People say vegan advocacy is too aggressive, then get defensive over the softest meat reduction message imaginable. The problem is not always the tone. Sometimes the problem is being asked to question animal use at all.
I love how the manga translated Steve's hurt so well..😭 My baby was just hurt and tired of being abandoned. The one boy who he loved the most doing it broke him to pieces and he was never able to let go. It became his obsession. Darren was his obsession.
Steve's obsession with Darren is heavily tied to the idea that Darren is the person who defined his life. Darren is the one person Steve feels connected to, betrayed by, and unable to let go of.
The tragedy of Steve and Darren is that Darren's transformation into a half-vampire fundamentally changes everything. Their old friendship becomes something Steve can't return to, and he keeps trying to force Darren back into the narrative he believes.
Steve's love/protection is twisted. He doesn't just want Darren safe; he wants Darren on his side. Steve's attachment to Darren isn't healthy. He doesn't just want Darren to love him--he wants Darren to be unable to exist without him. That is very much the tragedy of their dynamic. Steve isn't really Darren's protector. He's more the person Darren needs protection from.
fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d
I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty
I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.
Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.
When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.
Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.
See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.
So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:
Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.
IDs: two replies to the post.
The first, from ParteeHardy, says, “how did the mail carrier know you sent hate mail? Were the vibes that rancid?”
The second, a reply from OP TodaysBird, says, “some of the envelopes had writing on the outside along the lines of ‘I hate you.’”
End IDs.
Let’s climb on and chew and get chomped by mama
Me, seeing the first frame of this video: Oh, mama's at the end of her rope. :')

Does Tumblr know that Eoin Macken, Rupert Young, and Tom Hopper did a Merlin-themed photoshoot for Gay Times magazine?

I just did this trend for The Monstrumologist, and i couldn't help myself but do it for Darren as well ☕️
Any genuinely empathetic person is vegan or open to veganism. To argue otherwise is foolish at best. Genuine empathy opens our hearts to all beings and it’s beautiful when compassion expands like that. Ultimately, however, everyone walks their own path, at their own pace, carrying their own wounds and awakenings. But once you see it, truly see it and get it, you won't be able to ever unsee.
Steve gives off this very dangerous, possessive “you don’t understand what you have with me” energy. He’s unable to let Darren go even after Darren chooses a different path, because Steve sees him as someone who belongs in his world, whether Darren agrees or not.
Anyone who gets between them becomes an obstacle, and Darren’s “safer” vampire life, as safe as being a vampire can really be, can never erase the bond Steve believes they share. So Steve keeps disrupting it, forcing his way back into Darren’s life again and again.
Without Steve, Darren probably would’ve had a relatively unremarkable, fairly uneventful existence as a vampire. Instead, one badass gray-haired obsessive fiend somehow turned Darren’s roughly 20 years as a vampire into 12 whole novels, while Crepsley’s first 100 years fit into two books. xD
Steve's relationship with Darren is not a normal friendship. Darren is the person who understands him, challenges him, and remains tied to his life in a way nobody else does. Darren represents excitement, danger, the supernatural world, the part of himself he can't escape. Steve would absolutely see himself as the person who brings out something Darren tries to suppress.
Steve's energy is all, "You think you can walk away and forget all about me? You think you can become a vampire and leave me behind?"
Which is darker and less romantic (because even tho I ship them so hard, I know they're not gay at all ^^;).
And Steve's hatred isn't just "I want Darren back." It's also jealousy, resentment, obsession, and wanting to prove that Darren's choices are wrong. He has a strong possessive "you can't escape me" undertone.
There's def an emotional ugliness of "I know you better than they do, and I will ruin anything that takes you away from me."

I am so tired of non-vegan animal 'lovers' and environmentalists refusing to do the right thing. We’re out of time for this willfully ignorant behavior 😔
Thanks to animal ag/omnivore diet, in 4 yrs we're headed for global crop failures, and by then only 10% of forests will remain. Livestock grazing alone is responsible for 38% to 40% of global deforestation, with cattle ranching accounting for 72% of deforested land in the Amazon rainforest.
The Climate Healers reported that animal ag/omnivore diet is responsible for at least 87% of greenhouse emissions. Lobbyists of meat & dairy coverup is why you never hear about this.
Time to ban meat and switch to plant-based.
Steve Leonard and Darren Shan's relationship is so central to both of them that neither really moves beyond it. Even when they're enemies, they're still the person occupying the other's thoughts. They absolutely see each other as irreplaceable, are each other's greatest attachment, but also are unfortunately each other's greatest source of conflict and pain.
