It was Shakespeare who first said, “ONLINE DATING, UGH” and we couldn’t agree with him more. But what would the bard’s most famous characters write on their profiles, if forced to look for love on the godforsaken hellscape that is Tinder? SO GLAD YOU ASKED. 

I noticed some people have trouble with whitewashing in this fandom, so I’ve put together an in-depth, step-by-step tutorial to help you guys out <3

Here’s my lineart that I’m going to color, a simple Lance:

But now we run into a problem….Oh No! How do I decide what skin color to use? Well, that’s what I’m here to help you with, silly!

Step One:

Find an image of Lance with his canonical skin color. For this step I’m using this revolutionary tool of the modern age called Google, that lets you search for images in no time at all! You could also use images saved to your computer but Google is much faster.

Here’s a good Lance!

Step Two:

Open your Lance image in your drawing program.

Voila! A Lance for reference!

Step Three:

Now here’s the tricky part, where I think a lot of you mess up on. I’m assuming most of you don’t know about this tool, so pay attention! Look at your toolbar, and locate your Eyedropper tool.

In most programs, it should look like this:

I use Manga Studio 5, so here’s what mine looks like:

Once you find the Eyedropper tool, select it!

The Eyedropper tool lets you sample the color from any image so that you can use that color in your art! Amazing, right??

Step Four:

Now that your Eyedropper tool is selected, simply click on the color that you want to sample, i.e. click on Lance’s skin in the Lance image you Googled!

Your primary painting color should now be the color of Lance’s skin!

WOW!

Step Five:

Color your Lance! Now that you have the right color, you can finally color his skin properly without whitewashing him!

Look at that Lance!! What a beautiful brown boy.

As some final notes:

Some of you like to overlay colors and textures to give your art a finished look, but keep in mind the steps of this tutorial before you post your art! If you think you may have whitewashed Lance, simply use your Eyedropper tool to compare your Lance’s skin color to canon Lance’s skin color! If yours is lighter, adjust your base colors or the overlay to avoid whitewashing him.
