It would be so simple for their relationship to be that simple, for Wei Wuxian to just be the shield that stands between the Wens and the rest of the world. But it isn’t. They light and place the lanterns outside so they can guide him home to them. They live together as a family and they invite Wei Wuxian in. In many ways, the Wens were the greatest family Wei Wuxian’s ever had. Namely, they’re all equals and they’re in this together. No one cares that Wei Wuxian is the son of a servant, no one cares about the rumours that he was Jiang Fengmian’s bastard son, no one cares that he doesn’t wield a sword or fight righteously. They’ve all lost their homes and any status that they’d held and now they’re just people gathered around a fire sharing food they’ve grown together. They don’t care about his reputation, be it as a flighty and disrespectful cultivator or as the arrogant demonic cultivator who went against everything righteous and acceptable. All they care about is the fact that, even though he doesn’t know how to farm, he gets down on his knees and digs through the dirt with them, that he discusses alcohol with the uncles and asks the aunts how to farm and wash clothes and cook. And let’s not forget that the Wens’ entire future is held within A-Yuan, he is their hope and their legacy and all they have left, and they give him to Wei Wuxian. A-Yuan reaches out for him and they let him take him. They let Wei Wuxian hold him and feed him and play with him and they trust him with everything that A-Yuan represents and is. They trust the man who helped take everything away from them with the one thing they have left. And Wei Wuxian trusts them in turn, he needs them and he loves them and he’s free in a way he’d otherwise never be able to be. And then he loses them.
