the essence of johnlock is that the watson character has settled sustainably, tho unhappily, into heteronormative life when he meets the holmes character, while the holmes character has entirely rejected the task trying to pass as heterosexual/normatively masculine/neurotypical, so in a certain sense heās freer than the watson but in another sense heās even more isolated and lonely bc his abnormality makes him a social outcast. & then over the course of their relationship watson becomes more comfortable w himself and holmes becomes more emotionally open and less isolated. itās like they have to be Freed from the two contrasting pitfalls that queer people trying to survive in normative society often fall into & the key to both of their escapes is each other

"Mary, bless her, had rightly guessed where I had been and with whom. Yet she had no more than to accuse me of marrying her under the false pretense that while all the world believed she held my heart, in reality, it belonged to Holmes."

Lestradeās flub, ādonāt commit suicideā, is a humourous way to show how out of his depth he is in his investigation. Ā He, himself, is so confused by his own case that he says this absurd, facile thing to the press. Ā We can see how inappropriate this is by the reactions of the woman asking the question and by Donovanās reaction.
I do think, though, that thereās a message here beyond the context. Ā I think, ādonāt commit suicideā, it is the theme of this episode. Ā Both our main characters are shown on the edge of killing themselves, with no reason to live, lonely and considering ending their lives via a gun and a dangerous game with a serial killer.
I believe that all of the victims on the show are queer and aiding to make some commentary on the lives of queer people in general and of our protagonists, specifically. Ā
Lestrade is representative of Sherlockās work. Ā We can see in the formerās introductory scene that Sherlock, despite his being an outsider, considers himself part of Lestradeās team. Ā This is why he can say, āwrong!ā, to Lestradeās assertion that he has, āour best peopleā, on the case. Ā Sherlock considers himself, āLestradeās bestā. Ā Sherlockās work is just barely tethering him to his life and when he says that heās married to his work, at Angeloās, I think, in part, heās admitting that workās about all he can handle in his life. Ā Sherlock and John are both treading water when they first meet, itās just more obviously depicted in Johnās case.
The thing that saves them is not just becoming flatmates. Ā Mike Stamford only nudges them in the right direction, it takes Lestrade to, indirectly, push Sherlock and John the rest of the way. Ā Lestrade comes over, Sherlock leaves without John and things are no better than before. Ā But, when he comes back and John goes on a case with him, their lives together begin. Ā Lestrade, representing, āthe workā, is the thing that will bond them and keep them from killing themselves. Ā Their work partnership is what saves them as it allows them a format in which to become friends.
As domestically intimate as theyād become in Series 2, they could not have become that close if they lead separate lives. Ā It is the cases that allow them to bond so intensely.
Lestrade tells all of us to not kill ourselves. Ā He tells the characters of the show, too. Ā But, most importantly he tells Sherlock and John. Ā And he, through his initial and continued employment of them, is the one who saves them from this fate. Ā Ā
YAH. Also in The Sherlock Chronicles thereās a mention of a deleted scene taking place on a rooftop where Sherlock looks over the edge and tells Lestrade that there are not suicides because the victims killed themselves in random places, no emotional baggage to this choice and adds āThis is not how I would do itā and Lestrade then says āā¦So how have you been these days?ā. This really stuck with me. I wish they kept that.
