I thought the new Age of Umbra Sallowlands graphic looked very "demake video game" or crusty pixel retro rpg, and and then the character art looked like something you'd find in an eyepatchwolf fake video games essay next to plastiboo's stuff, and lo, the artist does have gorgeous work published with Hollowpoint Press as exactly that
Obsessed with how some people get so attached to their own headcanons that they get mad when they see a character presented as they are in canon

Listening to something good and thinking about how the violence and brutality of Kingsley's piracy never ever gets touched on. Which is a shame because I know the impulse thus far has been to go oh well he's sort of a free spirit you know, and like, well, yes, I realize Taliesin was probably going for an errol flynn thing, but like, let's be real, he's not the king in that he governs, he just carves out safety for his friends and then holds court while on Darktow, but his career is now in raping and pillaging. Personally I find this interesting, but I also find characters doing horrible shit in stories interesting.
It just never comes up.
Me like what if I wrote Mollymauk, Lucien, and Kingsley as a trio of witches and I liked the idea so much I developed it for original work.
But also... what if I made a little lesser version... for fic...

Vox Machina season 4 is categorically the poorest quality thing produced by critical role so far.
This is a show for fifteen year olds

I can also offer a Molly cause I love the purple man and he’s alive in my brain
If you go adventuring into an ancient tomb and DONT come back out pregnant did you really go adventuring at all?
Meds need refilling, and I will art for money. Something like this, colorful and character-based, for a hundred.
Meds are refilled, but I can always use gas money, and I’m enjoying pushing the pixels around until they look like a thing. Pass it on!

Putting all my sad feelings about war and children and fear onto mollymauk tealeaf. Definitely will not wrestle with how to write him in an honest way for like a year
The trouble, listen to me, the trouble is that a phenomenal final punctuation at the end of campaign 2 of critical role's main show would have been "I Suppose We Could Go Anywhere", a song that would not exist for another six years.
[pretend this post is being made months ago] i’m honestly not sure if i like the idea of having molly stumble upon some sinister runes regarding his backstory. i understand why they did it in the show—the whole point of a switch in format like this is the new opportunities you get for things like proper foreshadowing, set up and pay off you can control. but i think the charm and horror of molly was that he genuinely didn’t know, didn’t want to know, and never found out. giving him even a small sense of truth lessens the feeling that he’s someone completely disconnected, by his own volition, from the reality he lives in. the way the characters describe him even an episode after his death sounds more like they’re telling a folk tale or praying to a patron saint - it’s hard to conceive of him as real when he isn’t standing in front of you. he’s a ticking time bomb, his very existence is unstable. it becomes obvious immediately that he could never have survived the narrative, that he was destined to collapse in on himself, because he represents the willful ignorance the rest of the group can no longer allow themselves to have, and the sheer life they’re fighting to save. but all those themes are there because of his death, not the other way around.
in the campaign, the reason molly’s death hits so hard is that it wasn’t supposed to happen. this is a trait very unique to liveplays, where no one can be sure of how something is going to go until it’s over. the lead up to 26 wasn’t particularly sinister, other than for half the group being missing, but the players and audience understood that necessity on a doyalist level. there was no impending sense of doom because the fight wasn’t meant to be deadly, or maybe it wasn’t supposed to happen at all. and i think that’s what makes it so impactful- you’re put in the mind of the characters and experience for yourself how shocking and off-beat a death like that is. and then you spend another hundred episodes coming to terms with it, not only because you miss the character, but because you understand that there was a version of the story where molly was with them during all of these arcs. molly could’ve been a pirate. he could’ve gotten a new xhorhas outfit. he could’ve met essek. and it’s that frustration at sheer bad luck that gets you. but when you introduce foreshadowing into the mix, as you have to do with a tv show, it takes away that aspect of the character that i’ve always found wholly unique to this specific campaign, because you understand that molly’s death is imperative for the narrative. but in the campaign, it wasn’t imperative right up until it happened, and then it became the most important, all-encompassing event of the story. his death genuinely alters the narrative- it changes the direction of character arcs, it gives it a new villain, it gives it overarching themes that weren’t there before, it gives them caduceus, who shifts the tone of it all by himself. there’s a version of the story where molly doesn’t die, but that version is completely unrecognizable from the one we know. and you can’t say that about the show, because he’s going to die from the very beginning, and so when it happens it’ll only cement everything that’s already been set up. it works, sure, in terms of general story beats, but i don’t think it works well, or at least, as well as it does in the campaign.
can i be honest with you guys. i don’t think this is a story that is at all improved by transposing it into tv format. but what do i know! i’ve seen like three episodes max!
No, you're right - tv adaptation mollymauk is much weaker than the weird and incredibly fortuitous succession of choices that happened in the campaign.
The trouble is that critical role has only developed very straightforward fantasies for its adaptations (bummer, especially as they exist in the world and compete with the likes of arcane [unbelievably well-funded passion project, world's most expensive and likely successful commercial] and now a knight of the seven kingdoms [unbelievably charming and earnestly emotional yet brutal, with an unusual perspective for televised fantasy with anachronistic creative touches]).
And the trouble with straightforward fantasies (swearing and referential joking aside), especially when the scaffolding for the narrative is a game where the point is to grow and develop, is that you cant have a renard the fox + chanticleer hybrid running around with the protagonists who have to do the growing and developing.
Mollymauk was self-actualized at the point we meet him (his being full of shit and an amnesiac unimportant to this, he's a poor, poor-man's robin hood in his origin comic, which is a buff and shine to the character but reads very much like the character he was Intended to be played as during the campaign). You can still be a fairy godmother figure even if you have amnesia amd dont care - the character his name is borrowed from very much is. But you really cant have that kind of guy running around with your protagonists - in a more typical structure, like the tv show, of course they have to lose that mentor/guidance figure (whether they saw him as that or not when he was around), otherwise his lessons are never going to sink in, and they dont heed the call.
But! It does mean that because they cant get lucky as they did in real time, and cant do anything atypical (who knows why) narratively, all they can do is drive down the block slowly while screaming through a mic "this guy is gonna kill himself in front of like four of these guys and change the trajectory of their lives forever, lmao, can you believe it, these fucks ups?"
Im looking forward to getting dedicated OCD therapy, because while grief borrowing can be a problem for anyone, I don't want to borrow grief so completely that I miss enjoying my life with my partner, who lights up my world.
Often i forget people dont know what i know, and so i'll read something and be like why are you impressed by this, obviously they got that from - and then have to gentle my spirit by reminding myself of course they dont know.
