Although this day is understood to commemorate a specific event, the myth of the first thanksgiving, colonization does not start or end here. If you attend a land grant university, you should also consider the violent and exploitative history that paved the way for their existence. It’s not uncommon for new construction to disturb and pave over resting Ancestors. Again, colonization is a process, not a single event, and we are still resisting every day.

I will link the Native Land website as it is useful as an educational starting point for non-natives. However, the site isn’t always accurate, so please don’t rely on it solely. Understand that a simple once-a-year land acknowledgment with no active support and participation in material change often comes off more insulting than you may realize. Knowing and acknowledging is a first step, but every tribe has individual challenges they must face, and it’s up to you to find out what you can do specifically to support the people whose land you’re living on. Be humble, build relationships, always be open to learning.
