assuming a basic set of boundaries for people you meet is part of the social contract so it kinda blows my mind how often I see posts on here with zero nuance declaring that you can't possibly get upset if someone crosses a boundary you haven't explicitly set, as if the childhood bully yelling "I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!" was in the right

like you are actually supposed to try to be aware of how your actions could affect others

#I do agree that if someone asks if you're fine and you say you're fine then it sucks to be like 'you should have known I wasn't fine'#but also use context clues to some extent. even people who are good at defining their boundaries get upset #and upset people are irrational and do not always say what they mean. unfortunately #and there are cultures where it is literally part of the social contract to deny first #(I currently live in one!)
