Maybe they're working construction together for a few months. Eddie's quiet because he's still in the thick of Shannon leaving and learning how to be a dad and dealing with his parents. And Buck isn't quiet because he's just kind of vibing but he's so fucking lost. But they gravitate toward each other and become fast friends since they're the two newest guys on the crew and their around the same age.

Then one morning Eddie catches that Buck living out of his car and he's like "Hey buddy, are you good?" and Buck's like "Oh yeah I'm great, I just live out of my Jeep because it's easier to head on to the next place." and Eddie's like "So you're homeless?" and Buck's like "Only technically?" And Eddie knows rock bottom because he's currently living there and he's like "How would you like to make that not at all."
