1914

March 20th Twenty of the first and second round of students recruited in July of 1913 who showed enthusiasm in training and had good results perform as part of the entertainment at a wedding exposition 「婚礼博覧会」  starting from April 1st as their first performance. They practice for 12 days starting from this date.

April 1st The first performance starts (runs until May 30th). Takamine Taeko stars as Momotaro in “Don Burako”

第一 回記念公演開始 (5月30日まで)。 「ドンブラコ」 の (桃太郎) 髙峰妙子。

August 1st Start of the Summer Performance (runs until August 30th)

October 1st 1st Autumn performance starts (runs until November 30th). Ogura Miyuki and Kumoi Namiko star as the “Bartender” in “Music Cafe”

10月1日 秋季公演開始 (11月30日まで)。 「音楽カフエー 」の(バーテンダー) 小倉みゆき、 雲井浪子。

November 1st Miyoshi Kazuoki , a famous composer known for 「汽笛一声新橋を」 joins the revue. 11月1 「汽笛一声新橋を」 の作曲者として有名な三善和気入団。

December 11th The Osaka Mainichi Shumbun organizes a large variety of charity operas at the Osaka Kitahama Imperial Theater. “Don Burako” and “Urashima Taro”, among others, are performed.

12月11 大阪北浜の帝国座で3日間、 大阪毎日新聞社主催の大毎慈善歌劇会が開催され、 「ドンブラコ」、「 浦島太郎」 などを上演。

December 15th They appear in a charity opera organized by the Osaka Umeda newspaper’s Kobe branch.

1. Open Culture:  Not a large a selection, but high quality texts. If you just want to skim a book to brush up on a course you took in ninth grade, download one of these. I have yet to be disappointed.

2. Book Boon: Provides free college-level textbooks in a PDF format. Probably the widest range of subjects on the web. The site is also pretty.

3. Flat World Knowledge: The worlds largest publisher of free and open college textbooks. Humanitie texts are particularly difficult to come by, this site has a great selection in all disciplines.

4. Textbook Revolution:  Some of the books are PDF files, others are viewable online as e-books, or some are simply web sites containing course or multimedia content.

It is so well known that women are better and safer drivers than men that OUR CAR INSURANCE RATES ARE LOWER. Women get into fewer accidents, get fewer DUIs, and receive fewer speeding tickets than men.

“women are too emotional”

Men love to say this about women after hurting them, in order to shift the blame and dismiss their feelings in one go. In reality, women are taught to hold our tongues and control ourselves quite literally from birth. We’re taught to put men’s needs and wants ahead of our own emotions regardless of the personal cost. Men are taught to do more or less whatever the fuck they want to women. Men take their emotions out on women while women are expected to shove theirs down.

Alright people who are up on old Takarazuka shows. I need your help.

Maybe I’m just blind but I cannot for the life of me figure out what year this pamphlet is from. It’s for a Hanagumi show that was put on at the Nagoya Takarazuka theater (which I think did Takarazuka shows starting in 1935 until 1953). It appears the show ran from December 6th to the 19th.

The closes I’ve been able to come is 1940 or 1945. Wikipedia lists Hanagumi having performed 『日本民謡集』 in Nagoya in 1940 but it’s listed as having been there in November, not December. It also lists 『広虫姫』 and 『子供の四季』, which I’m not seeing listed in this program. Of course that might be totally off track because the program lists the show as 『日本民踊集』 and not 『日本民謡集』 soooo *shrugs* (though they’re both pronounced that same way so I am inclined to believe it is the same show).

It also can’t be from 1940 because the program is listing 八汐路蕙子 who didn’t debut until 1942. I also think its also listing 梓真弓, though the kanji is a bit off in the program. If it is her (and I’m about 98% sure it is) than that pushes the show date back to 1943 since she’s the youngest person listed. Starring in the show was Harue Fukami who was active until 1946. This means the show had to have been sometime between 1943 - 1945 (Since the show was done in December and I doubt Fukami retired with it, it’s very unlikely it was 1946). 

Unfortunately I don’t think there were any class debuts between 1944 and 1945 so I can’t narrow it down any further by using 梓真弓 as the youngest person listed.

Hanagumi is not listed has having been in Nagoya in December of 1945 but it did perform 『日本民謡集』 in November of that year. Hanagumi also performed 『太刀盗人』 (listed on page 6) in September of that year and Tsukigumi performed 『棒しばり』  (also listed on page 6) earlier in 1945 as well. So 1945 would have left Hanagumi prepared for 2 of the 3 shows with Takarazuka having sets and costumes already made up for the 3rd one. Working against it, however, is the fact that Takarazuka did do a show in Nagoya on December 20th. Would they really have done two shows a mere 4 days apart? (Though with both of the grand theaters being closed in Takarazuka and Tokyo due to the war and the temporary theater they built burning down on December 8th, maybe they didn’t have much other choice.)

Anyway,  I am still inclined to think that this was from 1945 but I’m hoping there’s someone else out there who might have more concrete information.

Women have been a leading force in sanitation strikes, calling for equal treatment and job security. This particular service industry has been the focus of multiple feminist manifestos and employment goals. Women fought long and hard to gain the right to work in sanitation, and they’re continuing that effort to open up the field more. This issue is so big that Parks and Rec even made an episode about it. 

Female sewer workers have repeatedly sued the DEP for unfair treatment, seeking to open up the industry and gain equal status with their male peers. Sewer work is often targeted for its biased hiring practices. Hundreds of female candidates fight for limited available positions, but most are turned away, despite having the necessary experience and skills. Feminist workers recognize that these women are willing and able to do the work, but aren’t getting the opportunity to gain employment here. 

Historically, coal mining is one of the most highly targeted careers for gender bias. Women have been petitioning for the opportunity to mine safely since the Industrial Revolution. This is actually one of the primary and best studied examples of women fighting to enter traditionally male fields. Lots of women, who both succeeded in the mines and didn’t, continue to petition for increased access to this field. 

And yeah, women want white collar jobs too. Go figure - A diverse population of women, with different abilities, interests and levels of education, are all fighting for the right to seek diverse forms of employment. Fighting for equality in one sphere doesn’t mean that we’ve forgotten about the others.
