kara is 17 and learning how to be human. she’s starting to speak english, struggling to cope with the constant overstimulation, and realizing quickly that she isn’t allowed to show how uncomfortable she is if she wants to blend in
she is the angriest she’s ever been; living with fire in her blood that she can’t put out (doesn’t want to put out) and yet she’s somehow constantly numb. it’s the most terrible contrast and kara is miserable — trapped right in the center of it.
somehow, she ends up meeting lena. kara doesn’t want to befriend her — she doesn’t need friends here — this isn’t her home, and she doesn’t need another person to pretend with. but without even meaning to, lena pulls her in.
she’s sarcastic and witty and the first person who doesn’t bore kara half to death because she’s smart and admittedly, kara appreciates her cynicism. they exchange numbers and start to text and kara finds out that lena doesn’t seem to have any friends either. kara doesn’t understand why, but also has too much going on to care about what lena’s social life looks like outside of her
a few weeks go by and when kara gets sick of clark badgering her about “finding her people” — she finally snaps: “i already have a friend! can you chill the fuck out now?”
only, this just makes makes things worse because clark is getting excited and excitement means questions.
what’s her name? how did you meet? do you want to invite her over?
kara gives a half-assed ramble about how her name is lena luthor, she’s 16, and she lives just outside the city. she hopes it’ll be enough to pacify him only now, clark’s demeanor is changing and he’s very seriously telling kara that she can never see this girl again
kara scoffs — unable to believe what she’s hearing
“you know you’re not my dad, right? you don’t get to control what i do.”
so clark tells her about lex luthor and how that family is dangerous. they want kryptonian’s dead.
the words twist in kara’s gut as she hears them — physical sensation returning to her body for the first time since she landed.
maybe it’s morbid curiosity, maybe it’s a desire for revenge, maybe it’s the hope that lena will remind her what pain beyond grief truly feels like — kara isn’t sure. all she knows is: she needs to see lena again
