. He doesnβt even seem scared or nervous or like heβs dreading it, not like Nick who has to immediately find something to distract him every time he thinks of school next year. βMy roommate is moving in the day before me for some program he got into. I was hoping Iβd avoid my parents meeting him.βΒ
Nick nearly chokes on his own saliva. It never occurred to him that Jeff would have a new roommate. Sure, he knew Jeff would be at Princeton next year without him, but he never let himself wonder what it would be like, who he would live with and whether heβd be friends with him. Nick and Jeff have been roommates since they were fourteen; Nick literally cannot imagine living with anyone else, even though heβs making plans to dorm with Meatbox. He shouldβve known Jeff would be making plans of his own.Β
βHave you talked to your roommate?β Nick asks, even though heβs not sure he wants to know the answer.Β
βA little bit. Had to figure out whoβs bringing the microwave and mini fridge and stuff.βΒ
Nick hates this. He hates this so much. He hates this more than watching Jeff make out with Sebastian at New Yearβs. He hates this more than church with his family. He hates this more than heβs sure heβll hate dorming with Meatbox.Β
Next year, Jeff is going to be eating in the dining hall with someone else. Heβs going to be walking to class with someone else. Heβs going to be talking until morning with someone else. Heβs going to have a new best friend, someone smart who got into Princeton.Β
βAre you okay?β Jeff asks, snapping Nick out of a daze he didnβt realize he was in.Β
Nick shakes it off. βIs there more popcorn?βΒ
Jeff stares at him, but Nick doesnβt stare back. Instead, he reaches for the popcorn bucket and pulls it closer, grabbing a handful and stuffing it into his mouth. Jeff snorts out a laugh, and Jeff smiles, and Nick prays he never brings up this new best friend again.Β
Chapter 4: Ethan
They end up in the kitchen, Emma pouring vodka into a cup, then adding lemonade to the top. Ethan doesnβt even know why he came back here with her; he definitely canβt have any more to drink before heβs in charge of the fireworks display.
She slides the bottle back into the freezer and leans her hip against the counter, taking a slow sip. βAll little siblings are assholes. I know this because I am one.βΒ
Ethan snorts. βYou do not act like that with Caroline.βΒ
βSure I do.β She tips her head, studying him over the rim of her cup. βJust not in front of other people.βΒ
He shrugs, grabbing a water from the fridge and twisting the cap off. He doesnβt say anything, just focuses on the sound of fireworks cracking faintly somewhere elsewhere on the lake, early and impatient.Β
Emma watches him drink, then says, almost offhand, βYou and Jeffβs sister look pretty cozy.βΒ
Ethan chokes a little on the water. βWhat?βΒ
She laughs, holding up a hand. βI donβt mean it any sort of way. Justβ¦β She gestures vaguely, like sheβs describing a vibe more than a fact. βItβs a look. Very All-American. Golden boy, girl-next-door. Ken and Little Miss Malibu Barbie, fresh out of the box.βΒ
Ethan frowns. βWhatβs that supposed to mean?βΒ
Chapter 5: Meatbox
Meatbox swallows, the thought landing heavier than he expects. He nods again, simpler this time. βYouβll be back next summer, right?β
She hums and takes a sip from her drink, then sets it down next to her sandwich. βI donβt know. Depends on internships, I guess. Most of the students in the honors program Iβm in end up with summer internships right away.βΒ
Meatbox feels a slight hitch in his chest, the kind of subtle ache that usually only comes from a hard tackle or a long conditioning run. He focuses on the Ohio State logo between them, the bright red fabric a stark contrast to the green of the meadow.Β
βInternships,β he repeats, the word tasting like dry cardboard. βRight. Big brain stuff.βΒ
Hattie notices the shift in his voice. She turns fully toward him, pulling one knee up to her chest. βItβs not like Iβm trying to get away. Itβs just how the program works. If I want to get into the journalism track I want, I have to keep the momentum up.βΒ
βI get it,β he says, and he actually does. Heβs always known sheβd leave at the end of the summer, and that maybe sheβd never come back. He reaches into the bag of chips, the plastic crinkling sharply in the quiet air. βJust seems like a long time to go without a decent picnic.βΒ
Chapter 6: Jeff
βHi,β Jeff says, and his voice cracks immediately, betraying him.Β
βHey,β Nick replies, softer than usual, like heβs already clocked it. βAre youββΒ
βIβm fine,β Jeff lies, wiping at his eyes even though thereβs no one to see him. βWhatβs up?βΒ
Thereβs a beat. Jeff can hear background noise on Nickβs endβsomething clanking, maybe a drawer, Meatbox swearing faintly in the distance. Jeff checks the time again. Itβs almost one in the morning.Β
βSo,β Nick starts, dragging the word out. βHypothetical question.βΒ
Jeff snorts wetly. βI love hypotheticals.βΒ
βIf,β Nick says carefully, βsomeone were moving into a new dorm in, say, four days. And that someoneβs parents were going to be out of town on a last-minute business trip. And that someoneβs best friendβwho is also, hypothetically, his boyfriendβwere very far awayβ¦βΒ
Jeff closes his eyes.Β
ββ¦Would it be insane,β Nick finishes, ββ¦to ask that person to come back and help? Because otherwise itβs going to be a complete disaster. Like. A real, actual mess. Meatbox thinks we should just figure it out as we go, which Iβm totally down for, except that we havenβt bought any of the shit we need and have bought three things we donβt.βΒ
Jeff laughs. It slips out of him before he can stop it, thin and watery and a little hysterical. And then heβs laughing harder, shoulders shaking, tears spilling down his face.Β
βOh my god,β Nick says immediately. βI didnβt mean toββΒ
βNo,β Jeff manages, breathless. βNo, itβsβ¦sorry. Iβm not laughing at you. I justβ¦β He wipes his face with the heel of his hand. βYou sound so stressed.βΒ
βI am stressed,β Nick admits. βI tried to make a list and then I lost the list. And then I remembered how organized you always were with packing and stuff, and I was like,Β oh.Β Right. Jeff has his shit together.βΒ
Jeff glances around the room at the stack of packed and repacked boxes. βWhen is move-in?βΒ
βTuesday,β Nick says. βI know itβs short notice. And I know youβre doingβ¦like, smart people, Princeton stuff. And obviously you canβt come. But I really wish you could justββΒ
βIβll come,β Jeff says immediately.Β
Nick goes quiet.Β
βIβll come,β Jeff repeats, steadier now, even though he barely believes his own words. βIβll help you move in. Iβll boss you around. Iβll make sure you donβt forget sheets or whatever other dumb thing youβd absolutely forget.βΒ
Chapter 7: Sebastian
βAre you okay?β Sebastian asks under his breath. He barely hears his own words.Β
Blaine hesitates, and Sebastian swallows back something. He canβt tell if itβs vomit or a sob. βAre you?βΒ
Sebastian doesnβt reply. βIβm sorry. I didnβt mean toβ¦βΒ
He has no idea what heβs trying to say. He doesnβt know how to finish that sentence. What exactly did he do? Which part of it didnβt he mean?Β
Blaine takes a long, shaky breath, and Sebastian leans his head back, staring at the ceiling in contemplation and wishing he had something he could stab himself wish.Β
βIβm open to, likeβ¦trying thingsβ¦βΒ
Sebastian swallows as his heart sinks in his chest. βBββΒ
βBut I donβt know, donβt you think we shouldβ¦donβt you think there are things we should talk about first?βΒ Β
Sebastian closes his eyes, the pressure behind them intensifying. He understands. Blaine isnβt hurt by the fact that Sebastian went for something rougher, something more controlling; heβs hurt by the fact that Sebastian didnβtΒ ask. That he used Blaine as a vehicle for his own panic instead of a partner.Β
βYes,β Sebastian manages, his voice thick and rough. The single word is an admission of guilt, of error, and of sudden, terrifying clarity. βYes, we should have.βΒ
He turns his head slowly, finding Blaineβs profile in the dim light. Blaine is staring straight ahead, his expression unreadable, his jaw clenched just slightly.Β
βIβm sorry,β he says again, forcing the words out. They are inadequate, pitiful, but they are all he has.Β
Blaine finally turns, meeting Sebastianβs gaze. The hurt is still there, deep in his brown eyes, but itβs tempered with a profound exhaustion.Β
that's all for now !! hope you enjoyed this little (I mean huge lmao) preview of the summer era!
