Snowjanus

Coriolanus stands on the steps of Plinth's rented home, holding a bouquet of his grandmother's roses. As he taps his foot, waiting for the footman to answer the door, he glances down at the roses. Coriolanus doesn't know how he convinced the Grandma'am to allow him to collect the prized roses. He explained his reasons to the Grandma'am, persuading the woman that the roses were important and dropping the possible courtship. Didn't she want to contribute to his marriage?

His grandmother had been happy to provide the bouquet when she realized it was for a possible marriage. Of course, he told her nothing of the man he was pursuing. Coriolanus was certain she would disapprove if the senile woman found out he was perusing a foreigner, an American no less. The fortune Sejanus would provide was certain to soothe that particular burn once it was revealed to her.

At last, the footman opens the door.

"Is the master of the house available?" Coriolanus holds his card out to the man.

The footman, a balding man in his late 50s, glances at the card with boredom. There's a slight twitch at the corner of his lips as he reads the card before he looks back at Coriolanus.

"Yes, the Mistress is taking company in the parlor, Viscount." 

The footman leads him into the parlor where Mrs. Plinth sits with what he assumes must be her needlework.

"Viscount Snow, Madam," The footman informs the woman of his presence.

Mrs. Plinth looks up, a look of surprise on her face, "Oh, Viscount. What a wonderful surprise." She stands, straightening her skirt, "William, will you please inform Sejanus that the Viscount is here?"

The footman nods, exiting the room.

Coriolanus stands for a brief moment in silence. He hadn't formally called on someone before for this purpose, and unexpectedly, that made him nervous.

Regaining composure, he holds the bouquet for the woman, "These are for you."

"For me?" Mrs. Plinth's face lights up as she accepts the roses.

"They're from my grandmother's gardens," Coriolanus says with an air of importance. "She's quite fond of them." It was the polite way to describe the roses. In reality, hardly anyone in the Ton had gotten their hands on even a single rose from Grandma'am. He was certainly spoiling this woman with the bouquet.

"Oh, they are remarkable," Mrs. Plinth says, bringing the ivory roses to her nose and inhaling deeply. "Give my compliments to your grandmother."

He wouldn't, but he appreciates the praise for the one thing of his he was truly proud of.

"She will be happy to hear you like them," Coriolanus says with a charming smile.

It's at that moment that Sejanus decides to make his grand entrance into the parlor. He's dressed but in a manner that suggests he had hastily fixed his clothing when informed of the Viscount's arrival in his home. Nevertheless, he's handsome, with dark curls slightly amiss but still well-groomed. It was unfair that he was so clearly disheveled yet still captivating.

"Viscount," Sejanus breathes like he's run to get here.

Coriolanus stands, "Mr. Plinth."

"How are you?" Sejanus doesn't wait for the answer, turning his attention to his mother, "Did you order refreshments for the Viscount?"

Mrs. Plinth smiles warmly at her son, "Not yet, dear. The Viscount and I were just talking about how lovely the roses he brought were. Are they not the most stunning flowers you've ever seen?" Sejanus's mother shows her son the bouquet.

Sejanus looks from between the roses to Coriolanus and back to his mother, "Yes, they are quite beautiful, mother."

"It was no issue. My grandmother practically insisted I bring you a bouquet this morning," a lie, "Grandmother is very selective about who receives the honor." This time, the truth.

Mrs. Plinth blinks rapidly before her smile turns even sweeter, "Oh, I am quite honored then, Viscount. I can see why they are so precious to your grandmother."

Mrs. Plinth fills another beat of silence by saying, "Come, sit. I'll call for refreshments." The woman motions towards a maid, "Can you bring lemonade and cakes, Jane dear? Thank you."

The maid nods to her mistress before scurrying out of the room.

"So, Viscount Snow," Mrs. Plinth starts, "How was your travel here? It's quite cloudy out, it appears. Did you have any troubles?"

He, not wanting to appear as poor as he truly was, smiles amiably before responding, "I walked, madam. I'm quite fond of walking when I have the chance."

Of course, while Coriolanus did appreciate a nice walk, this was not the true reason he'd chosen to walk to most places when in town. Affording Grandma'am's maid and food for the table came before hiring coachmen and purchasing horses. He'd become quite accustomed to walking since the deaths of his parents nearly fifteen years ago due to necessity.

"Oh?" Mrs. Plinth's eyes dart to her son, "Sejanus is quite fond of walking as well. Perhaps the two of you could take a stroll in the park this afternoon. I'd be happy to escort you if you wish."

Coriolanus watches as the two have a silent conversation. There's irritation in Sejanus's eyes and sternness in his mother's.

"Really, that sounds lovely," Coriolanus tries to break the tension. Agreeing to a walk was good. People would notice that he'd started spending time outside parties with Sejanus. They'd start... wondering if there was a match to be made and hopefully put that idea in Sejanus's head.

"Excellent," Mrs. Plinth smiles at him. 

The maid Jane returns with a pitcher of lemonade and small intricately decorated cakes. Behind her, the footman carries the necessary plates and napkins. The help sets their refreshments up before bowing and leaving the room.

The cakes catch Coriolanus's eye immediately. They were so lavish. A real treat in his life was anything that looked as pretty as it tasted. He certainly could get used to a life where such attractive cakes were a constant. Perhaps he could find a cook with such skills for his home when he obtained his goal. He could vividly imagine serving these cakes to guests he and Sejanus would entertain in the Snow's newly refurbished parlor. 

"Are you sure, Viscount? We can stay inside if you'd prefer," Sejanus interrupts his fantasy.

"Oh, quite," he assures, "A nice stroll after refreshments would be excellent." He hardly needed to burn the calories off. The most he ate weekly was at the parties various members of the Ton hosted. He was terribly thin and had an inkling that he would be taller if not for the lack of proper nutrition for most of his life.

"Then it's settled," Mrs. Plinth says, looking at her son. We'll take a stroll after we're finished." 

She looks pleased with herself as she looks between the Viscount and her son.

There's a rest in the music as Sejanus leads Coriolanus to the dancefloor as the rest of the unmarried members of the Ton find their next dance partners.

"So," Sejanus is still holding his hand as they wait for the people to take their place in the dance, "Are all the events like this one?"

"In what way?"

Sejanus smiles, "So... stiff and..." he lowers his voice, "Crowded."

Coriolanus blinks at him, a bit surprised, "Whatever do you mean?"

The American shrugs, "It's just- how does one... form any sort of meaningful connection in such a crowded space?"

"Well, it would hardly be proper to," he twirls his hand to the implied, "in a more private setting."

"Would it? I just don't see how dances and chaperoned walks are effective in the search for a spouse," Sejanus says with a small smile, "Wouldn't it be better to learn if you are compatible with someone by engaging in more intimate discussion?"

Coriolanus couldn't agree less. Everything Sejanus said went against the carefully and strictly implemented rules that kept families like Coriolanus's significant. Who knew what would happen if they rocked the boat, even in small manners like this.

Despite the consistent insults to Coriolanus's world, he was set on seeing if this man could be his ticket to restoring the Snow's wealth. If it meant being pleasant and not arguing with the foreigner over the semantics of proper society, then so be it.

Anyways, it wasn't like Coriolanus would step out of line with Sejanus and shame himself. That was unthinkable, even in his desperate situation.

He makes sure his smile is still charming as he replies, "Oh?"

"I'd like to know you better," Sejanus gets to the point, "I don't see how we can... properly do that in the short moments we're allowed to be in each other's company."

The idea that Sejanus wants to know him better bodes well, but what he was asking of the Viscount was simply scandalous. Though it is perhaps easier to trap this man in a scandal, was it worth the gossip that would inevitably spread about this possible marriage if his attempts were to become fruitful? Definitely not. The Snows already were on the edge of being found out, so it was better not to draw more attention to himself.

Besides, who really needed to know their spouse before the union? Coriolanus knew plenty of people who married for fondness and financial security, and he thought they seemed content enough.

"What would you like to know that you cannot learn in the presence of a chaperone?" Coriolanus asks despite himself, too curious about what straightforward questions this man could have.

Sejanus smiles again, a sort of-- tenderness in his brown eyes, "I mean, I'd prefer a quieter setting where I could talk to you without the interruption of others- and the festivities."

The music begins before Coriolanus can make another polite declination. Instead, he's quieted by the way Sejanus's large hand lands on his waist, making his already delicate frame look positively tiny.

"Are you okay?" Sejanus asks as they begin the steps of the dance, "You look surprised. My mother tells me I am too forward. I'm sorry if I've offended you at all. I just--" they complete the first turn, "I've been-- quite taken with you from a distance and have hoped to meet you and speak with you."

"You've noticed me before tonight?" Coriolanus asks curiously, wondering where this supposed first glance had taken place. They pull away from each other briefly, trading partners for a few steps before returning to each other. To Coriolanus's great pleasure, Sejanus has a slight blush gracing his cheeks.

"Out on my daily ride. I've seen you... walking with a blonde woman in the square."

"Tigris," Coriolanus's voice comes out as a soft whisper as Sejanus pulls him slightly closer, their noses nearly brushing. 

Really, this dance was much too seductive, Coriolanus thought.

"Pardon?" The words are practically spoken into his ear before Coriolanus moves into the next steps of the dance, moving to face his partner once again. His hand lands on the man's shoulder. He's quite broad, Coriolanus notes as he glances at his gloved hand on the expanse of Sejanus's shoulder. Normally, it would bother Coriolanus that his partner was much taller, but with Sejanus-- he almost appreciated it. 

"The... blonde Lady is my cousin, Tigris. She likes to take strolls in the afternoon and often asks me to accompany her," He explains. He realizes his mistake quickly, tacking on, "When I am, of course, not busy with my duties as Viscount."

"Naturally," Sejanus agrees, not pressing him, "She's very beautiful, your cousin. Is she unwed? Or perhaps betrothed?"

"Unwed, yes. Betrothed, no." He doesn't mention that to fix that for his cousin; he must make a match with someone like the man he's dancing with. It wasn't important for Sejanus to know his motivations for their introduction. Nor would it be helpful for him to succeed.

Sejanus pauses momentarily, "Is she your elder?"

"She is," Coriolanus responds; they continue to dance. He would not admit it, but Sejanus was quite the dancer, easily falling into leading without room for argument. He realizes how little he minds now; usually, he would lead in any dance with any other partner, but it felt... oddly fine letting Sejanus have the lead... for now.

The dance ends, but Sejanus doesn't loosen his grip on Coriolanus's waist and hand, their eyes lingering longer than necessary.

"What can I do to continue our time together?" Sejanus's voice comes out hushed.

Coriolanus is at a loss for words, drowning in the deep brown of his partner's eyes. "I could call on you... tomorrow."

"You do not wish for me to call on you?" Sejanus asks, bewildered.

Their London mansion was a mess; the parlor was in deep disrepair, not at all fit for a gentleman caller. He'd need to keep up appearances if he were to pull this off. Of course, if they did choose to marry, they'd naturally live in his ancestral properties, and Sejanus would find out about the sticky situation his new husband had been hiding.

He hoped, if this plan did come to fruition, Sejanus would be understanding and... generous.

"No, I shall call on you," Coriolanus replies, removing his hand from the American's grip, "Goodnight, Mr. Plinth."

General AU Notes:

1. There's no homophobia in this Regency Era AU. Marrying someone of the same gender isn't uncommon or discouraged. It's normal for these people. 2. Coriolanus is bisexual. I think it's important to point out because it's often hinted at. But, again, it's not uncommon or odd for a man to marry a man or a woman to marry a woman in this AU. BUT, it's also important to note that Coriolanus would marry ANYONE if it meant he'd gain a fortune. 3. Coriolanus is British, Sejanus is American. This is Regency England. There is no Panem in this AU. 4. The one big thing I kept from Canon is that the Snow's are poor but act wealthy (in this AU it's because they hold a title in society).

Before he makes his introduction, Coriolanus bumps into the hostess of the night's festivities, Lady Satyria Click.

"Lady Click," he nods to the older woman, "You look lovely tonight."

Satyria, one of the late Vicountess's lifelong friends, had always adored Coriolanus, even treating him as her own when the opportunity arose. He was quite certain she'd be happy to conduct an introduction between the newcomers, Clemensia, and him. If they were here, it meant they had at least been introduced to Satyria and made a... decent impression on the woman.

The Lady smiles, undoubtedly dazzled by the Viscount's compliment, "Oh, Coriolanus, you spoil me with your words." She extends her hand to him.

"I am merely speaking the truth, my Lady," he takes her gloved hand, kissing her knuckles briefly.

"Lady Heavensbee," Satyria says after a beat, nodding toward Coriolanus's companion, "You look quite well."

Clemensia smiles, "Thank you, Lady Click. As do you."

With the mandatory pleasantries out of the way, Coriolanus jumps into what he really wants from the Lady: "Lady Click, I was wondering if you had a spare moment for an introduction to your foreign guests." His eyes dart to the dark-haired man and his parents. He is happy to see the man still stealing glances in his direction.

"Oh!" Satyria looks towards the three, "Of course, Coriolanus. Let me lead the way."

The older Lady walks them toward the young man and his parents. Coriolanus notices how the mother seems to touch her son's back, instructing him without words to stand up straighter. 

"Mr. and Mrs. Plinth," Satyria says, stopping before them, "How are you this evening?"

The older two smile affably at their host. The younger Plinth lets his eyes fall on Coriolanus once again, now close enough to truly look.

The older man speaks first, "We are wonderful." His eyes dart to Coriolanus and then briefly to his son.

"Excellent; I hope you are enjoying yourself so far," Satyria smiles, playing the hostess flawlessly.

"We are quite comfortable, Lady Click," the woman smiles, nodding, "Your home is very lovely."

"Thank you, Mrs. Plinth," Satyria beams, "My late husband had quite exquisite taste. He designed this entire home himself."

"Oh?" Mrs. Plinth looks genuinely interested, much to Coriolanus's surprise. 

"Yes, he was quite the visionary... We can continue to speak about it after I've made my introductions," Satyria smiles, gesturing towards Coriolanus, "This is my dear friend, Viscount Coriolanus Snow," she gestures less magnificently toward Clemensia, "And this is Lady Clemensia Heavensbee."

"Strabo Plinth," the elder man nods, then motions towards his companions, "My wife and my son."

The woman smiles warmly, her eyes crinkling softly as she looks at Coriolanus, "It is a pleasure to meet all of you."

"The pleasure is all mine," Coriolanus says, taking Mrs. Plinth's hand and pressing a gentlemanly kiss against her gloved knuckles, "That is an extraordinary dress, madame. You truly have an eye for fashion."

He wondered which modiste pointed this woman in the direction of this fabric. The poor woman was certainly swindled.

Indeed, it was nothing less than stunning in its design and flow—but it hardly could be the woman's personal taste, he was certain.

Mrs. Plinth flushes lightly, "Thank you, Viscount."

The younger man doesn't hesitate to hold his hand toward Coriolanus when his mother finishes speaking.

Coriolanus glances at the hand held out, slightly appalled by the gesture. Was there no etiquette in the Americas? Nonetheless, he accepts the handshake even if it repulses him to stoop to such a common greeting.

"Sejanus," the man informs. It's another offense—much too informal for a man he's just meeting. Yet Coriolanus forgives the blunder, nodding in return.

"Viscount Snow," he replies. Just because Sejanus was improper hardly meant he had to be.

The small smile that jumps at the corner of Sejanus's lips irritates Coriolanus only slightly, as if Coriolanus's formal introduction amuses him.

"It's a pleasure meeting you, Viscount Snow," Sejanus plays along as if this is some sort of joke and not his actual proper title.

Still, he really needs to make this introduction matter, "The pleasure is all mine." The words drip off his lips with ease as he gives the American a charming smile. He's happy to note the smile causes a momentary pause in Sejanus's own, the barest of flushes staining his cheeks. 

Coriolanus notes that Clemensia and Satyria seem content speaking with Mrs. Plinth, so he feels no guilt in continuing this... private conversation with Sejanus.

"So," Sejanus clears his throat, his eyes darting to the dancers on the floor, "Is there something one must do to get a dance at one of these parties?"

"Whatever do you mean?" Coriolanus frowns slightly, confused by the question. Was he asking him to dance, or was he asking how to ask?

"Am I too forward by asking you for a dance so soon after an introduction, or is it quite acceptable?" Sejanus says, brown meeting blue a bit more confidently this time.

Coriolanus's stomach twists, not from disgust but interest in this blunt newcomer who wasted no time. He wonders briefly if he's being made fun of.

"You wish to dance with me?" Coriolanus asks, needing clarification. He refuses to be made a fool by this man, and the best way to avoid that is to force the man to be painfully transparent with him.

"You're not with someone, right? The Lady... Heavensbee is Hilarius's wife, correct?" Sejanus asks, making sure he's not made a mistake asking an accompanied man to dance.

"She is," Coriolanus nods, "You know Hilarius?"

"Briefly. No more than an-- introduction for business," Sejanus responds frankly, "But, does that mean you are here... alone?"

There's a hint in those words, an inquiry into his status at the party and, more importantly, his marital status.

"I am," Coriolanus responds, "I suppose I can... fit you in for a dance."

Sejanus tilts his head, that irritatingly amused smile on his face again, "Oh, is there a queue already in place?"

The Viscount bites his tongue briefly, "Are you teasing me?"

His eyes crinkle, and his smile only broadens: "I wouldn't dream of teasing you, Viscount."

After a beat of silence, Coriolanus unable to think of a response, the brunet holds out his gloved hand with a warm smile, "So, may I have this dance?"

"You may," Coriolanus finally agrees, placing his hand in Sejanus's outstretched one.

Sejanus grins, allowing the sight of his dimpled cheeks to show to the Viscount. The authenticity of the smile, so warm and unpretentious, brings a flush to Coriolanus's cheeks. He's furious that this practical stranger has forced such a reaction from him. There's never been a time in his life when he's been reduced to-- such ridiculous responses, such as blushing.

He wasn't sure he liked it one bit.

General AU Notes:

Somehow, he ends up in the middle of the enthusiastic mothers of the 

Ton. His first step into the soiree had been something of a call to these audacious women. They'd swarmed him, reintroducing their adult children to the Viscount as if he hadn't known the majority since childhood. His smile was as polite as possible, but inside irritation quickly rose as the women around him tried much too hard to sway him into agreeing to dance with their offspring.

As their high, grating voices prick at his ears, the thought that these women didn't exactly know he was only good for a title, not a fortune, passes through his mind. What if one of the more gossip-inclined mamas found out this... tidbit of information, and it spread across the Ton? There was no better reason to act charmingly and politely until he secured a marriage prospect. 

This anxiety had started somewhere near the beginning of the season when he'd brought up finding himself a marriage partner at the dinner table. He and Tigris had discussed all the possible ways his... search for a wealthy spouse could go wrong, preparing themselves for any issues that could arise. His cousin had supposed that the prospect's family could overlook the knowledge of their... bad luck as long as the potential match had a hefty fortune of their own.

Besides, Tigris had supposed, these mamas were social climbers. They wanted to boast that their child was married to a Viscount. Even if the Snows were quite impoverished, the Snow family's title was prestigious on its own. It was worth much more than any fortune, he concluded with himself.

Besides, Coriolanus knew he should not judge them for title-hunting when he was unfortunately equally as pathetic by fortune-hunting within the marriage mart.

Despite this acknowledgment, the introductions between him, the mamas, and their children were exhausting. He longed to be over with this, to be done with the tiresome events and marry the first person to offer. It would certainly be easier to be on the married sidelines of these parties, to no longer be asked to dance by strangers and friends.. or hounded by overly interested mothers. To be someone's husband instead of someone's potential suitor.

Despite feeling this way, he tries extremely hard to pay attention as Lady Creed speaks to him about her son Festus, a man he's known since childhood.

"And Festus has acquired a quite excellent stallion recently. The horse is a prize even compared to my son's current horses. Did I tell you, Festus breeds horses?"

"No, you did not, but I believe Festus has spoken about it on occasion," Coriolanus says, trying to sound interested. He detested horses and hardly had any interest in Festus. His pockets may be full, but he was not on Coriolanus's list of potential spouses.

He spots his friend, Clemensia, walk in right at that moment, saving him from any more talk of horse breeding with Lady Creed.

"You must excuse me, Lady Creed," Coriolanus says with a mannerly smile, his hand politely landing on the older woman's hand. "I will certainly speak with your son later, but I see a friend has just arrived."

He escapes the conversation before the ambitious woman can stop him with more equine discussion, greeting his friend with his first genuine smile of the night, "Clemensia."

Clemensia smiles back, "That's Lady Heavensbee to you, Viscount."

Clemensia had secured her own husband this season—rather quickly. Coriolanus was sure it wasn't because of his friend's sparkling personality, but he was happy for her nonetheless. But if publicly shaming yourself was in line to obtain a spouse, he wasn't sure he was up for it.

"Ah, of course. My apologies, Lady Heavensbee," he replies in a teasing tone.

Clemensia beams, "How have you been tonight, Viscount? Tormented by the mamas already?"

He fights the urge to roll his eyes, "Yes. I've become quite accustomed to it, alas."

"Oh, I can tell," Clemensia gives him a look of understanding, "They are quite persistent. By the way, has anyone caught your interest lately?"

A short, sarcastic laugh leaves his lips, "Would I be talking to a married woman if I had?"

"Fair enough," Clemensia smiles, "It is quite nice to no longer be paraded around. I sympathize with your lot. My own mother was quite... dedicated to finding a husband for me."

"Ah, but you did not need her help, did you?" It's only a tiny bit of an insult, but Clemensia won't mind. It's how they'd always operated, on the thin line between friend and foe.

His friend's smile turns into a slight smirk as she replies, "Oh, hush. I caught my husband in a perfectly... acceptable manner."

"Caught indeed," Coriolanus says, taking two glasses of champagne from a tray a servant offers him and handing one to Clemensia. 

She takes it graciously before returning the subject to him, " Is there really no one who you're interested in?"

Coriolanus takes a long sip of his champagne, thinking of an appropriate answer, landing on, "No one who ticks off all the boxes."

"Maybe you are too picky," Clemensia points out, hiding a smile behind her champagne flute.

Coriolanus doesn't fight the roll of his eyes this time, "I think I'm well within my right to be picky."

Clemensia laughs, the sound a bit irritating. Before she can respond with her own quip, the party's attention seems to shift toward the entrance, where an unfamiliar man, flanked by an older man and woman, stands.

He's tall, with broad shoulders and dark hair. His two older companions are similar in appearance, likely indicating close familial relations. The trio is dressed in perfectly fashionable, new clothing, all looking exceptional—possibly better than most of the regular participants of the current circle.

People continue to stare, including Coriolanus and his companion, as the family moves into the party.

"Who is he?" Coriolanus finds himself asking Clemensia, quite to his surprise.

Clemensia looks at her friend with interest, "What makes you think I know?"

Coriolanus looks at her, "Because you're a terrible gossip, Clemmie."

Clemensia glares momentarily before saying, "Livia told me he's a wealthy businessman, an American. His father, the older gentleman, is interested in an investment in England." 

"How wealthy?" Coriolanus whispers back.

Clemensia's eyes dart to him, "Why do you care?"

"I'm simply interested in the possible new addition to society," he says, twirling the liquid in his glass in a manner that feigns disinterested.

"Livia was told... they are quite wealthy," Clemensia finally responds, "It is just a rumor, but she said someone mentioned their wealth... exceeding even the Ravinstills."

Coriolanus ponders over this new information, this new... potential suitor, and the bountiful funds he possesses. On the one hand, he was handsome and supposedly wealthy if Livia and the state of his splendid clothing were to be trusted. On the other hand, he was foreign to Coriolanus's world. What if he was ghastly and couldn't hold a proper conversation? Or had practically any other bad habit that could not be corrected at his age?

It was risky-- but the prospect of this wealth-- rivaling one of the wealthier families in the Ton, intrigued him greatly. Accounts like that could restore his family's name ten times over, pushing the Snows to the top once again. If these Americans were truly serious about making a place in this circle, they could use someone like him, a connection to title and prestige. Certainly, they wouldn't fit in as is, even if they dressed and acted like those in Society. 

Really, they needed him.

"What are you thinking?" Clemensia asks, raising an eyebrow in interest.

"Simply that, it would be polite to greet the newcomers, wouldn't it? We are quite influential... they require friends, no?"

Coriolanus spots the younger man looking in his direction, his dark eyes trained on the duo as they move gracefully toward him and his parents. 

He can't help but feel a thrill run up his spine. Perhaps this would be easier than he anticipated. 

Perhaps the Snows would be quite comfortable by the end of the season after all.

Tigris adjusts and then readjusts his white cravat, careful that the knot looks as perfect as if a valet had done it up. As much as he appreciates his cousin's help dressing, thinking of the implications grates on his nerves. They were Snows; he was a Viscount, for Christ's sake! They should have maids, valets, and a cook—people to do these things for them!

Instead of boundless wealth, his birthright as the ninth Viscount Snow, Coriolanus Snow inherited gambling debts and a title that meant little without the funds to keep up the family estate, the London home, and the lavish lifestyle his Grandmother still clung to.

Tigris straightens the collar of his tailcoat, smiling up at him, "You look handsome." It was the finest of his few well-fitting tailcoats. A stunning blue color that brought out the intensity of his eyes. Tigris had fashioned it satisfactorily, giving away nothing of their... financial struggles, as she had kept much of the lavish embellishments and expertly sewn stitching.

Another fact that grated on Coriolanus's nerves: his cousin, Lady Tigris Snow, had been forced to learn to fashion clothing for the family instead of paying visits to the modiste herself. Tigris had assured him plenty that she adored sewing, to create dresses for herself and the Grandma'am, waistcoats, tailcoats, and more for him... but really! A Lady- a Snow, more importantly- shouldn't be doing such... common work, in Coriolanus's mind.

"Only because of your-- talents," it made his stomach turn to compliment the styling she'd done to one of his father's old coats, even if she was saving them once again from embarrassment.

Tigris's laugh is soft and breathy, "Oh, baby cousin. It's you who makes the coat beautiful, not the other way around."

Coriolanus flushes slightly. He knew he was considered-- attractive to many of the Ton and commonfolk, but it still made him blush pink whenever someone used the word beautiful to describe his looks.

Tigris smiles at him, "Sorry, sorry. Handsome. Your handsomeness." 

She knows him so well.

Coriolanus clears his throat and changing the subject, "Are you coming tonight?"

Tigris shakes her head, not meeting his eye. "I—I'm afraid I don't feel my best tonight."

"Headache?" Coriolanus asks, noting the lie for what it was. He knew his cousin was avoiding the events this London season because of a certain gentleman—one who most indubitably felt exactly the same about his beautiful cousin as she did him. Tigris, though, was under the impression that this gentleman would turn her away if he found out about Snow's fortune or lack thereof, and had been avoiding a public meeting to keep her feelings at bay. Too many times Coriolanus had caught his cousin shedding silent tears when she thought herself alone in the kitchen. He couldn't bear to see her tears.

"Besides," he's sure it must be a Snow trait to change the subject once one was uneasy, "Your attendance is far more important than mine."

Coriolanus purses his lips at that comment. Ah, yes, the true reason he must attend these blasted soirees. 

Marriage.

The Viscount turns away from his cousin, pacing across the room in a manner that gives away his anxiety about the subject. This choice wasn't just for a content life; it was hardly about that. It was for money, a fortune. An alliance that would restore his family name and keep the Grandma'am and his cousin comfortable. Maybe somewhere in the middle, he could secure a particular marriage proposal for his dear cousin.

"Don't worry, Coryo," his cousin's voice is full of affection and understanding, "You are so handsome and splendid. Certainly, many of the ladies and gentlemen are already pining after you. You practically have the pick of the Ton."

"But, it's not about picking-" Coriolanus says in a frustrated tone, "It's about restoring our home, our wealth--"

Tigris stops him before he can begin his typical rant, "And those things are important to you, I am well aware, but you shouldn't marry only for wealth, Coryo. Focus on finding a life partner that can make you... happy as well." Tigris smiles at him as if it's that easy.

Coriolanus holds his tongue, wondering how on Earth his cousin had become so romantic in their shared environment. They ate what little they could afford, struggled to keep their fires lit, and wore clothing she fashioned from old garments left by their deceased respective parents—worn out, out-of-fashion, struggling, and poor! In Coriolanus's opinion, there was nothing to be romantic about in life—certainly not a prospective marriage.

He eventually nods, refusing to be the one to tamper out that flame of romanticism in her, even if it was foolish, in his humble opinion.

"Oh, Coryo," Tigris chuckles, "I know you don't believe in such things, but you never know. Perhaps you'll meet someone who catches your fancy tonight, and you'll understand..." She drifts off, certainly thinking of her gentleman friend.

He can feel her sadness as much as he can see it in her eyes.

"Perhaps," he humors her, "So, I ought to look my best," he says with a close-lipped smile. 

Tigris smiles back, but it doesn't reach her eyes, "And you will." His cousin returns to fussing with his shirt collar once again, "I'll make sure you look extraordinary in case-- a dashing gentleman or stunning lady catches your eye."

Coriolanus smiles at her, genuine this time, "You always do."

"I always do," Tigris nods, a matching smile on her lips.
