Obsessed with characters who are chronic oversharers but in a way that conceals any real information about themselves. Characters who talk about everything but leave out everything that actually has meaning to them, who use their oversharing to hide all the things they're not talking about.
Watching an interview Chris Perfetti (Jacob’s actor) and he said Caleb can make Jacob into the “straight man” of a scene because he’s often more unhinged than Jacob and it made me wonder if Jacob comes from a deeply unhinged family and he’s the most normal of them all.
(via: @nympharmacy)
Love this theory and I can see it 100%. For a long time I’ve had the theory his parents (or at least one of them) is a semi-functioning alcoholic. I think this is inline with the idea of them as latchkey kids— maybe dad is at a bar or mom is out at a neighbor’s drinking. Maybe they get too drunk to cook or take care of the boys. I just have a lot of thoughts on this idea of Jacob being the “responsible one” and how that reflects on his family dynamic (and I appreciate you picked up what I’m putting down!! Ugh just the idea of him making Caleb an after school snack, maybe helping him with his homework… oh god it’s so cute. I want to draw it. Just adorable!!!)
I think this version you’re suggesting would be the most realistic version of Jacob’s parents I can imagine. I really go back and forth on, were they actually abusive? Or does Jacob just feel alienated from them, thus his minimal contact (no mention of mom on Mother’s Day when everyone else is talking about it, not even suggesting going home for Christmas, not having seen Caleb for three years).
I could see them being (as opposed to alcoholics) two people who deeply dislike each other and project unrealized desires on to their children and expect Jacob and Caleb to be a certain way (evidence being Jacob saying Caleb is “everything his parents ever wanted,” implying 1. His parents have expectations for him and Caleb, and 2. These expectations are clear). Probably live in a cookie cutter, white neighborhood inside the city of Albany or a suburb in the greater capital region. A mom who cares for her appearance and a dad who cares for his job title. Probably works a white collar job or owns a business like a refrigerator repair place or tax firm or something. Not superbly rich (Jacob has loans, after all, though they could just have refused to pay) but not remotely poor. Stuck in a loveless marriage due to perceived societal pressure, probably from their own families. Fake liberals who are disturbed but tolerant of homosexuality, yet confused by Jacob not subscribing to heterosexual gender roles. Maybe they both pay more attention to work than their home lives, leaving any attention they have left over for Caleb, who they just get along with easier. They don’t put in effort for Jacob. But they aren’t good parents to either: Caleb maybe being spoiled, constantly praised, and easily let off the hook… all leading to his immaturity. Jacob being tolerated, avoided, chastised… leading to his clingy, neurotic nature, yet the natural manner of authority he steps into with Caleb and while teaching.
Hehe.. I’m getting ahead of myself! I could go on and on. I’m just so curious. Chris Perfetti said recently that Quinta is still looking for “who Jacob’s parents are.” Not actors so much as literally the characters. So they aren’t defined yet. I know Perfetti himself has an idea of who they are but obviously he won’t share that. I’m curious though.
I am also curious about your thoughts on how his nicotine addiction relates to this :) clearly I have a few ideas of my own, but I’m interested in your opinion.
Barbara Howards the type of teacher to complain when a student sprays perfume
Gregory eddies the type of teacher to say “this isn’t a beauty salon”
Melissa schemmenti is the type of teacher to toss a snack when you get a question right
Ava Coleman is the type of principal that joins counseling sessions just to get the drama
Janine Teagues is the type of teacher to say “happy Friyay” (i can’t remember if she’s actually done that or not)
Jacob hill is the type of teacher to include himself in your conversation
