Gordy got shot at PRECISELY the right moment to spare Jupe.
During their staredown, Jupe never had direct eye contact with Gordy.
As Gordy goes to him, yes, they might be looking at one another. And there's still aggression left in Gordy. But he gets close enough to have the tablecloth obscure their view of one another. That's when he changes.
That's when Gordy seems to come to his senses. It's quiet, nobody is running around or looking at him directly. He seems confused about what happened.
Then they move to do a fistbump. And Gordy lifts the tablecloth, letting their eyes meet again. His eyes dart over Jupe, then he is shot.
Now, in the context of the film, JJ usually only shows aggression when she is being looked at directly. Maybe Gordy was similar in that sense. Maybe this mere eye contact would have been enough to make him wreak havoc again.
This thin piece of fabric saved Jupe. Not some "special connection", just pure dumb luck.
I finally saw Nope. No spoilers, but I was SO HAPPY when I saw this homage to the Akira slide!
Great movie.
It’s a balloon, the same thing that turned Gordy into a monster, that is used to put an end to Jean Jacket
i don’t dress for the male gaze i dress for the female gays
NOPE SPOILERS
Still can't stop thinking about the scene where he talks about the SNL sketch. How he had to see the most traumatizing thing in his life turned into a joke by white actors. And he had to laugh it off.
How Hollywood turned him from the exploited into the exploiter, so when he stood toe to to with the animal again, this time he was the same as the showrunners who's carelessness caused his trauma to begin with.
Similarly, OJ's trauma over his father's death was underplayed by the Hollywood execs at the shoot. None of them had any compassion for him. But he stayed true to himself the whole movie.
In conclusion I LOVE DRAMATIC FOILS I LOVE THEM I LOVE THEM

there's a thing in Nope i kinda wanna talk about cause i don't see it discussed enough. kinda spoilers i guess but not really part of the "main" plot. gonna slap it under a read more anyways, but it's about the Gordy's Home thing.
I find it very fascinating the in-universe response to the whole incident. Like people were killed and maimed and/or horribly traumatized and it's just...laughed at and treated as a joke. A Mad Magazine cover parodies it and SNL makes fun of it (with Yeun's character portrayed by a white dude for extra insult).
The whole thing was devastating and it's...just a joke to everyone that wasn't involved. He clearly hasn't properly dealt with it and represses it so much that it manages to manifest subconsciously with the design of the aliens in his park. He tries to play it off but you can tell the whole thing haunts him to this day and there's no escape.
idk it just fits the themes so well of spectacle and the way those unaffected treat horrible events.
she is so pretty
Nope (2022) is such a brilliant movie in so many ways. It’s about the inherent evil of spectacle. It’s about Hollywood’s abuse of animals. It’s about stealing and erasing black history. It’s about how personification is ultimately a bad thing. It’s about trauma. It’s about the never ending cycle of abuse that comes from exploitation. It’s about predator and prey. It’s about looking up to the heavens in awe. It’s about averting your gaze lest you be punished. It’s about respecting animals. It’s about the way poc are treated in media. It’s about how far some people will go for money. It’s an alien movie but it’s a monster movie but it’s a western but it’s a si-fi and it’s the best movie I’ve ever seen.
We are being surveilled by an alien species I call 'The Viewers'

no mourners, no funerals. Among them, it passed for ‘good luck.’

i’m so proud to see that every piece of sapphic media is better and more validating than the last. a league of their own showed the pain of being queer in the 40s and how hard it was to hide. but they didn’t make it the whole story, they still showed the joy and the fight to be together, not just the misery. they still showed greta and carson being accepted by their community, things we didn’t get to see with shows like stranger things. sure we get to see them accepted by peers, but no people that truly get it. the show was also made by queer people for queer people and wasn’t seen through the male gaze or fetishized at all. we also bet to see black queer relationships in the 40s which is huge.
with first kill, we see a relationship that isn’t all about coming out and the struggle of being queer. the problem outsiders had with their relationship wasn’t that they were both women or that one was a black woman, it was that they were dating their sworn enemy.
with the wilds, we got to see queer relationships and relationships between young girls evolve and develop during difficult times. it really harped on the concept of girl power and female relationships. it focused on girls being themselves and having safe spaces to discover who they are.
with killing eve, we got to see the dark side of ourselves being explored and once again, the problem people have isn’t that eve is dating another woman, it’s that she’s dating a psychopath and murderer.
with the haunting of bly manor, the queer relationship isn’t questioned, they’re too busy fighting ghosts. it’s a relationship not shown through the male gaze or fetishized at all.
it’s so nice to know that queer media doesn’t stop at shows like atypical or movies like portrait of a lady on fire. while yes, they are good pieces of media, there are so many new things out that more holistically represent the sapphic experience. it’s refreshing to be able to see yourself on screen when it was never an option before. this is why people are so upset about cancellations, our validation and representation is being taken away. it fucking sucks and you can’t fully grasp that until you have experienced it.
i could talk about this stuff for hours on end but this is really my only outlet. this is the only place people really understand, where people have absorbed the media i have absorbed and those people are just as obsessed as i am. it feels good to have a community of people that understand and want to relate to me.
“You want anything?”
