the thematic connection between peter and jean as protagonist and antagonist felt surface level at best. i can see what theyre going for and how they deliberately structured them to mirror each other but it felt like they were pushing a square peg into a rectangular hole. it fits? still off tho. which is why the emotional catharsis landed but still didnt punch as hard. the fact that they also have no prior relationship (or even metatextual relationship from other media for audiences to fall back on) to amplify peter's olive branch and sacrifice didnt help matters (aside from affirming what we already know: that peter is heroic and forgiving of people at their worst)

that being said this is also symptomatic of everything i hate (and by virtue of its inclusion in a larger franchise inescapable) about mcu spider-man. his entries are just a vehicle to a larger story (and disney corporate interests) and jean's inclusion is a very obvious gateway to introducing the mutants into the mcu rather than these characters servicing spider-man in a spider-man story.

love sadie sinks performance though. i cant speak for jean greys characterization here as the x-men arent my comics forte but ive always thought sadie could make gold out of shit. i love unlikeable female characters. i love that she did actual terrible things that could be considered irredeemable but still be sympathetic in the end

the more they feature mj the more upset i become at how theyve shafted her the past three movies. i see hints of who she is outside of peters mythos and i want to learn more. i'm so glad she stood her ground about how fucked it is the (usually) male superhero overrides the agency of the female li by deliberately withholding information and choosing for her

that being said due to the dearth of actual character development for mj i was never really invested in petermj in these movies ever since they spedrun their relationship in ffh but i am actually very excited now about the possibility of starting again from the ground up (at least on mjs part) if she ever develops feelings for peter again. genuinely tho i think itd be more interesting if she never did and her feelings stayed strictly platonic (it reminds me of how much i respect gog3's choice in asserting that alternate gamora is her own person lol maybe both peters can start a my girlfriend doesnt know me club)

the punisher felt like he escaped an 80s action movie and basically has two catchphrases "bullshit" and "kid" i enjoyed his banter with peter but his inclusion felt very sitcom tropey ie grumpy uncle w his younger plucky nephew and in both instances he tried to join the fight he just made things worse which i thought was so goofy for someone so competent and took me out of what should be a harrowing moment for him and peter
