I DID IT.
Doc let out a breath, placing the roll of gauze and other medical supplies in his kit. As he stood up his back cracked audibly, and he took one more set of vitals before turning to leave. Just as he was about to move from the side of the bed, however, a hand caught his wrist weakly. Doc jumped slightly, and turned to see Jason staring up at him with his good eye. He had been unconscious (more like sedated) for the past two days, and the right side of his face and neck were wrapped in thick layers of gauze and medical tape. Doc had managed to stop the bleeding to a slow, thick trickle, and once they had gotten to one of the safe houses, he had actually been able to see the damage. It wasn’t pretty. There were third degree burns along the right side of his face and his neck, spreading down and covering part of his shoulders as well. Doc new as soon as he got a look at his eye that there was little to no chance of it being functional again. He had been changing the bandages and cleaning the wounds regularly to avoid infection, and the team had taken turns watching him. Now, with Jason staring up at him with his remaining eye, face drawn in discomfort (but not outright pain. The med we’re working it looks like, than God), it struck Doc how…young…he seemed. “D-don-n’t—” Jason started, then broke off in a fit of coughing. The fireball had caused some temporary damage to Jason’s nose and mouth as well, so talking was a difficult task. Doc quickly knelt back down and placed a firm hand on Jason’s uninjured shoulder. “Woah there. You need to rest, buddy.” Jason struggled weakly against his hand for a moment before letting out a small gasp and finally stopped, as he had pulled the burned skin on his neck and shoulders. He looked at Doc with a mix of concern, confusion, and barely suppressed panic, and it took Doc a moment before realizing why. “Normie and the others are fine,” Doc reassured quickly. “They got out relatively unscathed, and they’re in the main room.” Jason relaxed, but there was still a question in his eyes. Doc sighed, “No, they can’t come in yet. You’ve been out for the past two days days and your body is fucked up as hell. I don’t want to add anymore stress to it until you’ve healed a bit.” Jason’s face fell ever so slightly, and Doc felt something in his chest tighten. “I can stay,” he blurted. “If you like.” Jason looked at the wall for a moment before nodding slightly. Doc sat back on the stool and looked through his bag, pulling out a book about some author who gets in a crash and is ‘rescued’ by his ‘#1 fan’ only to realize she’s not as ok as she seems and opening it. He sat there until Jason dosed off, then took another set of vitals. As he was about to leave the room, he paused, and took off a thin, silver necklace with a dragon on the end his grandmother had given him and placed it on the bedside table. “Watch him for me, Oma,” he breathed, closing the door.
(Oma is German for grandma and I feel like these fucker are multilingual. Also kudos to anyone who gets the vague reference to a random book I put in there (it’s just for the funnies, it’s not to be taken to seriously))
