"Why are we doing this again?"
There's a long sigh from Mae's left, the only sign that the older man has heard Teddy's question. She fights against a grin, instead looking down and at Stoker. The lizard is lazily keeping pace with them, his tongue flicking out in such a way that mirrors Franken's sigh, and that just makes it harder for Mae to contain her grin.
"For multiple reasons we've already talked about," Franken drones, a slight edge to his voice. Before, Mae would be worried about pissing off the scowling man, but after weeks of being stuck with him, she's tentatively hopeful that he's not as big of an asshole as the other men at the paper back in the States. Is he still an asshole? Yes, but at least he leaves her and Teddy alone most of the time.
"I just — isn't it going to be awkward? Just showing up? Won't we be intruding?"
Franken sighs again, this time reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Christ, Stolarz — this is our job. We show up, we take photographs of the Infantry and the war. If you're worried about intruding, you picked the wrong line of work. Just…don't act like an idiot, and you'll be fine. Probably."
Mae snorts. Teddy glares at her through his thick lenses.
"Don't—"
"I didn't even say anything—!"
"But you were thinking it!"
Mae snickers. "Just try not to trip in front of all the soldiers, okay?"
"Oh, that's real funny, I hope you fall face first into the mud in front of your loverboy—"
Mae's elbow digs into Teddy's side too late to cut off the last word, and she scowls at him, pissed. He blinks owlishly through his glasses and then the realization crosses his face just as Franken slows his pace, heavy gaze boring into the side of Mae's head. She cringes, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply, cursing Teddy and his mouth.
"Well, uh—I was just—"
"He's just being an idiot, Franken—"
The older photographer holds up a hand to silence them. A muscle jumps in Mae's jaw. They've fully stopped now, both Nova and Stoker restless around their feet, and there's a soft whoosh as Juniper lands on a nearby fence post.
"I don't care about what you do in your own time," Franken starts, those dark eyes of his drilling into Mae, her back prickling. "I don't want to know."
"Teddy's just—I just met an old friend, that's it—"
"Oh, I've had plenty of old friends," Franken interrupts, sarcasm dripping from his words, and Mae bristles. "I just said I don't want to know. Just remember, Sullivan — you're here to do a job. Not everyone gets a chance like this, so if you want to throw it all away fooling around with some guy who probably won't even make it off the beach when we invade, that's your decision."
Franken turns and resumes walking without another word. Mae's temper flares, her back straightening and shoulders rearing back, and the only thing that stops her from snapping back is Teddy's hand on her elbow, his anxiety radiating from him. Some guy who probably won't even make it off the beach — what the fuck is this guy's problem? What does he even know? And where the hell is his tact? Any semblance of neutrality that's been forming toward the grizzled photographer fizzles and dies in an instant. He really is just another asshole.
"Sorry, Mae," Teddy whispers, and he does sound genuinely remorseful. Mae shrugs off his hand and gives him a tight smile.
"Don't worry about it," she replies, and she nudges him with her shoulder to show there's no hard feelings. Teddy'll probably be overthinking this slip-up for days, if not weeks. He does loosen up a bit at the shoulder nudge, and then Franken is barking at them to hurry up. Mae rolls her eyes, muttering a curse under her breath as she and Teddy trail after Franken. Juniper clacks her beak and takes flight once more, soaring up high into the dreary English sky, and Nova bleats quietly, pressing closer to Teddy, most likely sensing his distress. As they walk along the dirt road, Mae just stews silently, and the longer they walk, the more her anger fades, though Franken's words are still on a loop through her mind.
Mae's not an idiot. She knows that within the next few weeks, maybe even sooner, the Allies are going to be launching the mother of all invasions to start pushing the Nazis out of France. She knows people are going to die — a lot of people. And she's not naive enough to actually believe that anyone she's close with is somehow immune to dying simply because she knows them. Christ, for the past two years she's been living with that thrum of anxiety and worry, with Gordon deploying right after Pearl Harbor.
But she had been so swept up in finding Robbie again, she hadn't had time to really process the fact that he is here. That he is going to be one of those thousands of soldiers invading France. That he could…
No.
She's not going to think about it. Not going to worry about it. Especially not now, when there's no reason to get all worked up. Robbie is fine. He's not in any danger yet. She'll deal with that when it's time to. As for right now, Franken's right, as much as she doesn't want to admit it. She has to focus on her job, and that's what she'll do.
I'll never stop hyping up other people OC's because what do you mean you created this thing out of the love of the game and gave life not just to them, but the other characters around them
Please keep bringing up the whimsy in my timeline I will literally snort it like a line of coke

Please don’t let fandom ruin something you love. Walk away and unfollow the fans and enjoy the thing by yourself, or find a limited circle of people who ignore the discourse, or get your irl friends into the thing and collectively ignore the Internet community, or blacklist from here to the moon if you need to and only ever scroll through your rarepair ship’s tag on AO3. But don’t let fandom distort a show or a movie or a book or a comic you used to love so badly that you can’t enjoy the original anymore. Please. It isn’t worth it.
they should invent a high ponytail that doesn’t give me a headache and they should invent a low ponytail that doesn’t make me look like a miller’s apprentice going off to enlist in the continental army
something I’ve noticed in fandoms lately is a lack of… object permanence? perspective? Just reacting to each episode/chapter of something as if it’s final & whatever plot line they dislike is the status quo forever? like…… have a tiny bit of patience
I kinda understand because a lot of franchises lately have ended in shoddy and poorly thought out ways, but tbh either have some faith in your fav show or just write fanfic

Guy who never feels like his problems are “bad enough” to be taken seriously: what if I hurt the character so horrifically that everyone around them could not possibly deny the severity of their pain even if the character themself tries to downplay it.
The first rule of fandom is have fun. The second rule of fandom is find an enabler and become an enabler. Yes you should write that fic. What if it was even hornier? What if it was angstier? What if you wrote it just for me?
huge fan of when characters love each other and are closely bonded in an explicitly nonromantic way. however ☝️ i am very much not a huge fan of what happens when characters like this are introduced to fandom
The first night Nikki goes to Bear's home, and then when she goes to "apologize" to him... he is worried about if he took advantage of her. But this worry is not if Nikki is okay. The worry is if he is being a Good Person. The first night they kiss he says "you were acting like you didn't like what was happening" and then the next day he insist he was not taking advantage of her. Because she was the one who wanted this, she said so! Clearly something was Wrong with her, but he did not take advantage of her. That is what matters to him. What he wants reassurance for. That He Is Okay and he never did anything wrong. It doesn't matter if Nikki is okay, it only matters that she is okay with this, not if she needs to talk or needs help with something. Or if she is hurt. She says that she took some molly and that's it. Is not On Him. The first and most important priority is always that he doesn't get rejected by the person he wants. Not her own well being.

the thing about obsession re: the cat sandwich, is that the common interpretation I've been seeing is that its an instance of real Nikki's anger manifesting through the entity, but honestly I saw it more as an instance of the entity not understanding human conventions, and having a "cannibalism/consumption as a metaphor for love" moment. Like I genuinely could imagine the entity's thought process as:
Bear loves the cat -> consumption is one of the ultimate acts of love. by eating the cat, its essence lives inside him. -> he will love me for this wonderful gift I've given him :)
it sort of reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are, when the monsters beg the protagonist to stay with them. Please don't go. I'll eat you whole. I love you so.
the fact bear only tried to cancel his wish after being told he couldn’t alter it (and, seemingly, because he was uncertain about how real nikki’s love actually was) - instead of wanting to do that from the start, as soon as it was clear that something was wrong with nikki - makes me so, so devastated for her. it’s clear he was more concerned with what he was getting out of the wish, rather than the detrimental effect it was having. and like, everyone could tell something was up with nikki, it’s not as if it wasn’t clear. him hanging up the phone as soon as nikki is out on the line (screaming) is so symbolic of how he is completely ignoring how he is ruining her life throughout the film
