The Wooly Griffon or muryfum ljäljëzhal (“wooly lion-creature”) in Dhënuvgöm is a species of herbivorous avian wyvernid belonging to the Griffon Classification (non-hoofed quadrupedal avian wyvernids ) which inhabits the mountain ranges of the northern continent of Atterra.
Wooly Griffons live in female centric herds with orbiting males similar to Earth's sheep. Like sheep, if a person were to bend over or lower your head while facing one, then they may take that as a challenge and ram in a downward motion with their crest. While Males have larger crests than females, being rammed by either gender will hurt and while it may not break a bone, can certainly leave some deep bruising.
Each herd is lead by oldest female griffon with the most children, and matriarchs are known to begin a "call out" when it is time to move the herd. These "call outs" begin with the matriarch and is then responded too once by one by the other female griffons in the heard. The sequence of the responding females calls corresponds to the rank each female is within the herd hierarchy. Everyday the matriarch initiates the call three times a day, once in the morning, then once at noon, and once at night.
During mating season male griffons will move closer to the herd and will compete for the attention of high ranking females by ramming or 'whacking' each other with their crests until ones gives up. The most dominant males will be the ones with the greatest chance of mating with the most females during that particular breeding season. Once the breeding season is over then the males will resume orbiting the herd and act as sentinels to warn the herd of danger.
Wooly Griffons were first domesticated by Hakdor tribes living in the mountains and were bred for their colorful back wool which is shaved and used to make clothing and blankets like the sheep and llamas of Earth. Now they are a common site within human territories as well are bread to have a variety of wool colors to suit different styles of clothing with minimal need to dye them.
